Believe it or not, Ben Affleck hasn’t been involved in any direct sequels throughout his career. While he has reprised roles in various films, none of them can be considered direct sequels to his previous work. However, for the first time in his 41-year career, the actor will be starring in a direct sequel to The Accountant called The Accountant 2. This marks a potentially record-breaking or perhaps a record-setting moment in Hollywood.

With the unfortunate history of portrayals of many marginalized communities, the first films to kick open the door to mainstream representation were often made outside of a community, resulting in work that is deemed problematic in today’s environment. Chasing Amy being one such example: though the third film from Kevin Smith met some controversy, it did not have picket lines that his fourth, Dogma, would invite.
For Sav Rodgers, a kid growing up in Kanas who adored Ben Affleck, Chasing Amy became a gateway into understanding themselves and, ultimately, who they wanted to become. In his highly personal feature film debut, the trans filmmaker expands upon his viral Ted talk, unpacking multiple problems with Chasing Amy and the ’90s independent film scene. It was a time of gatekeepers that often, intentionally or not, suppressed mainstream LGBTQ films made from within the community, bankrolling and elevating voices like Kevin Smith––in his sheer provocation,...

Clerks III filmmaker Kevin Smith is making the most of his new lease on life, and that includes phase two of his friendship with longtime collaborator Ben Affleck. The two met during the audition process for Mallrats in 1994, and at the time, Affleck credited Smith’s directorial debut, Clerks, for inspiring him to co-write his own screenplay that he’d just sold. That script was called Good Will Hunting. From there, the duo made six movies together, but in the late 2000s, a near decade-long estrangement unfolded for one reason or another.
In February 2018, Smith suffered a widowmaker heart attack, and his brush with death prompted him to completely change his lifestyle as he’s now become a devout vegan. The Jersey native was also reinvigorated creatively, and he got the ball rolling on Jay and Silent Bob Reboot later that year, with an early 2019 production schedule planned.

Kevin Smith’s upcoming meta sequel “Clerks III” is both a tribute to the struggles that Smith endured to make his first film and a celebration of the cinematic universe he built through his company, View Askew Productions. And it just wouldn’t be a View Askewniverse movie without Ben Affleck.
Though Affleck didn’t appear in the original “Clerks,” he has been a fixture in Smith’s films ever since. After famously playing the Asshole From Fashionable Male in “Mallrats” and Holden McNeil in “Chasing Amy,” he had memorable cameos in films like “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back,” “Clerks II,” and “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.”
So when the time came to shoot the long-delayed “Clerks III,” Smith knew he had to reach out to Affleck about a cameo. And his old friend was happy to oblige.

My second occasion using Rakuten TV to rent a movie was with this flick, a flick I’ve been anticipating since it was first announced and caused me to actually write a whole “Road to Reboot” series here on Nerdly. I’ve been a Kevin Smith fan since the 90s and was excited to check out his return to the View Askewniverse with Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. Rakuten TV is so simple to use, so streamlined and easy, that it was cool to just jump onto the website and rent the film I wanted with just a few clicks. The picture was flawless, there was no buffering or messing around, it...

Ben Affleck stars in drama The Way Back, reuniting with The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor for a story that’s close to home.
The Way Back may be a Warner Bros. Pictures drama starring Ben Affleck, but the film, which focuses on a high school basketball coach battling alcoholism, also seems to be a therapeutic performance exercise for its star, who, in recent years, has made headlines for that very issue.
Gavin O’Connor directed The Way Back, reuniting with Ben Affleck, whom he directed in the acclaimed 2014 action drama, The Accountant, for which sequel plans are still in the works. O’Connor worked off a screenplay by Brad Ingelsby, who’s known from 2013’s Out of the Furnace, 2015’s Run All Night, 2018’s American Woman and The Friend, a drama that releases this weekend, starring Casey Affleck and Dakota Johnson.

We continue down our Road to Reboot, and we reach one of the last hurdles, with Kevin Smith’s ultra-meta 2001 flick, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back.
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back is one of those moments in time when the planets aligned and true cinematic brilliance was able to me made. I kid… this is one of those moments when Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes took to the streets, began to hump windows, walk around with a chimp and attempt to fly to Hollywood to step “Bluntman and Chronic” the superhero movie based on them, from being made. There’s so many in-jokes and meta moments here, characters from previous Smith movies and even actors playing themselves. Ben Affleck appears as both himself and as Holden McNeil, the character he played in Chasing Amy. It’s wild.

Last week, Kevin Smith released Jay and Silent Bob Reboot as a two night special through Fathom Events. The movie is a lot of fun and very much in the wheelhouse of Smith fans. To celebrate that release, as well as the upcoming further unveiling of the film through a Roadshow style release, complete with Smith Q&a’s after, I’m going to be updating my list of the filmmaker’s best work to date. This flick is another quality effort of his, though really just meant for the fans, as well as Smith himself. Still, if you get a chance to check it out, it’s well worth your time… The film is, obviously, a sequel to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, while being a bit of a rebook/remake as well. In fact, it’s also a satire of how Hollywood reboots all intellectual property these days.
