There is something so delicious about biting into a comedy from the Tina Fey/Robert Carlock universe. “30 Rock,” of course, was the gold standard — and a show I find myself still quoting to this day. Team the Fey camp with Meredith Scardino, who cut her teeth on “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report,” and you get “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” another landmark show that helped Netflix define its smart comedy brand early in that streamer’s life.
Scardino was also part of the Fey/Carlock collab that gave us NBC’s “Mr. Mayor,” and I am still a bit angry that not enough people tuned into that sharp series. Ted Danson and Holly Hunter led a workplace comedy that delightfully skewered Los Angeles while setting up some amazing character dynamics.
But that’s not what this column is about. Yes, the short life of “Mr. Mayor” still stings. Instead,...

In this edition of THR Frontrunners, Girls5Eva creator and showrunner Meredith Scardino and stars Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sara Bareilles, Busy Phillips and Paula Pell joined The Hollywood Reporter‘s Tyler Coates for a conversation about the third season of the Netflix comedy series at a live event hosted by the San Vincente Bungalows in Los Angeles.
“It was heavenly,” said Pell about the streamer picking up the series — the first two seasons of which aired on Peacock — for its third season. “It’s like art imitating life: Our characters have second chances.”
Scardino added that a lot of the comedy, which follows the exploits of a turn-of-the-millennium girl group who are thrust back into the spotlight decades later when a Gen-z rapper samples their pop hit, is sparked from the four stars’ incredible bond both on- and off-camera. “They have a joke that I have weekly meetings with their therapists,...

Somehow it’s gone unreported until now, but for several days in 2001, then-SNL writer Paula Pell was believed to be a victim of anthrax poisoning after a letter containing the lethal substance was sent to 30 Rock.
In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, letters containing anthrax were sent to a number of politicians and journalists, including NBC’s Tom Brokaw. As was publicly reported at the time, Brokaw’s assistant was exposed to the substance and hospitalized after she tested positive for anthrax poisoning. A second NBC employee, a desk assistant for NBC News who opened the letter, also fell ill.
What we didn’t know until now is that several weeks later, Paula Pell was also sent to the hospital with suspected anthrax poisoning. It’s a pretty remarkable footnote to a story that was front-page news at the time, but for Pell it’s most notable for the...

“Girls5eva” deserves to be heard. Yes, the laugh-out-loud comedy, from the minds of Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, creator Meredith Scardino and others, is funny. The music industry is wickedly skewered. The music, led by Jeff Richmond, is clever and catchy.
But really, the heart of the show comes from its stars — Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Paula Pell — and the characters they play. These are women of a certain age who are rediscovering their voices and finally taking on their dreams, after years of settling for something less.
Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast recently spoke to Philipps and Pell about Season 3 of “Girls5eva,” what the show has meant to them and the special message that it resonates between the laughs. Listen below!
In “Girls5eva,” Bareilles is Dawn, who gave up dreams of fame to raise her family. Goldsberry’s character, Wickie, is the diva whose attempt at...

There are thousands of characters in Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece, but Nami stands out as a fan favorite. As the navigator for Luffy’s crew, she even ranked top 3 among the most popular anime characters.
However, for years, fans have criticized Nami’s outfits as being too revealing, seeing them as nothing more than fanservice. Nami’s choice of clothing is actually a planned part of how she works.
Nami in One Piece
As the navigator, Nami uses her unique angle and position to her advantage. She doesn’t let it become an obstacle in dangerous situations.
Eiichiro Oda Responded to Fans’ Curiosity with Humor and Caution
Nami isn’t meant to be one of the Straw Hats’ main fighters like Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji. Her role as the navigator is quite different from theirs.

Band on the run! After two seasons on Peacock, the recently reunited (and mercifully fictional) ’90s girl group known as Girls5Eva is heading out on the road…and staking out a new home on Netflix. “It’s a dream come true,” says Grammy winner Sara Bareilles, who continues to simply shine as logical, slightly uptight crooner Dawn opposite Renée Elise Goldsberry‘s fame-hungry Wickie, Paula Pell‘s earthy lesbian Gloria, and Busy Philipps‘ flaky Summer. “When we [heard] we were moving to Netflix and the first seasons were coming as well, there was so much relief because we all love making this show so much.” When the comedy returns for a stellar six-episode run, the ladies are out on the least-glam tour ever in support of their new album, Returnity. “Janky, low-end…yeah, analog,” offers the chronically hilarious Pell of their array of stops. Along the way, they manage to...

Girls5eva has been picked up by Netflix for season three, in a move that its stars and creator are viewing as a chance to find new audiences and continue telling the story of the revived pop group.
“It’s a relief. I’m so grateful,” said Sara Bareilles, one of the stars of the musical comedy, “We had so much fun making the season and getting to move platforms and broaden our audience, getting a chance to continue the story of these women. When we left it at season two, we were all sort of living in the question of ‘Are we going to get to be with them again?’ and we just had such a beautiful experience making the show.”

Back in May 2021, singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles returned to the Hollywood Bowl to promote a new album. At one point, she invited her “Girls5eva” co-stars — Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell and Busy Philipps — to join her onstage. The quartet performed the song “4 Stars” from the comedy, marking the first and only time they’ve sung together in public.
But here’s the rub: This was the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, and all 17,500 seats around the Hollywood Bowl were empty. Bareilles’ concert was being livestreamed, and the cast had no idea what the fans at home felt about their performance.
Which sounds a lot like the fate of “Girls5eva” itself. The comedy was one of the first original series on Peacock, but on a nascent streamer, the audiences weren’t huge. Critics and a small cadre of fans embraced the Tina Fey-produced comedy, but it never caught on with a broader viewership.

