- In the beginning, there is a large excavation pit in the middle of Stuttgart: as large as three entire soccer fields. The Olga Hospital used to stand here. Now apartments are to be built on this site. Young families, couples and even some senior citizens have come together to form a building community for this very purpose. Esther and Andreas, for example: With their two children, they urgently need a larger apartment, because until now the family has showered in the kitchen. Or Iris: She suffers from multiple sclerosis. She and her family would like to move into a handicapped-accessible apartment sooner rather than later. Or Anette and Rashid from Kenya: So far, they have been living with their two children in a small rented apartment. On their own, they could not afford a larger domicile. Ulla has lived alone all her life, but in old age she is afraid of becoming lonely. Max8 is the name of the building community they founded. Actually, they wanted to realize their dream home with a maximum of eight parties. But over the years, more and more people have joined them. As different as their living realities are, they all have one thing in common: the dream of affordable living in the city - in a great community. What's more, it's set to be a very special project, because the spacious apartment building is to be made almost entirely of wood - ecologically and climate-neutral. In the first part of "Abenteuer Baugemeinschaft," the builders plan their house. Ever new problems delay the start of construction by many months. Then, finally, the contract with the city of Stuttgart is signed. But until the underground parking garage for the entire site is built, it's still a matter of waiting. Part of the construction team travels to South Tyrol, where the individual wooden modules for the building are prefabricated. Then, in spring 2018, the time has finally come and the first walls are erected. SWR authors Susanne Müller and Andreas Coerper have accompanied the Stuttgart building group Max8 over four years. From the first summer party at the edge of the construction pit to the inauguration of the new building on the Olgaareal in fall 2019.

- Afghanistan has been in a state of emergency for four decades. In this documentary, for the first time, only women talk about how their lives have changed in Afghanistan. Six Afghan women take the audience on a journey from paradise to hell. The former "Miss Afghanistan 1972" has her say, as does the current Minister of State for Human Rights, the daughter of the last communist president, activists and members of the Afghan parliament. Six Afghan women make the endless war tangible and show how women in particular became victims of violent politics. But it also becomes clear how much courage and bravery Afghan women have. Directed by Lucio Mollica, Marcel Mettelsiefen and Mayte Carrasco, women like Shukria Barakzai, who campaigns for women's rights, show us a very different Afghanistan than we know today. Using mostly unseen archival footage, the film shows girls growing up, going to school and participating in social life in a colorful Kabul in the 1960s. But the "golden age" ends when the monarchy is overthrown and ideological battles break out between communists and Islamists. Even the Soviet Union cannot calm the situation. Its mighty army is defeated by Islamic fighters. When they finally take over Kabul, a downward spiral begins that turns the lives of Afghan women into a dark dungeon. - The armed forces are under pressure - in Germany as well as in France. Both armies are challenged, as they have not been for decades, by foreign deployments from Afghanistan to North Africa. At the same time, the French army - like the German Bundeswehr - is struggling with financial problems, poor material and a shortage of personnel. Outsourcing and cooperation with civilian companies promise favorable prices and quick solutions. In foreign missions, from reconnaissance drones to laundry, nothing can be done without private companies. For example, it is an armaments company that operates the GÜZ, Germany's most important military training center. In addition, our politicians and military leaders are committed to arms exports all over the world in order to maintain the domestic arms industries. Former ministers switch to arms companies as lobbyists. And those who buy weapons from France or Germany also receive training from the respective army. External companies have long since been supplying not only equipment for the armed forces, but also know-how and personnel. How much outsourcing can the state monopoly on the use of force tolerate, and what does that mean for the democratic control of military actions? Our authors had access to the French army and the Bundeswehr, were able to film during exercises and foreign deployments such as in Afghanistan, and confront those responsible from politics, the army and industry with their research. The investigative documentary reveals how far privatization has already progressed, how close the links to the arms industry are and what fatal consequences these entanglements could have in the future.

- Filmmaker Benjamin Rost poetically portrays three men who illegally search a diamond field for the precious stones that will change their lives forever. In this way, a piece of South African life unfolds. The rubble field where it all takes place is on the edge of the desert, bordering the ocean. It has been torn up like a field by the many excavators and machines that have dug up the soil here for European companies for decades. Underneath, deep underground, still lie the remains of the purest diamonds in the world. For some years now, the only reminder of these glorious days of the diamond business has been a fence that shakes in the wind and a warning sign: Do not enter. The area here is considered one of the poorest in South Africa, with the highest unemployment in the country. The first dozen "diamond diggers" quickly grew into thousands, so that the understaffed police in this desert wasteland could no longer take action. Day and night, they have been digging with bare hands for the tiny stones for almost two years now: a new diamond rush in South Africa that has spread like wildfire along the west coast. It should also help the former drug addict Vianey to a better life and revives the dream of Nelson Mandela in the homeless chef Patrick. Only diamond diver George, who was once a millionaire, hangs barefoot on the beach after his memories of the good old days. The film not only shows the individual fates of these men on the so-called "Digging Fields". It traces a universal feeling that is just as valid in Europe as on the other side of the globe: the search for happiness. The film shows how important hope is in order to survive in this inhospitable desert. "In the Pursuit of Happiness" not only shows the fates of these men on the so-called "Digging Fields" . The film also traces a universal feeling that is just as valid for us in Europe as it is on the other side of the globe: the search for happiness.

- Two widely separated life and work stories, that of the boxing trainer Ulli Wegner and that of the documentary film director Heinz Brinkmann, are narratively connected in a large arc by the director's death from cancer before completion of the film: "Until the Last Round". The central narrative remains the development and success story of the man Ulli Wegner, who becomes a popular coaching legend in boxing and over a lifetime also a contemporary witness of German history after World War II. In the GDR Wegner underwent a comprehensive training as a trainer in socialist-influenced competitive sports always success-oriented. Victory for the socialist state of the GDR was his mission and goal. With the German reunification, the victories of his protege's are combined with his own personal ambition to always be the best, to create something special in his life. He owes the success of more than 100 world champion titles in professional boxing to his mental and psychological as well as to his technical skills acquired in the GDR. Together with his wife Margret, Ulli Wegner can enjoy the media glamour and the prosperity of the West. The Heringsdorfer Heinz Brinkmann, who feels mentally connected with the Pomeranian Wegner, the fight against cancer works in its quiet way counterpoint. In the final rounds, both become friends.

The film tells the story of citizens of the city of Zug who have managed to become very rich: With consistent tax cuts, they have transformed their little town into one of the world's most important tax havens. Swiss filmmaker Luzia Schmid's childhood was marked by this foolhardy rise, and its main protagonists were part of her everyday life: It is a personal economic film from the filmmaker's perspective, telling how Zug became one of the largest commodity trading centers in the world. The starting point is the close circle of her family: the father, the trustee, the sister, the politician. They are joined by friends and contemporary witnesses. Likeable people who enjoyed it and still profit from it today. But with success came problems: Dubious business lawyers and commodity traders moved into the Swiss idyll. And exploited states like Zambia from here. Zug became a symbolic place for the great injustices of this world. And a surprisingly large number of Zug residents live well with it. The director, as a first-person narrator, traces this power of displacement. She searches for answers in the field of tension between morality and motivation and locates Zug in the international tax competition, in which her adopted country, Germany, also plays a leading role. But the promise of a constantly growing economy - inherent in tax competition - only succeeds at the expense of others.
