- The OvaHimba tribe of the Namib desert, descendants of the Ancient Egyptians from the era of Queen Nefertiti, and once the richest nomadic tribe in Africa, find themselves on the brink of extinction. Trapped in the 1904 Herero-Nama war, they flee and settle in the godforsaken wastes of Kaokoland. Weary of the name 'OvaHimba' - which means 'beggars' - Chief Nguzu has a strategy for resolving their plight.

They must leave their beloved granny and move to the countryside with father and that much hated "new one" because father wants to fulfill his most ardent dream to open a bookstore. The girls consider this to be quite terrible and try everything to be thrown out of the new school. But then everything goes quite different: Ruby discovers that identical twin girls are being looked for to star in a TV series. Suddenly, they notice that they are not as similar at all as they thought, and that each one must find her own way.
- Mario and his brother Alonso become committed to fishing in a coral-reef in the southern Philippines. With many other children of different origin they work for starvation wages on the ship of unscrupulous captain Murène. Together they drive shoals of fish into a big fish trap having to use the dangerous muro-ami technique in the coral-reefs. Fastened to a stone, the little divers jump into the water to reach the depth faster. Without any equipment they dive down 30 meters. The brutal captain treats the exhausted children like slaves. After little Boï is fatally wounded by a swordfish, the situation on the ship gets out of hand. When the boys get to know that the captain has killed Alonso and the fishing company had refused payment and the frequently mentioned bonuses, a bloody mutiny breaks out on the ship which drifts uncontrolled on the ocean. A group of boys leaves the ship in a boat. The little deep-sea divers are left to themselves, are found after a long time and, finally, imprisoned.

- Prince Victor looks in vain for a swan which was wounded by one of his servants. Instead he discovers a beautiful girl with golden hair who has an arrow in her shoulder. She is dumb and can't explain her origin. He falls immediately for her. The girl quickly recovers, but disappears mysteriously, leaving Victor unhappy. The king forbids his son to search for her. Victor is meant to marry the queen of the lake because she has a treasure of precious pearls and is the only one left befitting his rank . She sends her subordinate to kidnap children and uses them to obtain more pearls. Victor gets in touch with his girl during a dream thanks to a magical potion. She is a princess and her name is Odette. The queen of the lake kidnapped her and the other princesses, has taken their speech and transformed them into swans, so she's the one left to marry Victor. Everybody who seems to be dangerous for the queen of the lake is thrown down for a giant man-eating fish. Disguised as a servant, Victor tries to save the princesses and to punish the queen, but she sees through his plans and takes revenge: Odette should live as a swan forever and ever, and Victor should die. But Victor succeeds with help of the detained children to free Odette and the other princesses. Finally, while attempting to escape, the queen of the lake turns to stone.

- Josef Rainer is a road worker in a mountain village in Liechtenstein. His wife Marianne works as a waitress in a restaurant to improve the meager housekeeping money. Some people ask themselves why she has married that poor devil since she could have married into money. But she stays to the keen wood carver. He works out fantastic objects of tree roots, but villagers jeer at him. The family dreams to get a cow of their own to be more independent. One day Josef scrapes together all savings and goes to the cattle market. Due to lack of money, a clever farmer palms a skinny, sick cow off on him. The children Hansli and his friend Ludmila take the cow to their heart. Ludmila even lends her name to the animal. Some time later Josef falls from a mountain and is unable to work for a long time. So a decision is made that cow Ludmila which produces no milk has to be slaughtered. To prevent it, Hansli takes her secretly to an alpine pasture. A miracle happens: Cow Ludmila produces more milk than any other cow after eating a special herb. The villagers ascribe this to the wooden statue of virgin Mary which Josef had made out of a tree root. He can thus sell it to a fair price.
- Six-year-old Louis should stay in Berlin with his aunt Marita while his mother goes to a job interview. Marita is a somewhat grouchy, single and childless career woman who actually doesn't want to take care of Louis, and certainly not visit the zoo with him. While she always chatters in her handy, she leaves him to his own devices which for example are helping homeless people rummaging through trash cans and give his subway ticket to scrounging punks. When his aunt tells him in horror not to talk to strangers anymore, Louis does promptly what he is told, even when a policeman addresses him. Finally, they land in a police station. Marita learns to change her views...

Soon Evi meets little Pauli Engel whose family plays all kinds of musical instruments at home and appears as a music group - the "Engel family". Pauli's parents have a happy marriage and are always there when their children need them. Evi spends much time with the family and livens up. After a while, Evi is diagnosed a cardiac muscle inflammation and she is admitted to a hospital. Even the doctor is worried about her worse condition. This situation brings Evi's parents together again. To give Evi a probable last pleasure, the Engel (Angel) family is called to perform and everybody pretends it is Christmas Eve.
- Argentina during military dictatorship in the early 80s: Hoping for a new life after being released from prison, Alba takes her six-year-old son Inti with her to a remote hippie village in the foothills of the Andes. She settles in the house of a deceased physician and indulges in marijuana and free love. Inti, looking for support, and the other children in the community are on their own. Finally, Alba no longer endures the wild, chaotic life in the community. She emerges a small cabin without water and electricity. Threatened and humiliated by local peasant children, mother and son try to establish themselves under simplest conditions and make a new life for themselves.
