Roger Guillemin(1924-2024)
He was a pioneer in neuroendocrinology, and shared the 1977 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine with Rosalyn Sussman Yalow and Andrew Schally.
He graduated from the University of Dijon and started medical school at the University of Lyon. He interrupted his studies to join the French underground's efforts to help refugees get to Switzerland during WWII. He received a medical degree in 1949, and earned a PhD at the University of Montreal.
He joined the faculty at the Baylor University College of Medicine in Houston, Texas where he taught physiology and searched for neurohormones. In 1970, he moved to the Salk Institute in San Diego, California where he spent the rest of his career.
