This week, the Number One song in America is a diss track. Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” debuted at the top of the charts, to the surprise of no one who’s seen the track go viral since its release earlier this month. The song is buoyed by a catchy DJ Mustard beat and a slew of unforgettably delivered lyrics by Kendrick — even if the lines are vulgar barbs toward his rival Drake.
What does the record’s success mean? For one, it highlights how desensitized we are as a music-listening public.

Victoria Monét took home the Grammy for best new artist at the 2024 awards ceremony on Sunday.
After being presented with the honor by Samara Joy (who won best new artist last year), Monét quipped, “Thank you to the champagne service tonight. That’s my first thank you.”
“Thank you to the Recording Academy voting members. This is because of you guys, the singer continued. “You guys pressed that button. You were in your emails. Thank you so much.”
She also showed some love to her single mother for “raising this really bad girl. Thank you so much.”

Taylor Swift is the odds-on favorite to make history with an Album of the Year victory for “Midnights.” It would be her fourth win in the category following victories for “Fearless,” “1989” and “Folklore.” That would set a new record for the most Album of the Year wins for any recording artist ever, breaking Swift’s tie with Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon. But she’s only tipped to win two other categories out of her six total nominations: Best Pop Vocal Album for “Midnights...

This year’s slate of eight Best New Artist hopefuls at the Grammys is one of the strongest of the past decade, mixing big commercial names like Ice Spice and Noah Kahan with some of the most buzzworthy new musicians around like Fred Again, Victoria Monét and Gracie Abrams. Perhaps what stands out the most, though, is how much the category was shaken up when the nominations were revealed. What was thought to be a safe bet for Ice Spice has suddenly opened up into what’s one of the strongest categories in the general field this year.
A big part of that was the rise of Monét, whom many didn’t even consider a shoo-in for a nomination. 10 biggest Grammy surprises: We goofed by not predicting Victoria Monet, Janelle Monae, Jelly Roll …
The Grammy nominations were announced on Friday morning, November 10, and Gold Derby’s predictions in the big four general field categories were 68.75% accurate, which means we correctly forecast 22 out of 32 nominees across Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. But that also means we were wrong 10 times. Scroll down to see who made the cut in spite of their odds. And check out the list of nominations here.
R&b singer-songwriter Victoria Monet scored twice despite our predictions all but counting her out with 100/1 odds. She’s among the eight contenders for Best New Artist even though we’d ranked her 14th in the race. Just 70 Gold Derby users anticipated her bid there. Even more surprising was her nom for Record of the Year for “On My Mama”; only one user out of more than 2,000 who made predictions saw that one coming.

Skrillex has reunited with Boys Noize for a new single, “Fine Day Anthem.” The pair recently previewed the track during a show in Berlin and it marks their first collaboration since their dual 2019 EP Turn Off The Lights.
The cover art for the single, created by digital artist Thomas Harrington Rawle using both studio photography and manual digital painting, is intended to evoke ’90’s rave photos. On Twitter, Skrillex noted that the duo have included snippets from single in their DJ sets for the past year.

The name DJ Steve Aoki has become synonymous with house and Edm and his popularity exploded beyond being able to accommodate fans in small clubs – something he truly misses.
“When you play in these smaller shows, you really have a more intimate experience with your fans and the people that come see you. And I try to do that. Even at the bigger shows,” Aoki shared with Showbiz Cheat Sheet.
“I look at the fans in the front row and the people that are really engaged with the set, instead of glazing over a lot of people. I think it all boils down to the people that really care,” he said. “And the smaller shows, you really get to zone in on that. So the intimate shows are really important. I still play smaller clubs and in those environments, I get to not necessarily play just my hits. I get...

−, or Subtract, is the fifth and, according to the British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, final installment in his series of albums using mathematical symbols as their titles, which stretches all the way back to 2011’s +. His latest release is appropriately named in the context of his career: When Sheeran initially broke through in the early 2010s, he was hailed for his storytelling-centric songwriting, which was given dramatic heft by his lilting voice and interpretative skill. As his star rose, his music began to take on more baggage—radio-ready touches that helped...

