Grace is called away from work to the school where her oldest, Quentin, has been in a fight. As they talk, she realizes that he has known about his father's abuse. Grace's friend introduces her to the pharmacist.
- Grace and Nadine take a road trip to Paris, Texas to see Grace's eccentric and worldly Aunt Vivian.
- A deluge of rain causes flooding, which brings difficult situations. Jimmy visits and ends up getting stuck at Grace's house, while Russell runs out into the storm to get Faith's insulin.

- Grace goes on a blind date with a man who admits that the shirt he's wearing was 'found' on top of the neighbour's trash. His repeated demonstrations of frugality wear Grace down. Meanwhile, Libby is having a difficult time relating to her baby brother.
- Grace gets promoted to supervisor at the refinery to the dismay of some of her male co-workers. When Grace tells her ex-husband that Quentin can't spend the summer with him, Quentin runs away from home and ends up on Ryan's front stoop.
- Libby and Sam are playing house and they have two different ideas of how to do that. Sam tells Libby they must kiss and Sam's mother catches them. Grace's car is finally done for and she goes to the used car lot to buy another, 'less old' one. Grace gets the price she wants.
- Grace deals with Quinton's denial of her when in public, and her boss's daughter Julia, who is pregnant, visiting and trying to get the father to just talk with his daughter.
- Emmet and Jean come to watch the kids while Grace and Rick go to St. Louis for the weekend. One her way out the door, Grace finds out that Emmet is going off for the weekend also. The hotel has only adult movies on demand and not the game he wants to see. They end up in a gay sports bar, to Rick's embarrassment. Then, they see Emmet in the same bar.
- Jean is helping decorate the Christmas tree when she receives a phone call. Emmet has had a heart attack and died. Emmet's lover comes to the wake and loudly proclaims their mutual love.
- Jean meets a man with whom she is keeping casual company. Grace encourages her, glad to see her getting out. Jean is 'done with him' until Grace pushes harder. Then, Rick discovers him smoking marijuana in the restroom.
- Grace is bumped up to permanent worker status, so is now eligible for benefits. It also involves working the night shift. Russell, Nadine and Wade take turns babysitting. But Grace misses reading them stories, tucking them in and will she also miss Libby's school program?
- Grace has a talk with Quentin's teacher and, while the teacher has concerns about Quentin, it seems she has family issues also. Grace finds Quentin up on the roof and he says he used to go there when Grace and his father fought. Now he goes there to do some thinking. The men discover what he does up there.
- Jimmy wins a big settlement after falling down the stairs and Grace needs it because he hasn't been paying child support. A law student gets permission to take her case and all they have to do it show that Jimmy hasn't paid. Grace is given 15 seconds to make her case.
- Grace takes the kids camping, but when Quentin pushes a little girl in a neighboring camp, she finds out that Jimmy has told Quentin that Grace hit him during their marriage.
- Grace receives a letter from her college-aged son Matthew, that she gave up for adoption when she was a teenager. They later meet and Grace finds Matthew has several misconceptions and questions about her.
- Jimmy visits, bringing his girlfriend Ramona. When Jimmy loses his temper she goes to Grace for advice. Grace also deals with a fight between Nadine and Wade, and problems with credit at her local grocery store.
- When the oil refinery has an explosion, Grace finds that Quinton and Libby just aren't interested that she could have died. Meanwhile, Grace takes a temporary job as a secretary at the refinery and realizes it's not her forte.
- Russell asks Grace to go with him to a a real estate seminar, Grace thinks it is a scam but goes with the intention of writing a story about it for the local paper.
- There's a new guy at work who's interested in Grace. Grace runs into Vickie at the pharmacy and she later comes to Grace for help. Wade asks Russell for advice about having a baby. Grace takes a chance on the new guy.
