Elvis Presley was well-known for giving gifts to family, friends, and strangers. Bill Belew, who designed the King of Rock and Roll’s iconic jumpsuits for almost a decade, witnessed his generosity firsthand. He recalled when Presley gifted a fan a diamond and emerald ring she admired with “love and gratitude.”
Elvis Presley gave a fan an expensive gift she admired but couldn’t afford
In an interview with Elvis.com.au, Bill Belew discussed one instance where he worked with a jeweler to create custom pieces for Elvis Presley to wear at Sonny West’s wedding to Judy Jordan in 1970. Presley sent him to Schwartz and Albusser on the new jewelry.
“And so I went down there, and that’s how I met Saul and Abe. And as time progressed, we got to know each other,” Belew explained.

Memory, the latest film by Mexican writer/director Michel Franco, is a performance- and character-driven relationship drama that also doubles as a family drama, with hints of the melodrama and thriller genres. Sylvia (Academy Award winner Jessica Chastain), a 40-something care worker and recovering substance abuser, and Saul, a middle-aged man suffering from early onset dementia, meet under the most inauspicious and inappropriate of circumstances: He follows her home after making eye contact with her at a school reunion. She, in turn, rejects his advances and leaves the unwanted visitor outside her door to fend for himself. He doesn’t. She finds him the next morning outside her doorstep, still waiting...

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Venice Film Festival. Ketchup Entertainment releases the film in select theaters on Friday, December 22, with expansion to follow on Friday, January 5.
Michel Franco’s “Memory” is in the tradition of movies about broken people coming together, with all the heartbreak and melodrama required.
But “Memory” bucks the tradition of the cold films previously made by the director of the apocalyptic 99-percent-uprising thriller “New Order” and high-school bullying drama “After Lucia.” They’re films that seem calm at the outset, but you wait for the other blood-dipped shoe to drop. That shoe never quite hits the ground in the peculiar and sensitive “Memory,” which stars Jessica Chastain as a 13-years-sober alcoholic who reconnects with a former school classmate, Saul (played by Peter Sarsgaard), at a reunion she doesn’t want to be at anyway.

Who said nothing good comes of high school reunions?
Michel Franco’s upcoming feature “Memory” follows Saul (Peter Sarsgaard) after he reconnects with former classmate Silvia (Jessica Chastain) at their reunion. After Saul stalks Silvia back to her home, the duo are forced to confront their shared past. The film will make its world premiere at 2023 Venice in competition, and has its North American debut at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.
Per TIFF’s synopsis, “Silvia works at a public home in New York City for adults struggling with mental health conditions. She leads a simple and structured life: her daughter, her job, her AA meetings. She meets Saul in the worst circumstances, after he has creepily followed her home from their high school reunion party and she finds him dripping wet and freezing outside her door the next morning. Better Call Saul‘s final season marks the conclusion of executive producer Melissa Bernstein’s 15-year journey that began with Breaking Bad‘s pilot shoot in 2007. The celebrated AMC drama about the rise and fall of Walter White (Bryan Cranston) paved the way for the Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman-led (Bob Odenkirk) prequel-sequel series Better Call Saul and the Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul)-centric sequel movie El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019).
Considering that Breaking Bad narrowly survived the 2007-08 WGA strike with perennial low ratings until a late series Netflix bump, Bernstein remains astonished that Vince Gilligan’s mayhem-filled show went on to spawn what could be the most well-crafted shared universe to date. “It just feels like lightning in a bottle that lasted a really long time,” says Bernstein. “We’ve all pinched ourselves into bruising.”

Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Bob Odenkirk is entering the “Better Call Saul” episode “Saul Gone” as his 2023 Emmy Award submission for Best Drama Actor. “Saul Gone” aired on August 15, 2022, and is the 13th and final episode of the AMC show’s sixth and final season.
In “Saul Gone,” Jimmy McGill (Odenkirk) faces the consequences of the conflicts caused by his three identities: the actions he made under his birth name of McGill, the federal crimes he committed as Saul Goodman, and the schemes he ran in Omaha as Gene Takavic. The episode also sees Jimmy and Kim Wexler (Emmy nominee Rhea Seehorn) coming face-to-face for the first time in six years. Three flashbacks investigate roads not travelled as Saul thinks about the person he has become and the people he lost along the way. Critics’ Conversation: Despite Heartening Inclusions, Emmy Voters Struggle to Broaden Their Horizons
Daniel Fienberg: The Television Academy has done it again! And I’m not sure I mean that as a compliment.
I’m happy to see two of my favorite comedies of the past year, Succession and The White Lotus, dominating the nominations. On the drama side.
And I’m glad to see Emmy voters finally recognized that my absolute favorite show of last year, Reservation Dogs, exists. Or exists enough to receive one nomination in the sound category.
And how nice that Emmy voters also noticed Dead Ringers. For cinematography. But somehow left Rachel Weisz out of the Lead Actress in a Limited Series category.
Once again, it was an Emmy nomination slate that suggests voters watch a half-dozen shows, which allows dozens more to slip through the cracks. Nowhere is that clearer than the supporting categories, where nearly every actor from The White Lotus got nominated (Nearly… sorry...

Better Call Saul‘s Bob Odenkirk found himself “giddy” and “very proud” on Wednesday morning, as his lauded Breaking Bad prequel landed its final set of seven Emmy nominations, including one for his lead turn, speaking with Deadline about what his character Slippin’ Jimmy McGill might be up to post-finale, his memorable recent guest appearance on FX’s The Bear, his new AMC show Lucky Hank and more.
Noting that it was co-star Rhea Seehorn’s nom alongside him that made the morning “complete,” not to mention recognition for the show’s writers, Odenkirk shared that as the time since Saul‘s finale stretches out, he sees the opportunity he had with the series as even “bigger” than he did at the beginning, “which is to say it seems like the role of a lifetime, for real.

Nominations for the 75th Emmy awards have arrived and as expected, HBO’s “Succession” led the pack with 27 nods, including 14 for acting, the same number as last year (when it broke the record for the most in the acting categories any in a single year). “The Last of Us” came in second with 24 nominations, including Pedro Pascal’s first ever, for lead actor in a drama series. “The White Lotus” (23) and “Ted Lasso” (21) rounded out to the top four.

Well, it won’t be long now before we’ll know the Primetime Emmy nominees. Wednesday morning is mere hours away. And naturally, being a Gold Derby editor in good standing, I have some thoughts on this particular subject. Of course, if you’re reading these words, no doubt you do, too. So I invite you to check out my picks below, compare them to your own, and then consider why I’m right or wrong. Your belief system may vary.
Fun for the whole family!
Let’s take it category by category, shall we? In order of nomination likelihood. And just to shake things up, let’s start off with drama series instead of comedy.

A version of this story about Bryan Cranston, “Your Honor” and “Better Call Saul” first ran in the Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The last time Bryan Cranston was nominated for an Emmy for lead actor in a drama series, it was 2014, for the final season of AMC’s “Breaking Bad,” in which he starred as high school chemistry teacher turned crystal meth drug lord Walter White. He won that year (as well as three previous times) and now he’s back in contention with Showtime’s “Your Honor,” another series that explores human beings’ darker impulses. He plays Michael Desiato, an upstanding judge who falls into corruption and crime to protect his son from the mob, only to watch him die in his arms.

“It was fascinating for me to be in that world, that I didn’t expect to,” admits Betsy Brandt about her shocking appearance in the “Better Call Saul” finale. For our recent webchat she continues, “To get to see my character later was such a gift to me. It was one of the few times I’ve felt satiated. I’ve sat with that and think about Marie a lot. It was incredible for me to get to do that.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
From 2008 to 2013, Brandt played Marie Schrader on each season of “Breaking Bad.” Marie was the sister-in-law of Walter White (Bryan Cranston), whose husband Hank (Dean Norris) was killed as a direct result of her in-law’s drug empire. On returning to the character she reflects, “I never could have imagined getting that kind of closure for that character. I think Marie is stronger than she thinks she is.

