He was born into an artistic family. His father, Adolf Ilin, was a famous actor in The Sverdlovsk Theater and then in The Mayakovsky Theater in Moscow. In 1948 he graduated from the film actor school in Sverdlovsk, in 1955 - the directing department of GITIS.