- Grace sends a story to the local paper and is thrilled when she is told they will print it. She later finds they have heavily edited the story. Quentin tells Grace he wants to live with Jimmy and Jimmy agrees it is a good idea. Grace relents for a two week period, but Jimmy brings Quentin back after only one week, saying he isn't cut out for full time fathering.
- Grace is forced to deal with her depressed ex-mother in law during the holidays, and she also receives an invitation from Dougie, and decides to attend a holiday party with him.
- Ryan asks Grace to go to Chicago with him for the weekend. He misses the flight due to a freak accident, so they decide to spend the night at his place. Grace tells him a story her father told her about finding a piece of a shooting star and he brings her a meteorite to wish on.
- Grace wins two tickets to the opera and goes alone when she can't find someone to go with her. There she meets a tall, dark stranger she believes was a set up by Nadine. She later meets up with Russell to visit his father.
- A new woman is brought into Grace's crew but is transferred back to her old crew when she complains about the men's language. Nadine and Wade have fertility problems.
- Libby tells Grace her friend's mom is the 'best mom ever' and putting her daughter in a child's beauty pageant. Grace relents and says Libby can be in the pageant. Then the mother tells Grace that she doesn't have the 'breeding' to be pageant material. Now, to find a talent that Libby can showcase.
- Nadine confesses to Grace that she wants to have a baby. Wade tells Grace he hates his job. Bill's wife tells Grace she knows Bill has been going to the track and has lost their savings.
- Grace takes time to rekindle with her ex due to the refinery explosion. Nadine and Wade may be expecting their first child.

- Quentin is obvious in his dislike for Ryan. Quentin orders a heart-shaped pizza for Grace, unaware that she has plans with Ryan. Feeling awkward, Ryan leaves. Faith and Russell break up. Nadine and Wade find baby-making to be a chore.
- Jimmy brings the Kelly clan over to Grace's house for Thanksgiving after Libby feels ignored by Jimmy. Wade and Nadine decide to date.
- Rick gets two tickets to see an author Grace enjoys, but it's Halloween and Grace says she can't go. Quentin is banned from Halloween, Libby stains her costume, a troubled neighbor comes to complain. Jean expertly gets rid of the neighbor and takes over the celebration so Grace can do something for herself. Grace performs at a coffeehouse, in costume.
- Grace realizes Wade and Nadine are having sex when she finds a pair of his boxers in her garage. Grace slips on Wade's icy property, and at Wade's insistence, sees a physical therapist. Wade accuses Grace of drawing out the sessions when he finds out she is attracted to Travis, the therapist. Grace later decides to date Travis.
- Grace's sister Faith collapses at work, so Russell and Grace rush to Alabama. Upon her release from the hospital, they bring her for a Christmas visit. Faith is having an affair and Grace invites her to move closer.
- Wade is watching the movers unpack the truck of the new neighbors and falls in love with them through their possessions. Jean pulls a gun on them, Jimmy mistakes them for the plumber.
- Grace's hot water heater isn't working and since the landlord says it will be expensive to fix, he declares it not broken. Grace approaches her boss to ask for an advance for a water heater, but learns, due to corporate downsizing, that she is being demoted. That means her weekly pay will be cut by $147.25. Grace goes to plead her case to the executive in charge and finds out her position was not eliminated, it was the job of her boss that was eliminated so her boss took her job.
- Grace is spending one night a week answering phones at the crisis center. Soon, 'Chris' (as she identifies herself) is becoming drawn in by a frequent caller 'Ron' who is being tempted to go back to drinking. She finds herself agreeing to meet him at a bar; they are both astonished to recognize each other.
- Grace goes to a local ballgame then ends up in a bar, where she meets one of the players and begins dating him.
- The parents at Libby's school are petitioning to have the janitor fired because he has HIV. Grace thinks firing him is not the right thing to do and goes to the meeting to speak and defend him.
- Grace's sisters come to visit for her birthday.
- Quentin ends up in a fight with a boy after using a racial slur and Grace is horrified. At the plant, John decides to retire and the gang throws him a party.

