The Handmaid’s Tale traveled outside the confines of Gilead for much of season five, expanding the story of June Osborne, played by Elisabeth Moss, after her escape from the totalitarian society at the center of the Hulu series. The first two episodes, in fact, picked up in Canada in the 24 hours after the show’s most violent act yet, when June led her fellow handmaid’s in the brutal murder of her former abuser, Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes).
And those episodes, both directed by Moss, kicked off the tone of the entire penultimate season, explain cinematographer Nicola Daley, costume designer Leslie Kavanagh and composer Adam Taylor in a THR Presents panel, powered by Vision Media. Particularly when the double-episode premiere ended with June’s abducted daughter Hannah (Jordana Blake) being used as a pawn by June’s Gilead nemesis Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) during the worldwide broadcast of Fred’s funeral.

Christine Baranski‘s surprise inclusion for “The Good Fight” wasn’t the only shocker that last year’s Best Drama TV Actress Golden Globe lineup delivered. After being left out for the third season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” two years earlier, Elisabeth Moss returned to the category for its fourth installment. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which had shut out Season 3 of the Hulu drama across the board, had seemingly moved on from the show and rarely invites people back to the party after dropping them for a regular series. The fact that Moss was able to overcome all these hurdles is a feather in her cap, and the reason you shouldn’t be caught off guard if she now pulls off yet another nomination, for Season 5, despite facing much stiffer competition this time around.
In hindsight, the actor’s return to the TV drama actress lineup shouldn’t have been that surprising at all.

Toto, we’re not in Gilead anymore.
“The Handmaid’s Tale” stayed focused on its central dystopia until Season 4, when June (Elisabeth Moss) escaped to Canada, and even then she couldn’t escape Gilead. June returned multiple times, including in Season 5 to rescue her daughter Hannah (Jordana Blake) from a life of subservience to men.
But the world has changed by the Season 5 finale, “Safe,” which premiered November 9. Gilead is crumbling from within, mainly at the hands of its architect, Joseph Lawrence (Bradley Whitford). The Waterfords, two of its most prolific and vocal advocates, are no more, with Fred dead (Joseph Fiennes) and his widow Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) questioning her path forward. It’s Serena’s grueling internal journey and June’s willingness to compromise that brings both of them to the same time, place, and goal when they meet on a train in the Season 5 finale.

The fifth season of Hulu’s dystopian series began by pitting June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) against Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski). At the end of the two-episode premiere, Serena had brought June’s Gilead-captive daughter, Hannah (Jordana Blake), into view during a global broadcast of the funeral for her late husband, Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) — and shot the camera a knowing smirk intended for June. Thousands of miles away in Canada, June received the message loud and clear.
But the world of The Handmaid’s Tale moves quickly and, by the pivotal seventh episode, June was faced with the impossible choice of helping Serena deliver her newborn baby or letting her die when the pair were stranded together in No Man’s Land,...

[The story contains spoilers from the ninth episode of season five of The Handmaid’s Tale.]
Bradley Whitford recalls a key tip he received when directing his first episode of The Handmaid’s Tale.
The script is often lying, he was told by creator and showrunner Bruce Miller. And as a director, it was his job to tell the truth.
For his first episode behind the camera — the ninth episode and penultimate hour of season five, “Allegiance” — the actor who plays Gilead Commander Lawrence was tasked with seeking out the truth about his own character. For the past couple episodes, Lawrence has been trying to convince June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) to return to Gilead — the oppressive regime and country she escaped — and live in New Bethlehem, a modernized, liberal island settlement where refugees can return with amnesty and reunite with lost family and friends. A step in the right direction, he says, to help redeem himself...

To stay in business over a long time, a series has to evolve. I understand that. But reinvention is tricky and in the search for more road, a series can also lose its way. The Handmaid’s Tale is not the taut, menacing thriller it once was.
In truth, I’m not sure it has any politics anymore. Men like Commander Lawrence, Gilead’s main architect, are allowed to take a hero’s turn, however slight, while women are reduced to hysterical rage. June, Serena, Mrs Wheeler, and Rita, who last week told June that she would return to Gilead if it meant she could see her son again. [This story contains spoilers from the two-episode premiere of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale.]
A smirk and a growl.
Those were the dueling images The Handmaid’s Tale left for viewers when it returned.
The smirk came from Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski), with the once-reigning Gilead wife enjoying her winning moment when, during a global broadcast of her late husband’s funeral, she brings Hannah (Jordana Blake) into her televised appearance. And the growl came from June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss), who was on the receiving end of that message, as she watched her pre-teen daughter being used as a pawn.
But the actresses who play the starring women on Hulu’s Emmy-winning dystopian series say those physical reactions are just the tip of the iceberg as the show begins its penultimate season.
“The June v. Serena concept is not going to be as simple as you may think,” Elisabeth Moss, who also directed the first two episodes,...

“Everything tastes better when Fred is dead.”
June Osborne speaks those words while sitting at a diner and having a celebratory meal, to the tune of Dolly Parton’s “Gettin’ Happy.” The irony of the uplifting vibe is that Elisabeth Moss’ starring character — who is in a state of shock after leading the violent group murder of her former commander and abuser, Gilead leader Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes), as is evidenced by his dried blood remaining caked on her face and hands — only finds a fleeting moment of happiness while in the eatery with her fellow former handmaids.
“They’re just going to town and eating as much food as they can, and it’s sort of bacchanal. They’re feasting like warriors,” Moss, who also directed the premiere episode “Morning,” told The Hollywood Reporter when speaking about the diner scene,...

