All the most interesting people have the least-likely careers. (Says the man who started out as a Sf editor and somehow ended up doing content marketing for corporate lawyers.) Evan Dorkin was a fiery young cartoonist in the ’80s and 90s when I discovered his work, writing and drawing id-fueled scrawls like Milk & Cheese and The Eltingville Club . But somehow, along the way, his modern comics career is mostly about writing vaguely Lovecraftian-flavored fantasy/horror adventure stories for other artists to draw.
Like Beasts of Burden or Calla Cthulhu – or like this book: Blackwood , written by Dorkin with art by wife-and-husband team Veronica and Andy Fish.
Blackwood College seems to be just another mid-rank private learning institution, though it seems like all of their fields of study are specialized cases of anthropology with various cultural, occult, or religious bends. It’s not that simple, of course: Blackwood has Deep Secrets.

Word of mouth is still very much a thing in the entertainment world. Films, TV, books, and comics all benefit I would imagine as much from strong word of mouth as from advertising. Sabrina is a case in point. Being honest, this is not normally a book that would be on my immediate radar. I’m aware of the character, and of the recent Netflix show but little else beyond that. What I am aware of is that last year’s Sabrina mini-series, also by Kelly Thompson and Veronica Fish, was a bit of a sleeper book, that then grew into a cult hit, that finally morphed into a full blown success. That doesn’t happen by accident and, Archie Comics being a clever bunch, a second limited series – subtitled Something Wicked – has been greenlit and put out now.

Back in 2018, writer Evan Dorkin and artists Veronica Fish and Andy Fish first enrolled comic book readers in Blackwood College, a supernatural place where surviving to see another day takes precedence over getting passing grades in your classes. Following the macabre mayhem of the series' first four-issue run, Dark Horse Comics is bringing readers back to Blackwood College for another round of gory fun in Blackwood: The Mourning After. With the first issue coming out on February 12th, we recently had the pleasure of catching up with Evan, Veronica, and Andy for our latest Q&a feature to discuss what deadly pleasures readers can look forward to experiencing next at Blackwood College.
You can read our full Q&a with Evan, Veronica, and Andy below (as well as preview pages from the first issue), and to learn more about Blackwood: The Mourning After #1, visit Dark Horse Comics' website.