In a move that will give hope to fans of canceled shows everywhere, Netflix picked up the discarded Peacock series Girls5Eva for a third season. The series, which premiered in 2021, stars Sara Bareilles, Paula Pell, Busy Philipps, and Renée Elise Goldsberry as former teen pop stars who now want to get the band back together. Created by Meredith Scardino (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt; Great News), the series was one of the flat-out funniest shows on TV through its first two seasons, harnessing the musical-comedic gifts of Goldsberry, finally giving Pell a platform upon which to shine, and discovering that Bareilles is a skillful comedian in addition to being a devastatingly good singer-songwriter.

It’s been just over a year since “Girls5Eva” announced its third season pickup at Netflix after being canceled at Peacock. And star Sara Bareilles said they’re hoping for the show to score an “early” 2024 debut at its new streaming home.
“Postproduction is well underway,” she told TheWrap Tuesday, confirming reports from costar Paula Pell that Season 3 had completed filming ahead of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes this summer.
“I’m going in for my Adr sessions in the next couple weeks, and I know that our creatives are locking the edits and they’re working on sound mix and all that stuff,” Bareilles continued. “All of that had stopped, so there was a pretty deep interruption of that flow. So we’re hoping for early next year, but we don’t have an actual date yet.”

Netflix is diving into the comedy scene with its latest acquisition, ‘The Fifth Wheel,’ a film that will feature reality TV icon and entrepreneur Kim Kardashian in a starring role. This project marks a significant shift for Kardashian, known predominantly for her reality show fame, as she steps into a more diverse acting role.
In ‘The Fifth Wheel,’ Kardashian is set to play the central character, surrounded by an all-female ensemble cast. The specifics about the film’s plot are currently under wraps, but the title hints at a comedic take on being the odd one out in different situations.
The comedy film is co-written by Paula Pell, an established name in the comedy world and a former writer for ‘Saturday Night Live.’ Pell’s comedic flair is well-known, having penned the laugh-out-loud movie ‘Sisters.’ She has also recently starred in the series ‘Girls5eva,’ where her comedic talents shine through.

Striking film and television writers got a signal boost on Thursday from U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (d-ny), who spoke at a rally outside the East Coast offices of Paramount Global in the busy heart of Manhattan’s Times Square.

Warning: contains major spoilers for Luther Series 1-5
Much like its grizzled, rule-breaking protagonist, Luther has never been one to play it safe. Over its five series so far, the Idris Elba-fronted crime drama has had more than its fair share of shocking moments – be they unexpected plot twists, spine-chilling set-pieces or major character deaths.
So, ahead of new movie Luther: The Fallen Sun – which will no doubt boast a few shocks of its own – we take a look back at the iconic, Wtf moments that had Luther fans yelling at their tellies or hiding behind their sofas.
Obviously, spoilers abound, so if you’re yet to delve into Luther’s grimy underworld, best to come back here when you’re done. Two pieces of advice, though: don’t watch it right before you go to bed, and don’t grow too attached to anyone…

Cancel culture was on trial, along with other social ills.
Law & Order Season 22 Episode 5 told a tale in which a professor's negative comment about gay people led to blackmail, fear of being 'canceled,' and murder.
It was an interesting, fresh take on several tropes and made its point without being overly heavy-handed.
This story could easily have gone down a predictable path.
Since we had a college student rumored to have had an affair with a professor, Law & Order could have followed many other stories and had that be the motive for murder.

The band has a new home: Girls5eva is moving to Netflix from rival streamer Peacock for its third season.
The move is a shock as it’s one of the first original series to move between rival streaming services but Deadline hears that the Tina Fey-produced series was actually canceled at Peacock before Netflix swooped in to save it.
Although the comedy series, which stars Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Paula Pell, has been well received critically and was arguably the closest thing to an awards contender that the streamer had, Girls5eva wasn’t one of its most-watched shows and didn’t bring in the same audiences that the likes of dramas Bel Air and Dr. Death did.
We hear that the streamer was forced to make the tough decision to prioritize other shows and cancel it after its second season finished in June.

Six years after first partnering with Robert Carlock and Tina Fey to write for and eventually co-produce Netflix’s “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” Meredith Scardino recruited the duo to co-produce her own show, “Girls5eva,” the second season finale of which aired earlier this month on Peacock. The musical comedy series about early 2000s girl group members reuniting in middle age stars Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell and Busy Philipps, all of whom recently joined Scardino for a 2022 Emmys FYC panel, moderated by Michael Schneider from Variety. At this point in her career, Scardino has comfortably aligned herself with the Carlock-Fey writing style of stuffing as many zingers as she can into her scripts. Here, she spoke about how “satire has always been… the kind of way that [she feels] comfortable storytelling” and how her experience as an Emmy-winning writer for “The Colbert Report” fostered that mindset.

When Paula Pell learned she had to get another knee replacement surgery last summer, she told “Girls5eva” creator Meredith Scardino that she hoped it wouldn’t affect Season 2 too much. It did — but in the best way. “They were like, ‘Oh, my God! That is the most Gloria storyline ever!’” Pells tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “They were like, ‘Thank you very much. Bio” isn’t content with a passing grade; it wants to excel, and so it does in a third season bursting with creativity, charm, and well-realized ambition.
For those who fell behind (or never started), both previous seasons of “A.P. Bio” are available on Peacock,...
