The Drake-Kendrick Lamar showdown will continue — at the 2024 BET Awards.
The rappers will compete in two categories at the June 30 show: best male hip-hop artist and best collaboration. In the latter category, Drake is nominated for “Rich Baby Daddy” with Sza and Sexyy Red, while Lamar is nominated for his guest verse on the remix of Beyoncé’s “America Has a Problem.”
Drake is the show’s top contender with seven nominations, thanks to his album For All the Dogs (Scary Hours Edition). Lamar didn’t release an album that was eligible this year. The Canadian rapper’s other nominations include album of the year, best male R&b/pop artist and viewer’s choice for “Rich Baby Daddy.” He’s nominated twice in the video of the year category: “Rich Baby Daddy” and his guest verse on J. Cole’s “First Person Shooter,” the late 2023 track that reignited his feud with Lamar.

Lil Wayne has been rapping for over two decades, and throughout that time, the New Orleans native has earned the respect of the hip-hop world for his lyrical abilities. At the same time, Wayne has found himself in legal trouble various times, even going to prison in 2010 for a weapons charge. A decade later in 2020, Wayne pled guilty to a federal weapons possession charge, leaving him facing up to 10 years in prison. But in January 2021, in the final hours of Donald Trump’s presidency, the 45th president used his pardon powers to give an executive grant of clemency to Wayne.

What happens when a made-up, virtual rapper signs a deal with a major record label? In the case of Fn Meka, a digitally rendered Black artist largely controlled by artificial intelligence and non-Black creators, major missteps and public backlash over “digital blackface” quickly led to a fiery end. Within weeks, Capitol Records scrapped his deal, his Instagram went private and most of his TikToks were deleted.
The saga resurfaced ongoing conversations about cultural appropriation and racism in AI, given Meka’s use of the N-word and fabricated backstory about his time spent in prison. That the “robot rapper” even received a record deal and amassed more than 10 million followers on TikTok, though, shows that the interest in virtual influencers has persisted, six years after another virtual project — Lil Miquela, an L.A.-based singer and model — became an online sensation.

In 2020, a “top 3 biggest pet peeves” TikTok created by a marketing company without a website can land a former high school football player a record deal. “Psycho!” is just the fifth track ever released by the 19-year-old Mason Rupper, a Salt Lake City, Utah native who began writing songs only after a broken collar bone took him off the football field. Last summer, “Pyscho!” — embittered and dead-eyed, but rousing — started to gain popularity in gaming videos, earning around 100,000 streams a day, and labels began messaging Masn.

Juice Wrld, a young rapper from Chicago who was just starting to make his mark in the music industry, died Sunday at age 21.
The hip-hop star, real name Jarad Anthony Higgins, had recently signed with Interscope Records. He released his album “Death Race for Love” in March 2019, which made it to No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Higgins suffered a “medical emergency” early Sunday morning at Chicago’s Midway Airport, according to published reports. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died.
As news of the rapper, singer and musician’s death spread, his friends, fellow artists and record label shared tributes on social media.
“Juice made a profound impact on the world in such a short period of time. He was a gentle soul, whose creativity knew no bounds, an exceptional human being and artist who loved and cared for his fans above everything else,” Interscope said in a statement on Twitter.
