When putting together his newest documentary, “Assassins,” Ryan White wanted to pose a simple question: Were the women who assassinated Kim Jong-nam in 2017 trained assassins, or did they really do it as part of a reality TV show?
North Korean royal family member Kim Jong-nam, Kim Jong-un’s half brother, was publicly murdered at Kuala Lumpur International Airport when two women attacked him with Vx nerve agent. When the two women were arrested, they claimed they believed they were on some sort of a reality TV program or prank show.
“That was kind of our entry point: this bizarre story of two female political assassins and we followed their rial for the last two years,” White told TheWrap’s Brian Welk. “They were on death row in Malaysia, they pleaded not guilty saying they thought they were on a reality show when they committed the assassination. So our documentary interrogates...

Magnolia Pictures has bought the documentary “Assassins,” which explores the 2017 assassination of Kim Jong-nam, half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.
Ryan White directed “Assassins,” which premiered on Jan. 28 at the Sundance Film Festival. Magnolia plans to release the film later this year.
Kim Jong-nam was murdered in the departures hall of Malaysia’s international airport in broad daylight, filmed entirely by security cameras. Footage showed two young women approaching Jong-nam from behind, covering his eyes with their hands, and pressing lethal nerve gas into his eyes. He stumbled away and was dead within an hour.
The two women who killed Jong-nam claimed they had simply been hired to pull a video prank and had no idea what they were really doing. An Indonesian woman, Siti Aisyah, and a Vietnamese woman, Doan Thi Huong, were charged with murder. Siti Aisyah was freed last year after the charge against her was dropped.

Magnolia Pictures has acquired worldwide rights to Assassins, the latest feature documentary from Ask Dr. Ruth filmmaker Ryan White. The film just had its world premiere in the Sundance Film Festival’s Documentary Premieres lineup. A 2020 release is planned.
Part true crime and global spy thriller, the documentary investigates the 2017 assassination of Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, in a Malaysian airport. The brazen attack was caught on camera, with two young women — Siti Aishah from Indonesia, and Doan Thi Huong from Vietnam — shown attacking Kim with a Vx nerve agent while he walked through the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
After their arrests, the girls say they believed they were part of a prank show. South Korea said the murder was an assassination by the North Korean government. Smith, who won a Sundance award in 2014 for The Case Against 8, asks whether the women were ruthless assassins or political pawns.

Trio of deals come as festival nears close.
As the final weekend approached in Park City, Hulu was understood to be closing its second deal of Sundance in an $8m transaction for worldwide rights to Justin Simien’s Bad Hair.
According to sources, Hulu had to convince the filmmaker that his follow-up to Dear White People would get some theatrical play and it is understood the streamer has committed to doing so. Hulu has not distributed theatrically by itself, although it does partner with Neon on films, as it will on record Sundance buy Palm Springs.
