The video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) quickly became Blumhouse Productions’ highest-grossing movie when it reached theatres and the Peacock streaming service back in October, surpassing the likes of Split, The Invisible Man, The Black Phone, M3GAN, the recent Halloween sequel trilogy, and the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge franchises with its haul of $295 million. So we should be hearing a sequel announcement any day now… and cast member Matthew Lillard says he would be excited to come back for another Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Lillard told Syfy Wire he would love to reprise the role of William Afton. “If it does come back, and if I’m lucky to be brought back, sure, yeah. I mean, I barely got to touch him, right? I got to kill my daughter, but we know nothing about him. We know nothing about his history, about his journey.

It was a very crowded holiday weekend at the box office, with Disney's "Wish" and director Ridley Scott's "Napoleon" taking the lion's share of attention, while Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" ended up topping the charts for a second weekend in a row in a surprise upset. While all of that was going on, Blumhouse's smash horror hit "Five Nights at Freddy's" quietly became the studio's biggest hit ever. Yes, as hard as it may be to believe, the video game adaptation now stands alone as the biggest of big hits from a studio that has delivered a great many hits over the last decade.

The director behind the Five Nights at Freddy's movie finally confirmed a long speculated-upon detail about the identity of film protagonist Mike.
While starting from humble beginnings as a fairly barebones horror video game, Five Nights at Freddy's (Fnaf) lore has become one of the deepest internet rabbit holes one can go down.
The big-screen take on Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria remained largely faithful to the games, including all sorts of minute details from its digital counterpart. One thing fans have wondered about would come over to the movie version of the Fnaf franchise, however, is the identity of series mainstay Mike (played by Josh Hutcherson in the movie).

While several big-budget movies have experienced quite a bit of trouble at the box office both this year and since the pandemic first started in general, one genre continues to stay afloat consistently: horror. And when such movies are geared toward younger audiences and inspired by source material with a rabid fanbase to begin with? Well, that's when you know you probably have a hit on your hands.
That's exactly what happened with "Five Nights at Freddy's," the movie based on the cult video game franchise that promptly smashed box office records the weekend of its release. Not even a thorough critical lashing could stop this runaway hit in its tracks, adding another appropriately irreverent layer to a phenomenon that's likely to become a gateway film for young horror fans everywhere. In Emma Tammi's new horror film "Five Nights at Freddy's," based on the popular video game series, a night watchman (Josh Hutcherson) is stalked through a disused, 1980s pizza restaurant/arcade called Freddy Fazbear's by the restaurant's animatronic animal band. By the all-too-complex mythology of the film, taken from the games, the animatronics have been brought to life by the souls of missing children, kidnapped and murdered by an evil stalker in a yellow bunny costume. It's best not to delve too deeply into the "FNaF" canon, as it gets very complicated very quickly. Focus on the fact that people are being stalked and killed by robotic Chuck E. Cheese-style pizza mascots, and you'll be on surer footing.
The Freddy Fazbear's band consists of the bear Freddy (Kevin Foster), the chicken Chica (Jessica Weiss), the red fox Foxy (voiced by Kellen Goff), and the blue rabbit Bonnie (Jade Kindar-Martin). Kindar-Martin,...

Hand over your crowns, Batman and Iron Man, it's Mario and Freddy Fazbear's time to reign dominant over the box office. Yes, it seems video game adaptations might be the next big thing in Hollywood, now that the generation of kids who were raised on gaming consoles and point-and-click titles are old enough to purchase movie tickets for themselves. And with "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" allowing Nintendo to successfully expand into the film business, what better time for the paterfamilias of high-fantasy video game series, "The Legend of Zelda," to finally make its way to the big screen in live-action?
This isn't the first time Nintendo has adapted the adventures of Link, Zelda, and the other citizens of Hyrule for a different medium. 1989's "The Super Mario Bros. It's a wonder that horror filmmakers don't scare themselves senseless all the time. Whenever I see creepy set pieces like the freaky clowns from "Hell House LLC" or monster designs like the one brought to life by Bonnie Aarons in "The Nun," I imagine I'd be running for the hills after spending too much time on set -- like Bill Hader sprinting away from Bill Skarsgard's Pennywise on the set of "It: Chapter 2." It's no wonder, then, that the life-sized animatronic puppets and costumes used on the set of the new "Five Nights at Freddy's" movie gave some of the cast and crew the willies.

