He played ice hockey for the University of Michigan, and was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings. He decided to join the Japan Ice Hockey League. He eventually became a coach, and coached the Japanese hockey team at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.
He was born in a WWII Japanese internment camp in British Columbia, Canada. His family then moved to Neys, Ontario, a camp near Thunder Bay. After the war, his family settled in Chatham, Ontario.
