One of the highlights of this year’s Halloween celebration from Disney+ is the return of Marvel Studios’ special Werewolf by Night, which claws its way back into our lives in Full Color.
The Disney+ Halloween special was unleashed last year in black & white, giving it a classic horror throwback feel. This will be the first time you’ll be able to watch the special in color.
Werewolf by Night in Color premieres Friday, October 20, only on Disney+.
Now presented in vibrant color, Marvel Studios’ Werewolf by Night in Color takes place on a dark and somber night as a secret cabal of monster hunters emerge from the shadows and gather at the foreboding Bloodstone Temple following the death of their leader.

Last year, Marvel and Disney+ released the very cool creature feature Halloween special Werewolf by Night (you can read our 8/10 review Here), which was presented in black & white as a throwback to the Universal Monsters classics. They don’t have a new Halloween special for us this year, but they will be celebrating the holiday by releasing a colorized presentation of Werewolf by Night – appropriately called Werewolf by Night: In Color. This version of the special is set to begin streaming on Disney+ on October 20th, and one week out from that premiere date a trailer has arrived online to give a preview of what Werewolf by Night looks like in color. According to the promo, color makes it all more terrifying and more gruesome.

While there are no guarantees when it comes to predicting what audiences will show up for in theaters, horror and superheroes sit comfortably at the top of the reliable list. Transitionary phases in both MCU and Dceu resulted in more unpredictability than usual for superhero fare at the box office here in 2022. And though superhero movies have occasionally dabbled in horror over the years, 2022 undoubtedly saw them embrace the genre more than ever.
Before The Batman was released in March, director Matt Reeves described his take on the Caped Crusader as “almost a horror movie.” The suspenseful, unnerving opening sequence confirmed it. The Batman opens on Halloween, introducing this iteration of the Riddler (Paul Dano) as an eerie killer as he stalks and then murders the Gotham City mayor in his own home. It established a somber, gritty tone more akin to Se7en than your conventional superhero movie.

Last month, Marvel and Disney+ released the very cool creature feature Halloween special Werewolf by Night (you can read our 8/10 review Here). So far, there hasn’t been any word about when the characters introduced in that special – titular werewolf Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal), monster hunter’s daughter Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly), and swamp monster Man-Thing – will be returning in any future movies, specials, or series. But during an interview with The Wrap, Donnelly was enthusiastic about the idea of returning for a follow-up.
Donnelly said, “The thing that I love about this particular story for Elsa is that we get such a sense that we’re only at the beginning of something for her; she’s not introduced as the character that we know from the comics. It’s her pre-that or maybe she has been that and something has happened — we don’t know. And so it...

Laura Donnelly grew up in Belfast, but there was one thing that set her family apart from most people they knew. "Quite unusually for growing up in Belfast in the '80s, my family was really into Halloween," she tells Popsugar. "And we always had very big Halloween parties and still do to this day - it's kind of the biggest festival in my household."
Donnelly's Auntie Paula was the official party planner, and Donnelly credits her with giving her a "big love" of Halloween. Her sister Helen was also a major horror fan, and Donnelly would watch with her. "Of course, as little sisters do, you just latch onto whatever your big sister likes," she jokes. "And she watched all the Hammer horrors and all the Universal Monster movies and all of that stuff. And I got really, really into them."

On a dark and sombre night, a secret cabal of monster hunters emerge from the shadows and gather at the Bloodstone Temple following the death of their leader; the attendees are thrust into a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic.
When I was much younger (probably from the time I was eight years old up until the time I was about sixteen), I thought every single thing the Marvel Cinematic Universe did was the best. I was always the one saying that they were constantly outdoing themselves with each new release. But… I was wrong. The MCU these days is just not the same as it used to be, and even some of their older projects have me questioning some of their quality. It seems as though,...

Actress Laura Donnelly was well and truly prepared for her first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing Elsa Bloodstone in the new Marvel “Special Presentation,” Werewolf by Night.
“I had done the whole thing,” she says proudly. “Before I met with Michael [Giacchino, director] for this project, I had watched most of the MCU projects. Then obviously after I got the part, I went and watched all the ones I’d missed. I’ve always been a big fan.”
But Donnelly’s fandom doesn’t end there: she’s also deeply into the genre that Werewolf by Night is steeped in. “I’ve always been a big fan of old horror movies,” she adds. “I really grew up on the Universal monster movies, and Hammer horror was a big thing in my house. Review: Billed as a special presentation, Marvel Studios’ Werewolf by Night is in fact a standalone story that is too short to be a feature film and not long enough to be a series. Instead, it is about the length of a single episode of television but packs enough material to serve as the template for Marvel Studios to pump out any number of stories that don’t quite fit the bill for a movie or a show. The experiment works as Werewolf by Night is a blast from start to finish that allows Marvel Studios to play with more unusual aspects of their comic book source material without being dependent on massive budgets.

After dipping a toe into the horror genre with “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” earlier this year, the Marvel Cinematic Universe jumps into the deep end with “Werewolf by Night” — well, as much as it can within the MCU’s strict PG-13 parameters. It’s the creepiest and bloodiest Marvel project by far, and clocking in at a lean 53 minutes long, it’s a perfect, snack-sized Halloween treat heading into the spookiest of seasons.
The set-up to director Michael Giacchino’s “Werewolf by Night” is simple: A group of deadly monster hunters arrive at Bloodstone Temple to participate in a hunt to win the Bloodstone (the latest Marvel MacGuffin) and become heirs to the creepy, beast-filled property. In addition to hunting their prey, the characters turn on each other during a bloody night of backstabbing and creature carnage.

At this moment, no streamer is having more fun with its combination of boundless programming real estate, boundless money and boundless IP than Disney+. Whether it’s six-hour commercials — err… “documentaries” — for Disney-adjacent properties or five-minute animated shorts built around various beloved characters, it’s never entirely clear when the thing premiering on Disney+ is going to be an ongoing series, limited series, feature-length movie or nebulously unspecified “special.”
In that latter category, Disney+ dropped the generally inconsistent Muppets Haunted Mansion last October. It continued the company’s baffling ongoing struggle to figure out smart things to do with the seemingly endlessly fungible Muppets franchise, but at only 49 minutes and still packed with appealing moments, it felt like exactly the sort of small, jeopardy-free swing Disney should be taking.
The same is true of this October’s Disney+ Halloween season special, Werewolf by Night.

Director Michael Giacchino channels his adolescent love of “Creature Double Feature” and “The Twilight Zone” by partnering with writers Heather Quinn and Peter Cameron to create one of the most intriguing Marvel projects to date.

Marvel gets into the Halloween spirit this year with a new Disney+ special that introduces new characters to the MCU with a stylish twist. Werewolf by Night presents as a classic horror movie, dropping viewers into the middle of a secret world of monster hunters. The retro stylings and a pair of endearing leads successfully distract, at least for a while, from some of the more conventional MCU traits that prevent it from venturing too far into horror territory.
Ulysses Bloodstone’s passing leaves the throne open for a new leader of his monster hunter guild. His wife has assembled a group of the most ruthless monster slayers at Bloodstone Castle for a ceremonious hunt to determine their new ruler. The winner of the quest must successfully retrieve the Bloodstone from a creature prowling the castle grounds, and the hunters are free to take out their competition if it suits them.