One of the biggest mysteries of the past Grammy cycle was the Best New Artist race, which seemed relatively weak and uncertain compared to past years. That said, the lineup ended up including some great acts from pop, American roots, alternative, jazz, R&b, and hip-hop, with the winner being jazz singer extraordinaire Samara Joy. This year let’s put on our thinking caps early to see what’s brewing in the race, which might be shaping up to be equally exciting.
Perhaps the most popular new artist right now is New York-based rapper Ice Spice. Ice has managed a couple of big hits, including the pop crossover “Boy’s a Liar, Pt. 2,” alongside PinkPantheress. Both Ice and PinkPantheress look to be heavy favorites for the award, as “Boy’s a Liar” is one of the biggest hits of the eligibility season so far. Ice Spice is arguably a bigger...

A big question hung over the final night of Coachella 2023’s second weekend: What now? Seven days earlier, on April 16, Frank Ocean had closed out the festival’s first weekend with a performance that he himself acknowledged as chaotic at best. Some fans were devastated by it, while others found it off-handedly brilliant; either way, it added up to one of the weirdest headline sets ever.
By the middle of last week, we knew there would be no opportunity for redemption. On Wednesday, Ocean pulled out of the second weekend entirely,...

The Brits 2023 are officially over for another year, and it was Harry Styles's night. As predicted, the "As It Was" singer took home artist of the year, song of the year, best pop / r&b, and album of the year - marking the start of a very good 2023 for the former One Direction member, having won the best album award at the Grammys just a week earlier. Wet Leg and Beyoncé both won two Brits, while The 1975, Aitch, and Becky Hill also scooped the top prizes.
Styles sweeping the board even saw him enter an exclusive club, unofficially named the "4 Brits Club." Dave Rowntree, the drummer of Blur, tweeted on Feb. 12, "I'd like to welcome @Harry_Styles to the #4BritsClub. It's been a bit lonely with just us and @Adele these past years. Next meeting in March – you can bring the biscuits." While there are artists who have won...

Awards ceremonies like the Brits can always do better, but by now they’re just an excuse for a party
There was a five-headed elephant in the room at what was otherwise a strangely flat affair at the Brit Awards. As is tradition with music ceremonies, a row flared up over representation after the nominations were announced. The gender-neutral Artist of the Year category was entirely made up of male artists: Central Cee, Fred Again, George Ezra, Harry Styles and Stormzy.
The switch from gendered categories was implemented in 2021 after Sam Smith – who came out as non-binary two years earlier – urged awards shows to be “reflective of the society we live in”. At the first non-gendered awards show in 2022, Adele walked away with the Artist of the Year prize, for which Little Simz, Sam Fender, Dave and Ed Sheeran had also been nominated.

Harry Styles lit up the stage at the 2023 Brit Awards in London on Feb. 11. After opening the show with a dazzling performance of "As It Was" - in a red-hot sequin jacket, no less - Styles accepted the award for artist of the year, presented by Salma Hayek. His fellow nominees included Central Cee, Fred Again, George Ezra, and Stormzy. While the show has made attempts at expanding its efforts for inclusivity in recent years, adopting gender-neutral categories last year, the lack of women nominees in the artist of the year category shows that there is still work to be done. The "Daylight" singer took the moment to acknowledge the women who were snubbed for the award.

The 2023 Brit Awards are taking place this Saturday 11 February at the O2 Arena in London.
The full list of nominations were announced in January, and revealed one of the most eclectic lists of nominees in recent memory.
Recent Grammy winners Wet Leg emerged as one of the most-nominated acts with four nods, alongside regular Brits attendee and Grammy Album of the Year winner, Harry Styles.
Other acts up for some of the night’s top prizes include rapper Stormzy, rock band Arctic Monkeys, and The 1975.
In the international categories, Irish rock group Fontaines DC can be found muscling up against K-pop stars Blackpink and hip-hop artists Drake and 21 Savage.
The Artist of the Year category faced widespread criticism after being entirely dominated by male acts, just one year after the Brits scrapped gendered categories.
On the night, live performances will come from artists including Stormzy, Lizzo, Harry Styles and Wet Leg.