Golden Freddy appears in the Five Nights at Freddy's movie, but he's a bit different from his depiction in the video games.
Golden Freddy is a super rare animatronic that haunts Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria. Reports have the chances of Golden Freddy appearing in the first game as 1 in 100,000.
The logic of the character's appearances and significance in the lore of the Fnaf is still debated by theorists and fans to this day. However, Golden Freddy does have a more defined role in the movie version.

It's no surprise that Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria struggled with repeat customers, especially after the Bite of '87. It's also no surprise that "Five Nights at Freddy's," the movie adaptation of the original horror game by Scott Cawthon, has dropped sharply in its second weekend at the box office, despite a lack of fresh competition.
Variety reports that "Five Nights at Freddy's" is on track to gross $17.8 million this weekend, a drop of 78% from its monstrous $80 million opening last week -- which was the third-biggest debut for a horror movie of all time, behind only "It" and "It: Chapter Two." As huge as this drop is (50-60% is more typical for a second weekend), it's neither a great shock nor something that the studio is likely to worry about. In fact, NBCUniversal almost certainly anticipated this when the decision was made to give "Five Nights at Freddy's" a day-and-date release on its struggling streaming service,...

Emma Tammi's "Five Nights at Freddy's," an adaptation of the popular video game series that began in 2014, has already raked in a great deal of box office lucre, making over $132 million on a modest $20 million budget in its first weekend of release. This, despite also being released on Peacock on the same day. It seems that the game's reputation preceded it, and the film was attended by many, many "Freddy's" fans eager to see the wicked animatronic Freddy Fazzbear commit acts of violence.

Despite a day-and-date release, poor critics’ reviews, and a probable lack of awareness from most moviegoers old enough to remember using Windows 95, Universal’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s” has set a new opening weekend record for its production company Blumhouse with an impressive $80 million opening. Who to thank for its stellar turnout: Gen Z audiences that some exhibitors have been worried aren’t as interested in going out to the movies in 2023.
According to demographic data from Universal, 81% of the video game adaptation’s opening weekend crowd was under 25, with 43% being between the ages of 13-17. Over the past decade, the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” games have built a devoted following among Gen Z gamers that any video game or horror franchise would love to have. And even if the box office returns fall off sharply next weekend, this $20 million production has the makings of another new franchise for Blumhouse.

Five Nights at Freddy’s filmmaker Emma Tammi has now set the opening weekend record of $80 million for a Blumhouse film, and she’s keenly aware that her journey to this point was an unlikely one.
Tammi started out as a documentary filmmaker, tackling such subjects as endurance running in Fair Chase (2014) and the 2016 Presidential Election in the Jason Blum-produced Election Day: Lens Across America (2017). From there, the producers of Fair Chase approached her about the supernatural horror film, The Wind (2018), after seeing the way she and co-director Alex Cullen captured New Mexico in their doc. They wanted Tammi to bring those same instincts to The Wind’s own New Mexico backdrop amidst the Old West.

The film adaptation of the video game Five Night’s At Freddy’s broke box office records during its opening weekend in theaters, and its respect for the game’s fandom played a big role in its success. Two creators who helped popularize Fnaf — game theorist Matthew ‘MatPat‘ Patrick and Let’s Play star CoryxKenshin — had cameos in the film adaptation.
The Fnaf film was produced by the horror masters at Blumhouse, with Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson in the leading role. During its opening weekend, the adaptation reeled in $78 million at the North American box office and $130 million globally. According to Variety, those numbers established several records: Five Nights At Freddy’s had the biggest domestic debut of any movie released during Halloween weekend, and it gave Blumhouse its most lucrative international opening of all time.
“It’s so fun when it works,” Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum wrote on X.

Halloweekend was made for frights at the box office, but few could have predicted the jump-scare of a $78 million opening for “Five Nights at Freddy’s.” Universal’s video game adaptation, hailing from game creator Scott Cawthorn and Blumhouse, just beat out “Scream VI” and “M3GAN” for biggest horror release of the year while streaming simultaneously on Peacock.