Editor’s note: Deadline’s It Starts on the Page features 10 standout drama series scripts in 2023 Emmy contention. It showcases the critical role writers’ work plays in a show’s success. All materials (the script and writers intro) were submitted before the WGA strike began on May 2.
The spinoff from Vince Gilligan’s Emmy-winning Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul wrapped its run on AMC by tying up all the loose threads that wove through the ambitious drama for six seasons and spanned characters that appeared in both series.
That feat culminated with Season 6’s 13th and final episode, “Saul Gone,” written and directed by series co-creator Peter Gould, who brought it all home by providing a platform that literally put Bob Odenkirk’s lead character — in essence a man made up separate entities in Jimmy McGill, lawyer/crook Saul Goodman and fugitive Gene Takavic — on trial for his numerous crimes and misdeeds.

Patinkin even spoofed his beloved role as Inigo Montoya in “The Princess Bride,” carrying a sign that read, “You killed residuals prepare to pay!” (The line of course being in reference to his famous delivery of, “You killed my father, prepare to die.”)

Mandy Patinkin was trending on Twitter for a viral video (below) of the Homeland actor on the writers strike picket line, yelling his support for writers.
The Emmy winner was outside Warner Bros. Discovery’s offices in New York and carrying a sign inspired by his beloved Princess Bride character, Inigo Montoya, that read: “You Killed Residuals Prepare to Pay.”
“Don’t be stupid!” Patinkin yells at an unseen person (presumably a studio executive, given the context). “Make sure you take care of people! You guys make millions and million of dollars! For gods sakes! Without the writers, we have nothing! They create the stories that make our hearts beat! Help out now!”

“I don’t think there’s really anything he can do to make up for the actions he’s taken,” declares “Better Call Saul” co-creator Peter Gould about Jimmy McGill. For our recent webchat he adds, “But he does become a better man. He does take responsibility for his actions. Which a lot of other character’s don’t ever do. That was something that was very important to us. But I don’t feel he redeemed himself. He did become a good enough person to share that cigarette with Kim Wexler. He did deserve that, and that’s pretty great.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Someone said: it's a thin line between love and hate. And as much as we love love, hate is a pure emotion that can be as destructive as love.
Hate must usually be checked; otherwise, it can become someone's downfall. But sometimes, it can be a driving force that helps someone better themselves.
Characters hate each other on TV all the time, and it's what makes for good drama and storyline.
We have compiled twenty characters who hated another character or each other so much that it had our hearts racing every time they interacted.
20. Ray Donovan vs. Mickey Donovan on Ray Donovan
Some people have no business bringing new life into this world, and if there was ever such a person, according to Ray, it was his dad, Mickey.
Mickey was the walking definition of a bad father. He was abusive, promiscuous, and a total deadbeat grifter.

This article contains spoilers for "Barry."
While developing "Better Call Saul," Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould first envisioned the show as a half-hour "case of the week" legal comedy. Each episode would be about Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) dealing with his latest client, before the client of his lifetime — Walter White (Bryan Cranston) — came along in "Breaking Bad." If you've seen "Better Call Saul," you know they didn't take long to ditch that idea. Instead, the show was an hour-long dramedy about former con man Jimmy McGill trying to make an honest living — even though he was destined to fail. Instead of a show laughing at Saul Goodman's antics, we learned that the persona is a personification of Jimmy's tragic inability to grow.
Gilligan, speaking to Rolling Stone about the show "Better Call Saul" became, said:
"'Breaking Bad' is about 25-percent humor, 75-percent drama, and maybe this will be the reverse of that.

Previously in “Welcome to Eden” Season 2, a lot of deaths took place. Astrid’s most dependable employee, Brenda, was assassinated. Additionally, Zoa’s link, Nico, and Saul got into a fight, which resulted in Nico’s passing. Joel killed Saul, but we later learned that Saul was the one who threatened Astrid with death and even attacked Erick. In the meantime, we learned what Astrid’s true motivation was for establishing the cult. Astrid and Erick were both interacting with alternative universes, and they discovered a “New Eden” in a separate galaxy where environmental issues like pollution and global warming hadn’t yet taken hold. Astrid’s ambition is to relocate to “New Eden” and bring her followers with her. She didn’t care whether or not her cult members, who were essentially captives unable to leave the island, wanted to settle somewhere else in the cosmos. Let’s see...

