Nick Taylor and Cláudio Alves watch and recap RuPaul’s Drag Race season sixteen. This week, it’s time for the grand finale…
Look at those ponytails! Sasha Colby's impact is immeasurable.
CLÁUDIO: Better late than never, amirite? Well, even if I’m not, please pretend.
Many days have passed since season sixteen drew to a close, with Taiwan goddess Nymphia Wind crowned America’s next drag superstar. It was a conclusion I wished for but wasn’t expecting, thinking Philly had the win secured up until those final minutes. After all, nothing in the season’s edit positioned the Banana Buddha as a threat, mostly ignoring her to the point she was invisible for a couple of episodes in the middle. On the other hand, Sapphira had winner energy from the go, a notion bolstered by the judges’ unvarying praise and four wins to her name. It’s easy...

Previously in episode 15, the eliminated queens returned to compete in a first ever “LipSync Lalaparuza Smackdown – Reunited” episode. In a nine-lip sync tournament, Morphine Love Dion came out on top as the ultimate lip sync assassin of the season and was named “Queen of She Already Done Had Hereses” with a $50,000 cash prize.
In this week’s final episode, Nymphia, Jane and Sapphira all perform an original number and then a third place finisher is determined. Spoiler Alert: This contains major spoilers for the finale of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
Banana fever reigns supreme after “RuPaul’s Drag Race” crowned America’s next drag superstar.
Season 16 winner Nymphia Wind snatched the crown from fellow finalists Plane Jane and Sapphira Cristál. With her win, Nymphia makes “Drag Race” history as the first-ever Taiwanese queen and the third Api winner, following in the footsteps of Season 3’s winner Raja and Season 15 queen Sasha Colby.
In a final lip sync battle, the 28-year-old had the edge with her dance moves and lip-syncing against Sapphira as they performed to Kylie Minogue’s “Padam Padam.”
Crowned America’s next drag superstar, Nymphia told the audience: “To those who don’t feel like they don’t belong, just remember to live fearlessly and have courage to live your truth.” She added, “Taiwan, this is for you.”

Long live the new queen! Season 16 of RuPaul’s Drag Race reached its dramatic conclusion on Friday, culminating with a lip sync smackdown for the crown.
This time around, it really was any queen’s game. A recent TVLine poll was split almost completely evenly between the final trio — Nymphia Wind, Plane Jane and Sapphira Cristál — with Sapphira edging out her tied competitors by only a single percent. Even the queens’ track records are remarkably similar; Plane and Sapphira each have four wins under their belts, while Nymphia has three.

Each week on “Whatcha Packin’,” Michelle Visage interviews the recently eliminated queen, but for the three finalists of season 16 she’s sitting down to chat ahead of the April 19 “Grand Finale.” Sapphira Cristál and Michelle bond over being foodies, mothers, and Sapphira’s embrace of being slew footed. Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In her interview with Michelle, Sapphira tells the story of how she started singing opera at the age of 13 by attending a performing and visual arts high school, but she was first inspired when she saw “La Boheme” at the age of four and was enthralled. She goes on to say that drag and opera happened simultaneously for her because she came to drag by way of opera. Nick Taylor and Cláudio Alves are watching and recapping RuPaul’s Drag Race season sixteen. This week, it’s time for episode fifteen…
This week, Megami pulls a Silky and a star is born.
CLÁUDIO: After weeks of complaining about the season’s declining quality, the Drag Race producers shut me right up. This spin on a reunion episode is the best of the year, a super-charged queer Super Bowl of lipsyncing that serves as a respite before next week’s finale. Most of the girls brought their A-game, fighting for their Ru-demption with everything they got, and even the losers seemed to have a good time. Well, most of them. More important, still, was how the hour felt formed around the arc of one particular queen, subverting folks’ expectations both among the audience and the contenders themselves. To paraphrase Mother Jinkx, anyone saying Megami isn’t a star after this...

Nick Taylor and Cláudio Alves are watching and recapping RuPaul’s Drag Race season sixteen. This week, it’s time for episode fourteen…
Ronan Farrow has that All Stars glow-up.
CLÁUDIO: Just when we were starting to think the season had turned into a two-way race for the crown between Sapphira and Plane, here comes a new episode to shake things up. After years of top fours and a one-time fiver, RuPaul’s Drag Race has returned to a triadic finale, using this fourteenth chapter to boot its fourth-placer, fragilize one of the frontrunners’ bid, and bolster another contender’s narrative. A well-produced piece of television, this game-changer hour felt like a gift to Nymphia Wind fans everywhere, making it look like she might stand a chance after all. Considering her strange edit, I’m skeptical, but this episode gave me some much-needed hope. Were you similarly enthused, or is this season...

