- Ursprünglich durften auf dem English Market in der irischen Stadt Cork nur Engländer einkaufen. Das ist längst anders. Die Bandbreite der Lebensmittel ist ganz der irischen Kultur verpflichtet: Kartoffeln, Sodabrot, Fisch, Rindfleisch und Plumpudding. Doch auch Neuem zeigen sich die Marktbesucher aufgeschlossen. Der English Market in der irischen Stadt Cork war bei seiner Errichtung 1788 nur der englischen Bevölkerung vorbehalten - das hat sich zum Glück vor langem geändert. Der Fischhändler Pat ist stolz darauf, dass sogar die Königin von England schon an seinem Stand war, den er von seiner Mutter übernommen hat. Berühmt ist er vor allem für seinen Seeteufel. Der eher unansehnliche Fisch wurde früher an Katzen verfüttert. Doch längst haben die Iren begriffen, welche Köstlichkeit sie da vor sich haben. Es hat sich viel geändert, seit die Iren Hunger leiden mussten, weil die Kartoffelernte ausblieb, doch noch immer ist die Kartoffel eines der beliebtesten Lebensmittel auf der Insel. Auf dem English Market gibt es zahlreiche Biosorten, die je nach Saison variieren. Daneben sind 95 Sorten Brot im Angebot, darunter das traditionelle Sodabrot, und natürlich Rindfleisch von besonderer Qualität. Im Pub am Markt kann man alles zusammen in der täglichen frischen Pub Soup genießen. Doch nicht nur Traditionelles findet sich auf dem Markt. Zwei junge Leute haben sich dem Prinzip der Fermentation verschrieben und bieten veganen Wasserkefir in diversen Geschmacksrichtungen an, darunter Gurke, Hibiskus und Ingwer - und sind damit erfolgreich. Die Tradition bleibt trotz allem wichtig - so ist Geraldines Plumpudding zu Weihnachten der Renner. Er besteht aus 13 Zutaten, die für die zwölf Apostel plus Jesus stehen, und wird traditionell mit Rindertalg hergestellt. Der English Market in Cork bleibt sich treu - ohne Angst vor Veränderungen zu haben.