Previously, in “Welcome to Eden,” Episode 3, Nico learned that Saul had threatened Astrid with death. Saul was the one who’d even attacked Erick and stabbed him. Saul, however, had to kill Nico by stabbing a knife into his neck while he was on his way to hand himself in. After Nico vanished, Eden implemented a voting system, and it was agreed that senior staff would determine who would survive and who would die. Saul, meanwhile, was planning a follow-up assault on Astrid while revealing his identity as the assailant who stabbed Erick. Furthermore, Mayka assisted Charly and Africa in escaping the cell, yet, Africa struck Saul in the head to protect Astrid. Though Africa had a chance to survive as she saved Astrid’s life, Charly was able to get out of the cell in the interim. Let’s see what decision Astrid would take against Charly.

Previously, in episode 2 of “Welcome to Eden,” Nico conducted a search around Saul’s module and discovered a note from his mentor implying that Saul was the one who issued death threats to Astrid. Nico intended to turn him in to advance his position in Eden, but Saul didn’t let that happen. He stabbed Nico in the neck and fled, abandoning him to die. As Nico took his final breath, Zoa stayed by his side. Meanwhile, Charly and Africa were still in prison. Astrid was going to decide who to execute first, but Erick considered that Astrid would not be the one to decide anyone’s life or death in Eden, so a voting system among Eden’s top-ranking personnel would be implemented to make the appropriate decision.

Why Did Saul Intend To Kill Astrid?
The third episode opens with Zoa and Bel bringing Nico’s body to a precipice.

Here’s a not-so-fun fact that will ruin your day: “Better Call Saul” has never won an Emmy. The critically lauded spin-off of “Breaking Bad” has been nominated 46 times through five and a half seasons and never once walked away a winner. With its final six episodes eligible this year, the AMC series co-created by Peter Gould and Vince Gilligan has one last chance to alter this aspect of its otherwise unblemished legacy. History tells us it’s a long shot at best — voters have proven time and again they simply don’t care about the show, which tells the tragic story of how Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) became slippery lawyer Saul Goodman — but “Better Call Saul” also has a secret weapon it never had before: former Best Drama Actor Emmy winner Bryan Cranston.

Previously in Episode 1 of “Welcome To Eden” Season 2, we saw Africa being captured by Astrid after discovering the transmission room. Though Astrid planned to kill her later, Erick, who had recently recovered from his injury, wanted to protect Africa. He informed Africa of their interplanetary endeavor to discover a new Eden and relocate there. Africa didn’t buy it, but Erick appeared to be telling the truth. It could have been a fervent belief or the final truth that Astrid’s cult was working towards. However, Zoa and Gabi met in Eden and chose to keep their relationship a secret. Following Ulises’ death, level-two guards were instructed to identify the murderer, and Eva assisted them by claiming that Eloy had killed Ulises. Danae, one of the level-two security personnel, mercilessly tortured Eloy. Astrid gave the order to kill Eloy the next morning, and Alma was given the duty.

This post was first published August 15, 2022, after the finale of “Better Call Saul” Season 6, which is now streaming on Netflix.
Throughout the series finale of AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” our deeply flawed, often immoral and occasionally sympathetic protagonist keeps asking figures from his past what they’d do if they had a time machine. First, it’s Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks), who rues the day he first took a bribe and began down the path that led him to become an entirely different man. Then, it’s Walter White (Bryan Cranston), who points out that the real question behind the time machine thought experiment is regret.
Saul regrets actually hurting himself while pulling a slip-and-fall scam when he was 22. “So you were always like this?” Walter snarks at him. But we, the loyal “Better Call Saul “viewers, know better than that, don’t we? The show wasn’t about...
