Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future. This week, we look back on a monumental year, for better or worse.
Ask enough women in Hollywood about being a woman in Hollywood, and eventually a theme emerges: conversation is great, and the acknowledgement of the skewed numbers and lack of equality is essential. It’s a discussion that needs to happen, but won’t it be great when we can stop just talking and put words into action?
It’s a two-pronged dream — that conversation will move past chatter and produce real results, and that those results will create a world where inequality becomes a thing of the past.
But talking has a way of being one-sided and, as it turns out, there needed to be one more step in between the chatter and actually moving things forward. That finally happened in 2017, the year people stopped talking,...

The DC Extended Universe just can’t catch a break. Warner Bros.’ tentpole franchise was hoping to continue the critical and commercial success of “Wonder Women” with “Justice League,” but critical reviews and box office returns have been anything but generous. The superhero epic sports a 41% on Rotten Tomatoes and didn’t even cross the $100 million mark in its first weekend in theaters.

The lackluster opening for “Justice League” doesn’t just make it the weakest debut for a superhero film in 2017 (which is shocking considering it brings three popular superheroes together and introduces three popular new ones), but it also sets up Warner Bros. for a major financial loss. According to Forbes, the studio could lose up to $100 million on “Justice League.” The company reports that Warner Bros. will lose $50 million at the very least,...

I’d imagine every one of us, despite our individual life situations, however privileged or difficult they may be, wouldn’t have too much trouble coming up with a pretty long list of people and circumstances for which to be grateful, during the upcoming week traditionally reserved for the expression of thanks as well as throughout the entirety of the year.
Even in our brave new world, where gratitude and humility and generosity of spirit often seem to be in short supply, at the mercy of greed, abuse of power, disregard for the rule of law, and megalomaniac self-interest cynically masquerading as an aggressive strain of nationalist, populist passion, there are good, everyday reasons to look around and take stock of blessings in one’s immediate surroundings.

Don’t call it a torch-passing, but a torch-sharing. At last night’s Glamour Women of the Year Awards, held at Brooklyn’s historic Kings Theatre, the lauded magazine handed out its annual awards to the women who have made the biggest mark on 2017 in all areas, from politics to culture, sports to journalism. Honoree “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins was hailed for her work on the smash hit superheroine film, and original Wonder Woman Lynda Carter was on hand to introduce a gamechanger who she’s very happy to also call her friend. Can’t we all be Wonder Women together?
“She got the essence of Wonder Woman because it lives inside her,” Carter said. “She took the challenge of this miracle of an idea and a ’70s iconic TV show and she made the ‘she’ become the ‘we’ on the big screen all over the world.”

‘Justice League’ Offers a Sexualized Vision of Amazon Warriors That ‘Wonder Woman’ Fans Already Hate
When Zack Snyder’s “Justice League” arrives in theaters later this week, it will deliver on a long-held DC promise to bring together their mightiest heroes for a world-saving adventure that will only further coalesce the DC Extended Universe. Building off the tremendous success of the Dceu’s other big 2017 feature, Patty Jenkins’ box office juggernaut “Wonder Woman,” the film will further expand the series that the Gal Godot-starring feature helped push to new heights, both in terms of box office bucks and critical appraisal. It’s a post-“Wonder Woman” world, and one that “Justice League” has plenty to live up to.
Snyder’s film will also include some other beloved characters from “Wonder Woman”: Diana’s Amazon family, a badass matriarchal society literally designed (by Zeus, naturally) to be Earth’s most fearsome warriors, though they may look significantly different than they did in Jenkins’ film. But...

“Justice League” may not be a new superhero classic like “Wonder Woman,” but it’s certainly not an epic disaster like “Batman v Superman” or “Suicide Squad.” The social media embargo for the latest superhero blockbuster in the Dceu has broken, bringing with it a flood of first reactions from movie critics that all agree “Justice League” is a flawed movie that is still fun and way better than expected.

Writer-director Angela Robinson's film Professor Marston & the Wonder Women tells the story of the relationship between Wonder Woman creator William Moulton Marston, his wife Elizabeth Holloway Marston and grad student Olive Byrne. It's been well established that William had an extramarital relationship with Byrne, but as Robinson got into researching the story, she found evidence that all three had a relationship. While a number of Wonder Woman scholars have also agreed with this point, the Marston's granddaughter Christie Marston has publicly disputed the idea that Elizabeth Marston and Byrne had a romantic relationship (you can read her thoughts <a...

