But then it turns out that Tremblet had quit his job for years even though he continued his life regularly, going out in the morning, returning in the evening and taking home the salary. Maybe he wasn't a poor devil after all.

Nicole pretends she is in need of help while actually she is laying a snare: she charges Maigret with trying of seducing her. Nobody says the truth because Nicole is the daughter of a very important political man. So Maigret himself is inquired and has to abandon his investigations on the money traffic. But Maigret is not a man to give up.
- Emile Ducrau is assaulted and Maigret is in charge of the investigation. Emile Ducrau is a self-made man and now he is a rich ship-owner. The inquire seems to end when Ducrau's son kills himself leaving a letter in which he declare himself guilty of his father's assault. Maigret, however, is not convinced and keeps on the investigation, a psychological investigation, and Maigret will find out the reality of facts and sentiments, concealed by the appearances.

- Cecile is young and beautiful. She lives with her aunt who is a paralytic old woman. Every night she is woken by strange sounds and the next morning she finds the furniture shifted. Cecile decides to tell everything to Maigret who thinks she wants to draw attention to herself.
