A nobleman promises to get it if he gets beautiful Agnes as a reward. But she fells in love with a handsome adventurer. The monastery has to act shrewd now and play double game. The movie is still the best achievement of the Estonian cinema. Based on a novel.
- A sensitive girl struggles with first love and bullying in a 1980's Soviet orphanage.
- Karge meri (The Smacking Sea) is a film about the work of traditional seal hunters on the smacking Baltic Sea and their life in the coast village. The film is made so realistic that it could be kept even for documentary. Actually, this very slow movie with terrible soundtrack is nothing but traditional Estonian cinema.
- Arabella is a daughter of the world's most terrifying pirate captain. She loves her father but also dreams about a life of a usual girl. Where do such new generation who barely cares for anything come ? Should we blame home or school ? The Father of the boy has always taught his son to claim his rights and fight. But where can it take us if children take to their lives only messages like "eveyone for himself" and "grab as much you can" ?
- In the follow-up of "Kevade" and "Suvi" the same characters have reached their middle-age. Everybody are living quiet family-life but Kiir the tailor who one more time decides to become a farmer and get married.
- A group of sleepless nerds should be taken into sanitarium for hard-therapy. They are taken to a lonely island but no sanitarium is in sight. Suddenly turns out that the nurses have kidnapped the men and are about to give them the only useful medicine they need - fresh air and work. But the patients decide to disobey. There's only one solution - to escape. The film is absolute cult in Estonia.
- A first film made of the 1949 March deportation of Estonian people to Siberia by Soviet Secret Police NKVD. During couple of days and nights nearly 21 thousand people, mostly women and children, were under top secret taken from their homes to railway stations and locked into animal wagons to take a trip of thousands of kilometers to a far, poor, unfriendly and cold land where they were mostly used as cheap (free) labor. The movie presents the events symbolist, as in the leading roles are recognizable the characters from bible Jesus, Satan and Judas. That makes the film top artistic but unrealistic, very slow and difficult to follow. Though in general not bad produced, the acting is time to time too theatrical and unfortunately we have rather another medium-level artistic film here than a worth-to-watch history film.
- Five people who have recently reached their middle-ages are driving through Estonia to visit a famous witch-therapist to get rid of their problems. But isn't it just weariness of life that bothers the people whose life has gone into a deep routine ? The somber-funny road movie gives a good review of life, people and daily problems in Estonia in the end of the Soviet period.
- This is a fairy-tale. An old king punishes his young mardy daughter by sending her to a wide world to learn kindness. Alone with her imprudence only she enters the adventures and miracles that will change her totally, help her to find love and become a queen. Chätrin Bagala in leading role is charming !
- A clumsy radio-announcer is reading a talk-serial in the radio every day. As he puts his dreams in the tale, the story goes more and more difficult to control. Based on a famous radio-serial in Estonia. The announcers who played double roles - man and woman, in the radio, play them as well in the movie.
- Mati is an assistant in TV studio. Patiently he has waited for his time to become a TV star but seems that he has to wait forever. One day an alien called Tipp is sent on Earth (by its chief Tapp) to find out the purpose of Estonian children's TV show "Tipp and Tapp". Tipp nestles himself inside Mati's brains that leads the man to unpredictable actions. The bit-slow and zany comedy is based mostly on real characters of the Estonian National TV in 1960-ies, that is the most funny point in the film. However, no presence of an alien has still officially been confirmed.
- The story of the war film is about paths of the Estonian Shooting Corps (formed by the Red Army) during the WW-2 and how the fight forms an usual man to a loyal soldier. Ideologic aspects of the movie are more hidden than in ordinary Soviet war films but they're still existing.
- A new boy with a extremely golden voice joins a children's singing camp. Not everybody are friendly to him in the beginning but the most beautiful girl likes him. This film is about relations of young people and their life is the summer camp full of choral singing, shown from the sunny side (The movie's name is "A Spring in the Heart"). Starring Toomas Uibo, the child contra-tenor.
- After WW-2 the Estonian forests are full of armed groups - the forest-brothers who carry on the fight against communism. Soviet secret police sends spies among them. The spies are sent under top secrecy, so no-one actually knows who is who. This is a game of cat and mouse, waiting a weaker to make a mistake. For remark, this is a Soviet spy film with adequate moral.
- Georg Lurich was an Estonian world-famous professional wrestler in the early 1900-s who became a legend already in his lifetime. He was called not only the world's best technique-wrestler but he was also a sports-philosopher, health and temperance activist, an efficient sports manager, a talent in acting, writing and chess, a "world's citizen" who spoke more than ten languages and an athlete with enormous popularity. At least 14 wrestling clubs in Europe and USA carried his name. This film is an unpretentious try to recall that unique man, the first world-famous Estonian. They could have done it better.
- It's 1940 - the first summer of the Soviet occupation on the Estonian island Saaremaa. Teenagers stepping in their lives have important decisions to make. Should they support the Soviet regime or join the resistance ? While the movie was made during the Soviet regime, historical details are contorted to confound.
- An easy old-fashioned comedy about a composer who is creating a new song for a coming festival. The song was ment to be kept in secret. Still, some passer-by accidentally hears the tunes of composing, likes it and teaches the song to his friends who teach it to their friends to play it all together at the festival. So the total mess is coming up ! In the leading role Estonian unforgettable opera singer Georg Ots at his best.
- It has to be said that it's one of the Soviet propaganda movies. But it's not the worst one. Eduard is a high-level violin-player. He is also a convinced communist. He loves his homeland Estonia but unfortunately after the WW-1 bloody burghers rule the country. As Eduard dares to fight for equality and freedom, he will be persecuted by authorities.
- A film of a life on a small, windy and desolate Estonian island during the Nazi-occupation. Only two rival tribes live on the island doing mostly fishing. War brings terror on the quiet island. From then on the tribe who wins the "friendship" of the Nazis can dominate also over the other tribe. The film would be much better without politicization (Soviet censorship) and seems therefore at times unrealistic.
- This is a film about one major societal hot spot in Estonia during the Soviet Union period when living spaces were still distributed by state for free. It's about a man who is working as a private real estate agent. It's about another man who is homeless. The task is inspired of massive migration of the people from Soviet Union to Estonia during 1944-1988 that lead to demographical conflict. In addition, the building sector was largely operating only for supporting the migrants with free apartments while the natives had serious lack of living space. That's the idea of the film -- there's lot of living space, however some of us are homeless. They are not tourists, they are at home here but they haven't any home...
