MaryAnn’s quick take… Familiar in its overall storytelling arcs about risktaking and redemption, but also a sincere tribute to our new firefighting heroes for a warmer planet. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have read the source material (though only after I’d seen the movie) (and I am indifferent about it)

New heroes for a hotter, more fiery planet? Could be. Elite firefighter “hotshots” are the guys who helicopter or hike into wildfires and break them, saving not just a house or two but entire towns, and also wildlife and nature, too. (They literally call themselves hotshots, and it’s tough to snort at this macho boasting because they’re so genuinely badass but also so beneficial, with no downsides. Their important work does not require, say, hurting or killing other people,...

As Northern California prepares to recover from a devastating series of wildfires, the heroic and poignant true story behind one of the worst firefighter tragedies in U.S. history is now in theaters.
Only the Brave tells the story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, a highly trained team of wildland firefighters that lost 19 of its 20 members when they became entrapped in the Yarnell Hill blaze in Arizona on June 30, 2013.
The wildfire was ignited by lightning on June 28, 2013, and it quickly spread over 8,300 acres through a combination of strong winds, high temperatures and dry conditions caused by drought.

Twenty stand-up, small town guys. An elite squad of first responders in the Arizona mountains. Everyday heroes whose loved ones suffered the “greatest loss of firefighters since 9/11.” Any studio head would likely break a finger motioning to greenlight that concept if it came through on spec, but that’s not how it was born. The story of Josh Brolin and Miles Teller’s “Only The Brave,” out Friday from Sony Pictures, happened in real life and was adapted from a widely-read 2013 GQ magazine story. Sean Flynn’s “No Exit” was published in the pages of the Conde Nast title in 2013 and.

Here’s yet another “inspired by true events” film , just in time for the somber Fall season. Somber, the right word for this one. Unlike this weekend’s other non-fiction flicks, it’s set in the not too distant past, not decades ago, but in this decade, the 2010’s. It concerns a group of men who regularly risk their lives, and often make the ultimate sacrifice, in order to protect their fellow men. And it shines a light on the families that must stay behind and hope that all goes well. You may be thinking that’s it’s another those on the front line, our soldiers overseas sagas as in the films The Hurt Locker and American Sniper. Well, these heroes aren’t on foreign soil, though they are on the front line, one made of flame. And with their special clothing and gear ,they could be mistaken for soldiers.

Wind, humidity and any number of other factors can transform a forest fire in unpredictable ways. And sometimes, movies like “Only the Brave” also find ways to stray from the path we’re expecting them to take. Based on Sean Flynn’s GQ article about the first municipal fire department to become an elite “hot-shot” squad sent in to extinguish huge and deadly forest fires, this film starts out so safely square (and square-jawed), that it feels like a World War II movie about a colorful squadron heading to Normandy. But as the story builds, these characters become richer and more complicated.