The handmaids are getting out of Gilead — but not for another year. Hulu has renewed “The Handmaid’s Tale” for a sixth and final season; the news comes six days ahead of the streaming drama’s season 5 premiere.
The series’ creator and showrunner Bruce Miller has been developing sequel series “The Testaments,” which picks up well after the end of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” for years at Hulu, though it has not yet been ordered to series.
“The Handmaid’s Tale,” which made Hulu the first streaming service to win a Primetime Emmy Award in the Best Series category in 2017, is an adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s classic novel of the same name. The series has won 15 Emmy Awards, as well as a Peabody.

When The Handmaid’s Tale returns, June will be confronting the ramifications of the coup she pulled in the season four finale.
The ending had left the fate of Elisabeth Moss’ starring character up in the air, with showrunner Bruce Miller and Moss each speaking about the intentional ambiguity and open possibilities for season five. Would June (Moss) stay and risk her freedom, go on the run after what she did, or return to Gilead for a fight? After leaving viewers rudderless, The Handmaid’s Tale seems to be signaling where June is headed when Hulu’s hit dystopian drama kicks off. The show returns with two episodes on Sept. 14, followed by a weekly rollout.

Gilead's head handmaid is preparing her return. Hulu has released the trailer for season five of The Handmaid's Tale, which drops Sept. 14 on the streamer. And, though June (Elisabeth Moss) is safely ensconced in Canada, she's prepping for a return to the country that stole her child Hannah (Jordana Blake). "They're not going to be looking for somebody going back into Gilead," she reasons. Under his eye, indeed. In the full-length trailer, we find June right where we left her after the events of season four—high off her brutal murder of her former Commander, Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes). Clearly, her friends and family in...

Elisabeth Moss has been sent good weather by the Screen Actors Guild Awards, having just landed her 16th and 17th career nominations for individual and ensemble acting for “The Handmaid’s Tale.” She earns the two citations for the Hulu drama’s fourth season to match those she received for all three of the show’s past installments (2018-20). Even though the actor has triumphed twice as part of the “Mad Men” ensemble (2009-10), she has yet to take home a solo statuette. Could this be the year in which she finally gets to ascend the podium and shout “Praise be!”?
In the drama actress category, Moss finds herself in the company of two women from “The Morning Show,” Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, as well as “Squid Game’s” Jung Ho-yeon and “Succession’s” Sarah Snook. Thirteen-time nominee Aniston has the most SAG Awards victories to her name, having won...

Elisabeth Moss has never won an individual Screen Actors Guild Award. A 15-time nominee, she has won twice as part of the “Mad Men” ensemble but lost all six of her solo nominations, of which she earned two for “Mad Men” and and three for Hulu’s ”The Handmaid’s Tale” (2018-20) for TV drama actress, and one for “Top of the Lake” (2014) for limited Series/TV movie actress. It’s why I now ask of you, dear SAG Awards voters, to consider finally rewarding Moss individually for her career-defining work in “Handmaid’s'” Season 4.
The fourth installment picks up with Moss’ June Osborne on the run, and the actor juggles four discernible but inextricably intertwined sides of her character: a traumatized handmaid, a solicitous mother and wife, a vengeful, rage-driven rebel, and a guilt-ridden survivor. Take, for instance, the scene from the Season 4 opener, “Pigs,” in which June directs child...

Last decade, only two performers took home the Best Drama Actress Emmy more than once for the same show: Claire Danes for “Homeland” back to back in 2012 and ’13 and Julianna Margulies for “The Good Wife” in 2011 and ’14 — both under the tape system and on a ranked ballot. The Emmys switched to a popular vote in 2015 to select the winners, which, coincidentally or not, has resulted in the drama actress category producing a different champ every year. While it looks like “The Crown’s” Emma Corrin, who currently tops our odds, is going to continue this trend, there’s one nominee in this year’s lineup who could stop it: “The Handmaid’s Tale‘s” Elisabeth Moss. After winning drama actress for the Hulu drama’s debut installment in 2017, the now 14-time nominee, who is in third in our odds, could (and should) be catapulted to the top of the category...

“Moira is just looking for something to be easy,” Emmy Award winner Samira Wiley says about her character’s intentions in the fourth season of Hulu‘s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which recently returned with new episodes. In our exclusive video interview (watch above), the actress discusses how Moira searches for happiness in post-Gilead life, is affected by having been a queer handmaid in Gilead and takes in her reunion with June (Elisabeth Moss).
The series is based on Margaret Atwood‘s 1985 novel of the same name, which is set in a dystopian near-future America, where women are enslaved as ‘handmaids’ due to plummeting birth-rates and forced to bear children for the ruling class in the new authoritarian Gilead theocracy. Even though the show has made explicit that shaking Gilead is onerous even outside of its parameters, Wiley highlights that Moira is looking for “what kind of happiness can be attached” to her life in Canada.