Chicago – For a film that has free love, lie detection, bondage, the origin of a great comic superhero and 3-way carnality, “Professor Marston & the Wonder Women” still comes out rather flat… quite a achievement. Wonder Woman is the comic hero, and this is the rest of her story.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
The film is sincere in its effort to explain one of the more unusual creators of an enduring comic book character, one who applied his lifestyle to the characteristics of Wonder Woman. William Moulton Marston was a man who at his core wanted to create a hero of peace and love, with the additional traits of her built in as a result of his own careful research. The performances are good and worth noting, but the story – written and directed by Angela Robinson – gets stuck in the man-ahead-of-his-time rut, with the forces of censorship bringing the Wonder of the Woman down faster than any villain.

Sorry, all you dudes who may have been expecting something salacious and debauched from a movie about the guy who created Wonder Woman for DC Comics. Cuz you’ve heard that he was into bondage and somehow managed to convince his wife to bring another woman into their lives and their bed: woo-hoo, threesome! But Professor Marston & the Wonder Women isn’t perverted, and it’s not pornographic, not even of the softest-core type. And this ain’t Fifty Shades of Grey, either. Thank Aphrodite. This weekend, Wonder Woman is back in the spotlight thanks to Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, a new film that traces the surprising origins of the beloved character.
The true-life tale behind the Amazon warrior’s controversial creator has remained shrouded in mystery for decades.
William Moulton Marston, who published his first Wonder Woman strip in 1941, led a double life not unlike the superheroes he wrote about. Working to uncover his secret identity like a real-life Lois Lane, New Yorker writer Jill Lepore pieced together the complicated life of the scholar, writer and inventor in 2014 with her book, The Secret History of Wonder Woman.

“Wonder Woman” might be the year’s most outwardly feminist blockbuster, but another of this year’s most outwardly feminist biopic chronicles her creation. Kinky and conventional in equal measure, “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” follows the unlikely (and mostly true) creation of Wonder Woman, born out of both forward-thinking theory and a polyamorous relationship that endured for decades. Robinson’s film follows Professor William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans), his wife Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall), and their one-time student and eventual lover Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote) as they try to navigate a complex three-way relationship while also dealing with intense public scrutiny.
Cleverly packaged as a straightforward drama about personal desires and professional accomplishments, “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” is a hugely satisfying alternative to often cheap excuses for feminist movies in Hollywood. Wonder Woman, it seems, has always been a symbol of progress. She was created by William Moulton Marston, a forward-thinking psychology professor, to help usher in a new era of female empowerment. Seventy-five years later, moviegoers cheered and wept this summer while watching Gal Gadot’s Diana of Themyscira in a superheroine movie that felt long overdue. But Wonder Woman’s modernity has nothing on her creators': a trio of romantic and sexual rebels who embraced queerness, kink, and polyamory decades before even San Francisco did. “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” celebrates the bravery and creativity of Diana Prince’s mastermind.

Behind the scenes of Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, a drama that tells the remarkable true story behind the creation of a groundbreaking superhero
Last year, as the Us presidential election approached, the cast and crew of Professor Marston and the Wonder Women were finishing their shoot in suburban Massachusetts, thinking that William Marston’s prescription for a better world was finally coming true. Marston, a psychologist who invented a forerunner of the modern polygraph, is best remembered for giving birth to Wonder Woman, a comic he created to show that if men could step back and let women run the world, we’d have peace for our time.
Well, that didn’t happen.

Sam Smith joined Gadot as the musical guest on the late night comedy variety show, which broke from format in it's cold open with an emotional message and performance by Jason Aldean in light of last Sunday's tragic shooting in Las Vegas.
Meanwhile, Gadot's Wonder Woman is inspiring more than just Jones. Watch the video...
TheWonder Woman star was interrupted during her opening Saturday Night Live monologue by castmember Leslie Jones, who hilariously went toe-to-toe with Gadot to show off her "street performer Wonder Woman" impression.
"I have a lasso that makes people tell you the truth," Gadot said of her Wonder Woman character, to which Jones replied, "And b**ch, I got vodka."
Watch Gadot's entire monologue below.