Freddy Fazbear and his creepy animatronic buddies are lighting up the box office, as Universal/Blumhouse’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is setting multiple industry records with its $78 million domestic/$130 million global opening weekend.
Not only is it more than double the highest opening seen on Halloween weekend and the largest opening for a film releasing day-and-date on home platforms, but it has also topped the 2018 revival of “Halloween” to become the best opening ever for Blumhouse.
While its numbers aren’t as high as “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Barbie,” or “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is enjoying the same kind of strong hardcore fan turnout as all three of those 2023 box office hits.
Rather than stay home and watch the movie on Peacock, “Five Nights” fans want to see it together in a packed theater, and social media has been filled with pictures of...

Whenever someone says "I hate horror movies," there's a high probability that what they're really saying is "I hate jump scares." Of course, any good genre historian knows that there's far more to a horror film than a jump scare, but by and large, folks who don't enjoy horror films typically don't enjoy the sensation of feeling scared above all else. That rush of adrenaline can be a thrilling impression for many, but deeply uncomfortable for others. Enduring that feeling is often part of the allure — a means to test the limits of body and mind without having to put yourself in any real danger.

Once upon a time, the Halloween box office belonged to Freddy Krueger. Now it belongs to Freddy Fazbear as Universal/Blumhouse’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is on pace to set a new studio record for Blumhouse with a $78 million opening.
If that figure holds, it will pass the previous Blumhouse record of $76.2 million set in 2018 by the revival of “Halloween.” Even if Saturday and Sunday numbers slip, it is set to more than double the record for the highest weekend total posted by a film on Halloween weekend, a record that previously belonged to “Saw III” with $33 million in 2006.
The adaptation of Scott Cawthon’s indie horror video game series also passed the record for the highest opening weekend set by a film released simultaneously on home platforms, topping the $49 million opening of fellow Blumhouse film “Halloween Kills” in 2021. Like that film, “Five Nights” was released day-and-date on Peacock,...

"Why do kids like 'Five Nights at Freddy's' so much?" This is a question I've gotten a lot over the last few months, as many adults rightfully see the uncanny horrors of killer animatronics. Meanwhile, younger fans are begging for Freddy Fazbear stuffies and one of the over 80 different Funko Pop releases. As frightening as they are, there's something weirdly cute and comforting about these mechanical monsters, because the innocence of what's inside the animatronics creeps through the terror.
The lore of "Five Nights at Freddy's" is pretty twisted, with the villainous William Afton murdering children and stuffing their corpses inside the animatronic machines. This means that as Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy shuffle around the pizzeria, they're doing so with the remnants of dead children. But in a heartfelt turn, the live-action adaptation has allowed the animatronics to maintain...

"Five Nights At Freddy's" just premiered in theaters and on Peacock, and the adaptation of a much-loved horror video game is already garnering strong reactions from fans and critics alike. While some folks flocking to theaters have been waiting nearly a decade to see the animatronic antics of Freddy Fazbear and his murderous friends on screen, newcomers to the franchise are also getting the chance to see what the fuss (or should I say fuzz?) is all about.
Though the "Five Nights At Freddy's" game franchise created by Scott Cawthon features nine video games and assorted spinoffs and the complex lore to match, the new movie introduces the universe with a seemingly simple premise. What if a night-time security guard (Josh Hutcherson) at a Chuck E. The "Five Nights At Freddy's" game franchise and its feature film adaptation share the same basic premise: would you, either as a game player or in the audience proxy guise of Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson) in the film, take a night job as a security guard in an abandoned '80-style kids entertainment establishment, a la Chuck E Cheese or ShowBiz Pizza? Furthermore, the premise assumes that the "Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria" restaurant was a successful venture in its heyday, with its original animatronic characters putting on a faux-concert of the latest '80s pop hits while "interacting" in real-time with the guests.
All of that lore nearly completely flies out the window when one actually sees what Freddy, Chica, and their other robot friends actually look like: these things are creepy looking from the jump! And that's before they become possessed by the spirits (not to mention the decomposing bodies) of murdered children,...

