GENNADI VYCHESLAVOVICH PODELSKY was born in Leningrad (now St Petersburgh), USSR. He graduated from Tallinn Conservatory in 1954 with a major in composition under Prof Eugene Kapp. Podelsky worked with the Estonian Philharmonic Orchestra as their conductor-in-residence (1946-48) and, later, as their recital pianist (1948-57), during which time he performed in concert with many of Estonia's leading singers. Podelsky was also the artistic leader of the vocal-instrumental group known as 'Laine' from 1960 to 1970.
Although the major part of his output represents popular and folk music (well over 500-published songs), Podelsky also composed serious music (chamber, choral and orchestral) as well as that for stage plays, television and feature films.
Podelsky received the Literature and Arts Award by the Estonian Lenin Communist Youth Society in 1968, followed by the Annual Music Award by the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1979.- Writer