Luke Evans is dashing and well, hot, in the new biopic .Professor Marston and the Wonder Women.. He plays the title role, the college educator and inventor of the lie detector test who eventually created Wonder Woman. The film maps the creation of our favorite superhero, Wonder Woman! I sat down with the actor at the recently concluded Toronto International Film Festival for this one-on-one interview about the making of the movie.
Here.s the film.s official synopsis:
In a superhero origin tale unlike any other, the film is the incredible true story of what inspired Harvard psychologist Dr. William Moulton Marston to create the iconic Wonder Woman character in the 1940's. While Marston's feminist superhero was criticized by censors for her 'sexual perversity', he was keeping a secret that could have destroyed him. Marston's muses for the Wonder Woman character were his wife Elizabeth Marston and their lover Olive Byrne,...

Bella Heathcote (.Fifty Shades Darker,. .Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,. .The Neon Demon.) stars as Olive Byrne in .Professor Marston and the Wonder Women.. She.s a seemingly naïve college student who falls for the charms of Professor Marston (Luke Evans) and his wife Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall). The film tells how Wonder Woman, our favorite superhero, was created. Take a look at my fun interview with Heathcote for .Professor Marston and the Wonder Women..

Angela Robinson (.D.E.B.S.,. .The L Word,. .True Blood.) wrote and created a beautiful movie that celebrates the intrinsic nature of Wonder Woman. I sat down with Robinson at Tiff for this one-on-one interview about the making of .Professor Marston and the Wonder Women..

What if I were to tell you that the creator of Wonder Woman was a psychologist, the inventor of the lie detector, was in an open relationship with two women, and was a Bdsm enthusiast. Now, what if I told you that the biopic about the man who transformed the comic book industry contained none of the adventurousness, intrigue, or daring of his lifestyle? That deflating sense of disappointment is one you’ll become familiar with watching “Professor Marston And The Wonder Women,” which takes an uninspiring, conventional approach to a fascinating, unconventional story.

The year’s other big “Wonder Woman” movie includes plenty that would never make the cut in not just a studio-issued superhero blockbuster, but the vast majority of paint-by-number biopics, including: two long-form sequences involving a threesome, a secret venture to a clandestine sex toy-selling lingerie shop, a lie detector machine used as a form of foreplay, ropes, ropes, and more ropes, and a unshakable belief in the true power and reach of feminism. Angela Robinson’s fact-based film follows the eyebrow-raising personal life of Dr. William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans) and the two great loves of his life, his wife Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall) and their shared partner Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote), and how its unconventional bent led to the creation of Wonder Woman.
For as subversive as her subject matter is, Robinson couches her film in familiar trappings — the film uses a wraparound narrative device that connects past and present,...

I'm actually really looking forward to Profession Marston And The Wonder Women. I'm always fascinated by the creation of things in general, and especially when it comes iconic characters. This is especially true of Wonder Woman, who is not only a seminal feminist icon, but also had an interesting backstory (the titular professor, his wife, and their lover, creating the character and implementing aspects of Bdsm into the... At this year’s Telluride Film Festival, the “Wonder Woman” effect continues to send ripples throughout the industry. Case in point: Saturday’s hugely attended “Wonder Women” panel, moderated by director Peter Sellars and boasting a panel that included actress and filmmaker Angelina Jolie, lauded chef and restaurateur Alice Waters, tennis champ Billie Jean King (the subject of the Telluride premiere “Battle of the Sexes”), and actress and filmmaker Natalie Portman.
Jolie was at the annual Colorado film festival to bow her latest directorial effort, “First They Killed My Father,” which debuted the night before the panel. It will be available on Netflix later this month, after screening at Tiff next week.

Sneak Peek more from director Angela Robinson's feature, "Professor Marston & The Wonder Women", focusing on "Wonder Woman" creator 'Dr. William Moulton Marston' and the two live-in women that defined the sado-masochistic bondage, that influenced the early adventures of DC Comics' super-powered 'Amazonian' warrior:
"Wonder Woman' was created in the 1940's by Harvard-trained psychologist Dr. William Moulton Marston, writing under the byline 'Charles Moulton'.
Among Marston's many world views was that civilization was reverting into a 'matriarchy'...
...and that females would ultimately use innate powers of 'sexual enslavement' to achieve dominance over men.
These theories secured Marston the position of 'consulting psychologist' to womens' magazine 'Family Circle'...
...and in an interview published October 25, 1940, he touted the positive aspects of the booming war-time comic book industry.
His comments were well received by publisher M. C. Gaines of "All American Comics"...
