As a seasoned Met Gala attendee who has made several trips up the iconic Met stairs, Nicole Kidman lived up to her elegant reputation by reviving a 1950s vintage gown for her return to the gala this year.
I love how she subtly interpreted this year’s theme, opting for a bespoke black-and-white Balenciaga gown instead of the more popular whimsical floral motif. Some, however, weren’t impressed by her ostensibly typical black-and-white look, which they assumed deviated from the evening’s “The Garden of Time” dress code.

Did Anna Wintour add more tables to this year’s Met Gala? Because the steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art felt especially crowded on Monday evening, May 6, teeming with Hollywood A-listers wearing a plethora of artful looks. And while not everyone leaned into the evening’s theme, “The Garden of Time,” for the most part the stars acquitted themselves well in looks that ranged from quiet elegance to over the top and outrageous.
Even with the nature-centric theme, the night surprisingly was highlighted by some stars in neutrals. Nicole Kidman offered a great backstory for her black and white Balenciaga gown, while Cardi B served up the night’s best drama in a Windowsen black gown that almost spanned the width of the museum steps. Flesh-toned gowns likewise were abundant, including Pamela Anderson in Oscar de la Renta and Lizzo in a custom floral-inspired corset gown by Paris-based designer Victor Weinsanto.

Nicole Kidman certainly turned back the clock in her Balenciaga look at the Met Gala.
Designed by creative director Demna Gvasalia, the Oscar-winning star stepped out in a 1950s-inspired white double silk bustier and flared skirt over frayed layers of black silk organza to mimic feathers. The original gown was inspired by the ruffled dresses worn by flamenco dancers, a nod to Balenciaga’s Spanish heritage.
“It was based on a dress in 1951 by Balenciaga at that time by Cristóbal,” Kidman told La La Anthony on the red carpet. “It was something that I saw in [a Richard] Avedon photo [of Dorian Leigh from Harper’s Bazaar]. I asked Demna if he was willing to reinterpret it. So he reinterpreted it in the vein of the sleeping beauties and the gowns, bringing them back to life. So I consider this to be a ‘Sleeping Beauty’ brought back to life. It’s an honor...

It’s been a bustling, seemingly nonstop awards season, but Hollywood’s stars and stylists truly did save the best for last.
That’s the verdict from the red carpet at Oscars 2024, which served up a plethora of looks that were often dramatic, sometimes over-the-top and grand, and occasionally just simply dazzling. Among the night’s biggest fashion surprises: Margot Robbie eschewed her now-trademark pink in favor of a beautifully sculpted gown in deep brown by Versace — and it was America Ferrera who embraced Barbie’s signature color in a stunning pink chainmail dress, also by Versace.
Indeed, Robbie turned out to be prescient with her choice of color, as noir-hued gowns ruled the 2024 Oscars red carpet. Some were sleek and simple, like the Dolce & Gabbana gown worn by Jamie Lee Curtis, or they brought the drama, with Sandra Hüller’s Schiaparelli and Carey Mulligan’s ivory-accented black mermaid...

It was a perfect Hollywood afternoon. There was sun, a slight breeze, and some of the most famous faces on the planet. And for Demna Gvasalia, there was fear.
The Balenciaga creative director has proven himself one of the most adept and blunt bottlers of our zeitgeist for the past decade, and his artistic interpretations are among the most polarizing and debated in fashion. It’s perhaps understandable then that after the brand’s first Los Angeles show in its 105-year history, he was “very afraid” to talk to the locals.

On Saturday, Dec. 2, the luxury Parisian fashion brand Balenciaga, helmed by artistic director Demna since 2015, dropped down in L.A. to show its fall 2024 men’s and women’s collections on a stretch of palm tree-lined Windsor Boulevard near 5th Street in Los Angeles’ Windsor Square neighborhood, with the Hollywood sign as a backdrop. Helicopters and drones buzzed in the air and locals took in the entertainment from their balconies in the residential neighborhood-turned-runway for a day.
Among the starry crowd were newly announced brand ambassador Nicole Kidman, Salma Hayek Pinault (arriving with husband François-Henri Pinault, chairman and CEO of luxury fashion group Kering, which owns Balenciaga), Cole Sprouse (donning the brand’s viral $925 towel skirt), Eva Longoria, Tracee Ellis Ross, Kim Kardashian with sister Kendall Jenner, Joey King, Lisa Rinna with daughters Amelia Gray and Delilah Belle Hamlin, Lil Wayne, Storm Reid, Tinashe, Brooklyn Beckham with wife Nicola Peltz,...

The stars hit the streets of Los Angeles Saturday afternoon for Balenciaga’s much-anticipated fashion show.
Kim Kardashian arrived carrying an Erewhon shopping bag, the latest collaboration between the luxury fashion house and the upscale grocery store.
“This is my purse for the day,” Kardashian told me, explaining that Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia asked her to carry it. “There are flowers in it. I’m going to give them to Demna later.”
One onlooker whispered, “I heard the bags are $1,000.”
Cardi B was a surprise model in the show. Wearing an oversized blue coat, Cardi later joined Teyana Taylor to pose for photographers in the front row.
Another celeb model was 1980s movie icon Brigitte Nielsen.
The show took place on a blocked-off residential street in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Rumor has it that residents on the block were paid $1,000 per house for the inconvenience.

Balenciaga is back in the news.
On the heels of a new report from New York Times fashion writer Vanessa Friedman — a piece that called it “make or break time” for the luxury brand ahead of a March 5 show in Paris, one she billed as “the single most fraught show of the season” or any season following a “spectacular fall from grace” late last year — Vogue published the first interview Balenciaga’s creative director Demna has done since the controversy exploded.
In it, he once again apologizes for two ad campaigns that were widely condemned for using props like lawsuit papers related to a child pornography case and the casting of children holding teddy bear handbags that looked to be bondage-inspired (Demna claims the designs were meant to reference “punk and DIY culture”), among other questionable items. He also details the house’s new protocols and explains how the situation...

After days of silence following the release of Balenciaga’s latest ad campaigns, which came under fire for featuring children as subjects holding teddy bear handbags in Bdsm-inspired gear and including prop documents revealing a lawsuit related to child pornography, Demna, the brand’s creative director, has personally apologized for the images.
In a statement posted on his personal Instagram account on Friday, Dec. 2, the 41-year-old fashion designer said: “I want to personally apologize for the wrong artistic choice of concept for the gifting campaign with the kids and I take my responsibility. It was inappropriate to have kids promote objects that had nothing to do with them. As much as I would sometimes like to provoke a thought through my work, I would Never have an intention to do that with such an awful subject as child abuse that I condemn. Period.

One of Kanye West’s most notable brand partnerships in the fashion world has been terminated. Balenciaga has reportedly severed ties with the rapper, who’s made several controversial public remarks in recent weeks, including repeated anti-Semitic attacks.
The French fashion house’s parent company, Kering, revealed that they cut ties with West in a statement following the publication of their third-quarter results.
“Balenciaga has no longer any relationship nor any plans for future projects related to this artist,” Kering reportedly told Women’s Wear Daily, in response to a query from the publication. Kering did not elaborate further.

Kanye West might have plans as ambitious as running for president.
In the midst of all the chaos from West’s past month, his team filed a slew of trademark applications that would allow West to create his own mini-community — or as West intends to call it, the “Yecosystem.”
West’s plan for his own small “universe” has been in the works for years, two Yeezy sources confirm to Rolling Stone. The sources describe it as a self-sustained enterprise that would have its own branded homes, retail stores that sell Yecosystem-branded food items and beverages.