A venerable jump-scare of the fall film season, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is poised to become the biggest horror movie of the year. With a box office prediction of $50 million, director Emma Tammi’s animatronic house of horrors stands to outdo “The Exorcist: Believer” and “Saw X,” which earned $26.5 million and $18.3 million during their respective openings.
“I’m taking all of these predictions with a grain of salt, only because you never know,” Tammi told IndieWire in a phone interview.
“It’s amazing to be going into this weekend leading with all this excitement and those strong projections. But at the end of the day, I think my biggest nerves are wrapped around whether or not the fan base is going to embrace this film. And I’m staying focused on that. Everything else will be gravy if it comes — just keeping fingers crossed.”

Pizza, a security guard, and – most importantly – homicidal robots are key elements of Universal Pictures and Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s, based on the popular video game.
Five Nights focuses on Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson), a former mall security guard who was recently fired for beating up the father of a little boy who he mistakenly thought was a stranger trying to kidnap the child. Mike can’t really be faulted; he’s haunted by the memory of witnessing his little brother being kidnapped when he was 12.
Desperate to find another job to retain custody of his 10-year-old sister Abby (Piper Rubio), Mike reluctantly accepts the job of overnight security guard at the closed, formerly family-friendly restaurant Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. The restaurant was extremely popular in the 1980s (think Chuck E. Cheese) but...

Taylor Swift isn’t the “marquee character” stepping up to save theaters from a strike-caused theatrical vacuum. Freddy Fazbear, the title antagonist in the popular horror-comedy video game “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is doing his part. The Blumhouse-produced adaptation, produced for $20 million and boasting an all-audiences PG-13 rating, earned a whopping $10.3 million in Thursday preview grosses.
Even if the poorly-reviewed IP adaptation plays frontloaded (think a 20% Thursday-to-weekend split like the “Twilight Saga” sequels), either because it’s “for the fans” or because it’s concurrently available on Peacock, Universal is still looking at a $50 million-plus opening weekend. If it plays anything like a conventional, less-frontloaded film, well, a 15% Thursday-to-weekend split gives it $66 million for the weekend.
Based on a series of comically horrific (or horrifically comical) video games centered on a Chuck E. Cheese-type establishment that kills people, the film arrives in theaters just nine years after the first point-and-click survival video game.

Blumhouse and Universal's live-action adaptation of "Five Nights at Freddy's" is finally here, and it certainly feels like the start of the next big horror movie franchise. The story about possessed animatronics attacking humans after hours is scary enough on its own, but learning that the killer robots run on the souls of murdered children makes it a recipe for nightmare fuel. And even still, Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie the Bunny, Foxy the Fox, Chica the Chicken, and Mr. Cupcake are not the scariest characters in the film. No, that title belongs to Steve Raglan aka William Afton who becomes — as of the end of the film — Springtrap.

There is a scene in Five Nights at Freddy’s where two animatronic monstrosities—one a giant teddy bear and the other a yellow canary so devious even Sylvester would avoid it—look menacingly at a character who watches them both on a security camera. Now, how they know this poor doomed soul is looking at the security feed at that exact moment, or why they harbor him ill intent, I cannot say. What I can attest to is they’re so determined to end his life that they are serving him a dish best served screaming. No, really! The pair carry a sentient cupcake on a dish (it even has eyes and teeth), and they drop it down an air duct with the clear assumption being the malevolent pastry will find its way through the vents and commit homicide.

The latest horror film from Blumhouse concerns a security guard tasked with safeguarding a long-shuttered family-themed pizza restaurant whose giant animatronic animal characters spring to life and go on murderous rampages.
And that’s the most credible element of the story.
Based on, what else, a hugely successful video game franchise, Five Nights at Freddy’s, premiering simultaneously in theaters and on Peacock, never quite figures out what it wants to be. It seems to be aiming for cult status, but isn’t nearly transgressive enough to achieve it. It promises a gore fest, but keeps the violence sanitized enough to secure a PG-13 rating. And rather than expand on the sort of mayhem contained in the video game experience, it provides a tragic backstory that seeks to provide emotional depth but instead just slows the proceedings to a crawl. The ultimate result is a snooze.

You’re all alone in the middle of the night, inside a dilapidated third-rate Chuck E. Cheese. The paint is cracking. The games are busted. The rooms are empty except for the rotting animatronic mascots whose unconvincing “friendly” faces are permanently contorted in giant, toothy grins. When you look away from these rotting mechanical puppets you hear a noise. When you look back at them… they’ve moved.
The genius of “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” the video game, is largely conceptual. It’s a cocktail of anti-nostalgia, wherein childhood iconography gets grossly corrupted by the ravages of time and retroactive context. Something terrible happened here. All we can do now is watch and wait for its ghosts to find us, and hope we can shut the door on them in time.
The terror of the video game series is sadly lost in the tedious mythology of the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” movie.

