The White House honored former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama with their official portraits at an unveiling ceremony on Sept. 7. Attendees included President Joe Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, the Obamas's family members, as well as Sharon Sprung and Robert McCurdy, the artists behind the pair's likenesses. The Obamas' paintings are the first official portraits that have been introduced to the White House Collection since then-President Obama held an unveiling ceremony for former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush in 2012. The history-making paintings are also the first official White House portraits to feature a Black president and first lady.

Breonna Taylor became famous for the way she died, but the documentary short “Bree Wayy: Promise Witness Remembrance” explores her legacy from a different angle: through the artwork she inspired. The MTV Documentary Films release played at AFI Fest in November and is currently available to stream on Paramount+.
In March 2020, Taylor was murdered by plainclothes police officers in Louisville, Kentucky, who broke down her apartment door and shot her to death after her boyfriend Kenneth Walker fired a warning shot in self-defense at the unknown intruders. None of the officers involved were charged for killing her, which along with the murders of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery — all taking place between February and May of that year — inspired international outrage and worldwide protests in support of Black lives.

Guillermo del Toro and Steven Spielberg formed their own two-person film club during the pandemic.
“During the lockdown he encouraged me and I encouraged him, we found movies we had never seen before and we let each other know what they were,” Spielberg said. “So the lockdown was literally spent watching movies, getting on text and talking for hours about the film. He knows more about films than Martin Scorsese.”
Spielberg’s remarks came after “The Shape of Water” director honored him Saturday night at Lacma’s 10th annual Art + Film Gala at Lacma.
Spielberg admitted he was anxious about being recognized by a museum because he has never called himself an “artist.”
“I never know what to feel when people refer to me as an ‘artist’ or call what I make ‘art’ because I don’t think I’ve ever referred to myself in that way,” the “West Side Story” director said.

Typically, Lacma’s Art+Film Gala shines a spotlight on each discipline by honoring a standout creative from each space, done in front of a well-heeled crowd of art, entertainment and philanthropy insiders. There is an infectious joy to DeWanda Wise's voice that can't be resisted, especially when chatting over the phone while thousands of miles apart. For two years the 35-year-old actress made Netflix subscribers fall in love with her, first as Nola Darling in the recently canceled, Spike Lee-directed series based on his 1986 film She's Gotta Have It, and then as Erin Kennedy in Someone Great, the romantic comedy that had everyone singing Lizzo's "Truth Hurts" with relish. Though the two have a few differences between them, each one has a thread of Wise that is impossible to miss: a bright vivaciousness that you can't help but be drawn by.
