Law & Order very nearly became the longest-running crime drama on television. If it hadn't been for a 10-year hiatus, it would have reached its 24th season a long time ago.
Thanks to that break, sister show Law & Order: Svu has pulled ahead by two seasons.
Still, Law & Order is one of NBC's most iconic shows, from its "dun dun" chime between scenes to its filming on location in New York City. It's high time for a cast and character guide to help you keep track of who you can expect to see (and not see!) during Law & Order Season 24.
Two Characters Are Not Coming Back
Many viewers were shocked when Jack McCoy (Sam Waterson) left Law & Order after over 400 episodes.
Waterson had been with the series since Season 4 and was probably more closely identified with it than any other character.

Law & Order Season 24: Everything We Know So Far About the Latest Season of NBC's Iconic Crime Drama
Thursday nights wouldn't be the same without Law & Order.
The flagship cop/legal drama took a hiatus between 2010 and 2021, but it'll be kicking off NBC's Thursday night marathon of crime dramas again this fall.
That means more cases ripped from the headlines, more of Price butting heads with the new Da, and probably more miraculous last-minute wins in the courtroom.
The flagship series hasn't deviated much from the formula that made Law & Order successful in the 1990s. The cops still investigate a case straight out of recent news, usually a murder, and then turn the defendant over to the Da's office to be prosecuted.
Nowadays, there's more diversity in the police and legal sides of the criminal justice system than when Law & Order first began, and there's less ambiguity in the courtroom.

Ugh. We got rid of the annoying Chief McGrath only for Svu to introduce an even more irritating character.
Law & Order: Svu Season 25 Episode 13 began with Heidi Russell barging into a meeting and constantly interrupting Benson, and nothing this woman did corrected that initial impression of her as a nuisance who doesn't care about justice.
The case was interesting, minus Heidi's contributions, but the season ended on a strange note that Bensler fans might not have appreciated as much as the writers expected.
Heidi Russell is The Worst Kind of Ada
Russell's arrogance, refusal to admit she was wrong and insistence that closing the case was more important than getting the right guy made her incredibly ill-suited for the Ada job.
Could someone go to Nicholas Baxter and demand she be removed? Please?
So far, this woman has zero redeeming values. If she's ever going to grace our screens again,...

Law & Order has been one of NBC's flagship programs for 23 years despite a ten-year hiatus, but is the formula that made it famous outdated now?
The original series pioneered the idea of "ripped from the headlines" stories and a format dedicating half of each episode to the police investigation and the other half to the arrestee's trial. This proved to be so popular that it spawned a ton of sequels and spinoffs.
Law & Order: Svu is the most successful, having just been renewed for a 26th season. However, Svu doesn't follow the format of its parent show most of the time, often dedicating 90% or more of the hour to the police investigation -- should its parent series follow suit?

Sam Waterson's departure from Law & Order left a hole that'll be hard to fill. Waterson played Jack McCoy for 30 years, making his name synonymous with the long-running police/lawyer procedural.
Someone had to take his place, and Tony Goldwyn is not only an accomplished actor in his own right but has appeared within the Law & Order universe before. (Goldwyn played Frank Goren on Law & Order: Criminal Intent.)
Goldwyn's Nicholas Baxter has only had a few episodes to shine in. He's a different type of district attorney than McCoy, so his character will take some getting used to, but the change in direction could be precisely what Law & Order Season 23 needs.
McCoy was often soft-spoken, though he could get loud when he was passionately angry and mostly stayed in his office. Baxter differentiated himself from the get-go; his first scene involved inserting himself into a crime scene and introducing himself.

“Law & Order” crossovers never fail to open up sweet opportunities where our favorite characters from different “Law & Order” universes get to meet and interact with each other. As a result of this, crossover episodes has become something that the long-running show’s dedicated fandom “L&o” occasionally yearn for. Well, “Law and Order’s” latest addition Tony Goldwyn wants this too.
Tony Goldwyn – Wants Kerry Washington To Guest Star On “Law & Order”
“Scandal’s” Tony Goldwyn recently joined “Law & Order” as District Attorney Nicholas Baxter after Sam Waterston’s Jack McCoy retired from the role.

There are more stories to be told. NBC has renewed the Law & Order TV series for a 24th season. Season 23, which has 13 episodes (there are fewer episodes due to the industry strikes), will finish airing in May.
A legal drama series, the Law & Order TV show stars Hugh Dancy, Camryn Manheim, Odelya Halevi, Mehcad Brooks, Reid Scott, and Tony Goldwyn. Law & Order and Law & Order: Svu will be back for the 2024-25 season after NBC renewed the pair of shows but spinoff Law & Order: Organized Crime is in a slightly more precarious position.
The network has renewed Law & Order for Season 24, while Law & Order: Svu will be back for Season 26.
The future of Law & Order: Organized Crime, which is in its fourth season, is still in discussion at the network. It has been the lowest rated of Dick Wolf’s NBC shows and has had a number of showrunners over its course. Matt Olmstead started out as showrunner, replaced by Ilene Chaiken, who was replaced by Barry O’Brien. Bryan Goluboff was named showrunner for Season 3 but left after three months, replaced by Sean Jablonski, who also left shortly after due to “creative differences” and was replaced by David Graziano. John Shiban is showrunner for Season 4.

Is Law & Order the perfect place to stage a Scandal reunion? New star Tony Goldwyn seems to think so as he invited former costar and friend Kerry Washington to join the mix during an appearance on the Today Show. Goldwyn was on the NBC morning program on Tuesday, March 19, to promote the network’s hit procedural which he has joined for Season 23, taking over as lead following Sam Waterston’s exit. The actor plays new Da Nicholas Baxter, who hails from a political dynasty. Three weeks after Law & Order bid farewell to Sam Waterston, the NBC procedural on Thursday introduced Tony Goldwyn as the newest District Attorney.
Usually, the legal part of the drama doesn’t happen until later in the episode, but Goldwyn’s Nicholas Baxter joined the action at the top of the hour as Detectives Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) and Vincent Riley (Reid Scott) are investigating the bludgeoning death of multi-millionaire Jonah Barlowe.

He lingers at the scene for only a few seconds before telling the detectives that “I’ll do everything in my power to create a constructive and transparent relationship with the police. That’s it.”

Sam Waterston has officially left Law & Order after appearing on the show for more than 18 seasons.
The beloved actor portrayed Da Jack McCoy on the long-running NBC series and he said farewell in the fifth episode of season 23, which aired on Thursday night (February 22).
It was previously announced that Tony Goldwyn is joining the cast of the show as the new Da, though not much is known about his character yet. The character will be named Nicholas Baxter.
So, how did Jack McCoy say goodbye?

After successfully having a conviction in the episode, McCoy announced his plans to resign.
“I’ve been thinking about this for a while. It’s time, it just is,” McCoy said.
McCoy had just gone against the wishes of the mayor and knew that he would be facing a tough battle in the next election.