The weekend before Halloween is set to be a good one for the box office with the debut of Universal/Blumhouse’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” a horror film based on the indie video game series that has blown by exhibitors’ expectations for ticket presales despite its day-and-date release on Peacock.
Independent projections for “Five Nights at Freddy’s” are predicting an opening weekend of at least $50 million. But theater owners who spoke with TheWrap say there’s huge upside for the film and the potential for a launch as high as $80 million.
Those optimistic predictions should be taken with a lot of salt — exhibitors were predicting $100 million-plus figures for “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” that the still successful concert film didn’t reach — but the consensus within the industry is that “Five Nights” has a good shot of beating the $49.4 million opening of “Halloween Kills,” which also opened day-and-date on Peacock in 2021.

Nearly a decade ago, Scott Cawthon’s point-and-click survival game Five Nights at Freddy’s was released into the world and became an instant hit, thanks to its effective jump scare delivery system via killer animatronics and engaging lore. The concept practically begged for a feature adaptation, and so did the video game series’ loyal fanbase. It’s finally here, with Cawthon producing and sharing co-writing duties with Seth Cuddeback and director Emma Tammi to ensure a faithful adaptation. While seeing this world and its killer characters on screen might be enough to appease the fanbase, don’t expect the same level of visceral scares.

In the new film version of the popular video game Five Nights At Freddy’s, it is the Jim Henson Creature Shop and its talented puppeteers and character actors who are the real stars of this Blumhouse take on the game that the under-25 male set particularly warmed up to since its debut in 2014. Whether they will be happy with this carefully constructed but safe PG-13 movie that sacrifices hard-core horror for character development and that at times just drags along, time will tell.
In case you aren’t familiar with the game franchise created by Scott Cawthorn, Five Nights At Freddy’s is a phenomenon in the sector, having hatched nine different games to date, several spinoffs, a novel trilogy and an anthology series all for the love of Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy the Pirate, 70foot-tall animatronic creatures who are capable of violence or love depending who is in the room with them.

Hollywood has not been successful at turning video games into movies — a disappointing streak that “Five Nights at Freddy’s” fails to correct. Despite being shepherded by savvy low-budget horror producer Jason Blum, this is a rather empty and unexciting effort at attracting horror fans during Halloween season. Director Emma Tammi’s film squanders the game’s strange and unique-looking creatures, failing to add recognizable traits to the characters written for the film.
The script takes the game’s lead player, Mike, and tries to add a human dimension by giving him a convoluted backstory. In the game, he’s a night watchman keeping guard at the abandoned Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. Here, Mike’s a security guard played by Josh Hutcherson, who’s forced to take a job at this place in order to keep custody of his young sister, Abby (Piper Rubio). Producer Jason Blum believes what sets Five Nights at Freddy’s apart from other adaptations is “the care that was taken with the story to create something based on a beloved game.” Universal Pictures’ new featurette is dedicated to the game’s fans, and director/co-writer Emma Tammi says that every creative decision they made was with the goal of doing justice to the game and its massive fan base.
Josh Hutcherson and Elizabeth Lail lead the cast of the horror film. Piper Rubio, Kat Conner Sterling (We Have a Ghost), Mary Stuart Masterson (Blindspot), and Matthew Lillard also star.
Scott Cawthon created the Five Night at Freddy’s game and is involved as a writer and producer. Seth Cuddeback also co-wrote the screenplay, with Bea Sequeira, Russell Binder, Marc Mostman, and Christopher H. Warner executive producing. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop created the film’s animatronic characters.

When "Five Nights at Freddy's" creator Scott Cawthon first began advertising his new game, only three animatronics were displayed — Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie the Bunny, and Chica the Chicken. The reason behind the decision was to add to the scare factor of the game, catching players off guard when suddenly a pirate fox with a hook for a hand came sprinting down the halls of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. It was extremely effective, and given the character's different design from the main three, many fans find Foxy to be the scariest of the original animatronics.