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on April 5 with episode 14 on MTV. Airing concurrently with the main show is its tea-spilling, backstage-focused sister series “Untucked,” now in its 15th season. For this week’s challenge, the final four, referred to as the semi-finalists, developed concepts for a memoir, wrote stories about their lives and then presented those ideas to Matt Rogers in a live podcast interview.
After critiques from the judges, Sapphira Cristál, Plane Jane, Q and Nymphia Wind made their way to the “Untucked Lounge” where Jane and Q were convinced that they were the bottom two. Both girls could not look beyond the negative comments they received from the judges on stage. Jane knew that she didn’t show enough vulnerability in her podcast and Q was disappointed that she didn’t deliver a better look for her book cover photo shoot. On the flip side, Sapphira and Nymphia...

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on April 5 with the fourteenth episode in RuPaul’s quest to find “America’s next drag superstar.” Previously in episode 13, Sapphira Cristál found herself vulnerable to elimination for the first time in the competition after serving up the judges’ least favorite “family resemblance” in the drag makeover challenge. In the Lip Sync for Your Life, her track record proved too impressive for Morphine Love Dion, lip syncing for the fourth time, to overcome.
Seated at the judges’ dais this week for episode 14 titled “Booked & Blessed” was Emmy winning host RuPaul Charles, longtime bestie Michelle Visage, recurring judge Ts Madison, and journalist Ronan Farrow as the special guest judge.
The queens still vying for the crown are: Nymphia Wind, Plane Jane, Q, and Sapphira Cristál.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on March 22 with episode 12 on MTV. Airing concurrently with the main show is its tea-spilling, backstage-focused sister series “Untucked,” now in its 15th season. For this week’s challenge, the final six queens worked in pairs to design bathroom spaces in “Bathroom Hunties,” a “House Hunters” spoof. Based on critiques from the judges, Sapphira Cristál and Plane Jane were feeling the most confident about their chances at a win as the queens made their way to the Untucked Lounge.
All the queens thought that the challenge and the improv aspect was “harder than the seminars” from last week. That was, in part, why Jane had a “breakdown” in the Werk Room where she showed the first crack in the armor with a lack of confidence going into the performance. She explained that the challenges are getting harder and though she’s “fueled by delusion,” that...

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on March 22 with the twelfth episode in RuPaul’s quest to find “America’s next drag superstar.” Previously in episode 11, the girls were challenged by getting into their corporate gig to deliver informative sessions on “Drag Awareness.” Sapphira Cristál outshined the members of her group, earning a third maxi challenge for herself and sending Morphine Love Dion into the Lip Sync for Your Life against fellow Miami queen Mhi’ya Iman Le’Paige. In her fourth trip to the bottom, Mhi’ya was bested by Morphine and sent packing.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on March 15 with the eleventh episode in RuPaul’s quest to find “America’s next drag superstar.” Previously in episode ten, the queens promoted the power of voting by adding original verses to RuPaul’s newest hit “Power.” In a surprising twist, Sapphira Cristál and Morphine Love Dion were named the top two and asked to face off in a Lip Sync for the Win. Sapphira earned her second maxi challenge win by defeating Morphine while Plane Jane contributed to what became a non-elimination episode by sparing Nymphia Wind with her soon-to-expire Immunity Potion.

CLÁUDIO: It’s been quite the week to grumble about robbed queens, but enough about the Oscars. In RuPaul’s Prison Experiment, there were no such robberies. Indeed, there isn’t even an elimination to discuss since Mother Reverend Charles blessed us with a non-elimination episode. I’m not sure how I feel about that last bit, but I can’t help but cheer as Sapphira cements her claim on the crown. “RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on March 1 with the ninth episode in RuPaul’s quest to find “America’s next drag superstar.” Previously in episode eight, Plane Jane joined Nymphia Wind and Plasma at the top of the tracking board with her second maxi challenge win in the iconic “Snatch Game.” At the bottom was Morphine Love Dion who sadly had to send her sister Xunami Muse home in the Lip Sync for Your Life.
This week, the remaining 8 queens get behind the sewing machine again for a Neo-Goth design challenge. Following Friday’s eighth episode, reigning champion and Mother of season 15 Sasha Colby makes her recap debut to break down this season’s “Snatch Game” performances. Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap of the episode, Sasha and Trixie have fun addressing the “unsolicited shade” of this season and how even when Plane Jane calls anyone “sister” feels like subtle shade as well. Sasha gives Jane some defense by admitting that as drag queens they all “just have a crippling desire for people to love us” and Jane is no different. When it came to the reading challenge of her season, Sasha was impressed by Loosey Laduca and Malaysia Babydoll Foxx; this season the standouts for her were Jane and Xunami Muse.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on February 23 with the eighth episode in RuPaul’s quest to find “America’s next drag superstar.” Previously in episode seven, Plasma enjoyed her shining moment as the star and challenge winner in “The Sound of Rusic” while Mhi’ya Iman Le’Paige and Megami didn’t strike a chord with the judges in their supporting roles. Despite a flipless Lip Sync for Your Life, Mhi’ya came out on top once again and sent Megami back to New York.
This week, the remaining 9 queens head to the celebrity dais with the classic impersonation challenge, “Snatch Game.” Seated at the judges’ dais for episode 8 was Emmy winning host RuPaul Charles, longtime bestie Michelle Visage, recurring judge Carson Kressley, and actress Kyra Sedgwick as the extra special guest.
The queens still vying for the crown are: Dawn, Mhi’ya Iman Le’Paige, Morphine Love Dion, Nymphia Wind,...

