What’s it like to play Dracula? And Henry VIII and Elvis? And play tennis for Woody Allen? Only one man can say, and he’s waiting to tell all about his versatile career
Jonathan Rhys Meyers has played everyone from Elvis (in 2005 miniseries Elvis) to Dracula (in 2013 TV series Dracula) and Henry VIII in The Tudors (the latter earning him two Golden Globe nominations.) On film, he’s helped out Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible III, played bisexual glam rocker Brian Slade in Velvet Goldmine and, of course, coached football to Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra in Bend It Like Beckham. And let’s not forget Woody Allen’s Match Point, in which he plays social climbing tennis pro Chris Wilton who has the hots for Scarlett Johansson.

Christian Bale is known for disappearing into his roles and "Velvet Goldmine" was no exception. Written and directed by Todd Haynes, the 1998 movie was named for David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" era B-side. Haynes is no stranger to music movies, having begun his career with the 1987 controversial short film, "Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story." He also helmed the incredible "I'm Not There" in 2007, which explored the various phases of Bob Dylan's career through a host of different actors. Haynes also made the excellent recent documentary about my all-time favorite band, "The Velvet Underground."
"Velvet Goldmine" chronicles the life of pop star Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a Bowie-esque figure, as well as his love affair with the Iggy Pop-inspired Curt Wild (Ewan McGregor). Their performances are swoon-worthy — Meyers and McGregor both did their own singing in the movie. Plus, the film's fictional bands included members of Radiohead, Suede,...

We begin our dive into 1998 with one of two films to get lone nominations for Costume Design but deserved way more attention in other categories. I’ll have plenty to say about the treasure trove of supporting actressing in Beloved next week, but who could be a better starting point for a retrospective in this category than Toni Collette’s prismatic turn in Velvet Goldmine? Collette is a regular godsend to directors who need a smart actress to ground and humanize second-tier characters that might otherwise seem wan or uninteresting. The role of Mandy Slade, the storied wife of disgraced, long-missing glam superstar Brian Slade, is perhaps too fascinatingly written and too doted over by director Todd Haynes and his...