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on February 16 with the seventh episode in RuPaul’s quest to find “America’s next drag superstar.” Previously in episode six, Geneva Karr‘s branded doll edition was among the judges’ least favorite and she found herself in the bottom for the third time. This time she faced off against Mhi’ya Iman Le’Paige who came fully loaded with an arsenal of lip synching tricks and sent Geneva packing. Meanwhile, Q broke the curse of safety and finally earned her first maxi challenge win.
This week, the remaining 10 queens take the stage with song and dance in the dynamic Rusical challenge. Seated at the judges’ dais for episode 7 titled “The Sound of Rusic” was Emmy winning host RuPaul Charles, longtime bestie Michelle Visage, recurring judge Ross Mathews, and musical theater director and choreographer Adam Shankman as the extra special guest.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on February 9 with episode 6 on MTV. Airing concurrently with the main show is its tea-spilling, backstage-focused sister series “Untucked,” now in its 15th season. For this week’s challenge, the 11 remaining queens were asked to bring their sewing, branding and storytelling skills to the table all at once by creating fresh looks for a doll version of themselves. Returning first to the Werk Room as this week’s safe queens was freshly immunized Sapphira Cristál as well as Morphine Love Dion, Xunami Muse, Megami and Nymphia Wind.
Sapphira took RuPaul Charles up on the opportunity to use her Immunity Potion on herself this week, admittedly yet regrettably spooked by the commentary the other girls had offered up earlier in the day and having been vulnerable in last week’s “Girl Groups” challenge. Once she used the potion, Sapphira quickly realized that she may not have...

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on February 9 with the sixth episode in RuPaul’s quest to find “America’s next drag superstar.” Previously in episode five, Amanda Tori Meating wowed her peers and the judges with her dancing skills in the “Girl Groups” challenge, but a miss on concept on the runway landed her in the bottom two anyway. In a Lip Sync for Your Life to new-to-the-bottom Q, Amanda lost out and became the third queen to leave the competition.
This week, the remaining 11 queens return to the sewing machine for what Ru refers to as a “design, branding and storytelling” challenge to create a customized doll version of themselves. Seated at the judges’ dais for episode 6 titled “Welcome to the DollHouse” was Emmy winning host RuPaul Charles, longtime bestie Michelle Visage, recurring judge Ts Madison, and legendary stylist Law Roach as the extra special guest.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on January 19 with the third episode in RuPaul’s quest to find “America’s next drag superstar.” In the premiere episodes Part 1 and Part 2, the 14 all new queens were split into two groups of seven to show off their talents and introduce themselves to the judges. Following the “Rate-a-Queen” twist where the queens ranked each other for the week and two lip syncs for the win, Sapphira Cristál and Plane Jane were declared the first two winners of the season and each earned immunity from a future elimination.
This week, all 14 queens met their entire cast together for the first time and then were challenged with a design challenge ahead of their walk in the seasonal fashion ball. Seated at the judges’ dais for episode 3 titled “The Mother of All Balls” was Emmy winning host RuPaul Charles, longtime bestie Michelle Visage, recurring judge Carson Kressley,...

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 kick started 2024 on January 5 with Part 1 of its two-part premiere. In this first episode, only one half of the new cast began the competition to begin “America’s next drag superstar” in two challenges: a photo shoot on RuPaul’s front porch and a talent extravaganza to show off their talent skills. But don’t get too comfortable because Ru threw in a “twystery” or two for the girlies as well.
Seated at the judges’ dais for episode 1 titled “Rate-a-Queen” was Emmy winning host RuPaul Charles, longtime bestie Michelle Visage, recurring judge Carson Kressley, and Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron as the extra special guest.
The seven queens introduced this week are: Amanda Tori Meating, Dawn, Mirage, Morphine Love Dion, Q, Sapphira Cristál, and Xunami Muse.

Airing concurrently with the main show is its tea-spilling, backstage-focused sister series “Untucked,” now in its 15th season. In episode 1 of “Untucked,” the first seven queens to enter the competition reflected on the new twist, their performances in the “MTV Spring Break Talent Show” and prepared to cast their votes for the week.

Spoiler Alert: This contains spoilers from the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 16.
Charlize Theron expressed her strong support for the drag community in her debut as a guest judge on the season premiere of MTV’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
In the opening episode of Season 16, the Oscar-winning actor and longtime LGBTQ told the queens that the groundswell of efforts to curb the rights of drag performers is driven by fear and ignorance.
“Given the climate in our country right now, there’s a lot of energy being put toward your community not existing. I truly believe that all of that is coming from a place of fear,” Theron told the contenders on the long-running competition series. “The beauty of what your community brings and the truth of who you are and represent will come out. Don’t give up.”
Contender Xuname Muse, daughter of Kandy Muse, praised Theron for speaking out.