- Wade and Nadine find out at the fertility clinic that there is a problem with her eggs so they ask Grace if she'll donate hers. Her decision really affects their friendship. Do Wade and Nadine really want a baby?
- Emmet is off with his buddies for Thanksgiving and Jean makes a big show of letting everyone that she will be all alone, forcing Grace to invite her. Rick is invited, too, and Grace asks him to be nice to Jean. Rick and Jean are getting along so well that it makes Grace mad. Wade helps her to see that she has come to expect chaos and without it she's not happy.
- Grace posts an ad in the pharmacy for a sitter for Patrick. Jean comes to watch him the first day and asks why Grace doesn't put him in daycare. Grace explains that the only daycare she can afford won't take Patrick because he's not toilet trained. Grace decides to demand a company daycare center.
- Jimmy gets a new job that requires him to move to Ohio. Grace goes to a dinner of businessmen with Russell and he has her bring her own car (in case he gets lucky). Fred from Fred's Copy down on Third talks to Grace while Russell is circulating and follows her to her car, trying to convince her to go back to his place. A couple other men hear the commotion and ask if she needs help. She gets a little braver and makes sure they all know who it is and where his business is.
- Grace's first child Matthew visits in order to get to know Grace's other kids better. When Quentin treats him badly, Grace asks Matthew to step into another room so she can speak to Quentin alone. Matthew then realizes he's mad at Grace for giving him up and storms out, but comes back later so they can work things out.
- Grace finds Matthew's father in Joplin. Despite Matthew's enthusiasm, Grace wants to inform the father herself. The professor is not interested in meeting his son.
- Grace speaks to Nadine about the Travis's controlling nature and how she feels it might be a problem she needs to work on for herself. Grace and Travis break up, but for differing reasons. At the refinery, Vic thinks his wife is cheating on him.

- Grace takes a road trip to Memphis with Faith and Russell in order to see her little sister Evie get married to a man who ends up hitting on Grace. Along the way she meets an enigmatic stranger who seems to know things about Grace and her visit.
- Nadine talks Grace into going to a dance put on by The Second Time Around group, for divorced and widowed persons. Grace runs into, and is asked out by, Nadine's first ex-husband. Nadine and Wade invite the couple to dinner.
- Grace realizes that she and Ben never talk about anything of importance. She is also seeing Rick and they all discuss whether she should tell each of them about the other one. Rick asks Grace to stop seeing Ben and Quentin catches Grace and Rick kissing.
- Quentin's shy soccer coach finally asks Grace out and Kurt calls and also asks her out. While at the pharmacy, Grace runs into Ryan, who also asks her out. Ray, the pizza delivery guy asks her out. Grace and Nadine try to figure out what all these guys have in common and we see the coach, Ryan, Ray and Jimmy at an AA meeting.
- Grace's father in law, Emmett, is admitted to the hospital with chest pains and finds he has to have bypass surgery. Wade tells Nadine it's okay if they can't have kids, he'd be just as happy adopting.
- Grace and Rick are coming home from a date and Grace is wondering why they haven't had sex yet. A car crosses their path and they crash. Feeling lucky to be alive, they do have sex. Jean brings the kids home early the next morning and she catches Rick still there. The next day, Grace drops the kids at Jean's and Rick cooks dinner before they quickly halt and go upstairs. The second time turns out to be not as enjoyable as the first time.
- Grace is taking a writing class at the local college. The professor is not kind or especially helpful. Grace doesn't know if she wants to go back. Grace defends her writing to the teacher and walks out.
- Grace and Rick are at his place kissing when a young woman enters through the front door. It's Rick's daughter, Amy, who has apparently seen many similar scenes and is quite rude to both of them. Later she volunteers to watch Libby and Patrick while Grace and Rick go out to buy a dress to wear to the symphony. While they're gone, Amy dyes Libby's hair dark like her own. This causes a fight between Grace and Rick, with Rick telling Grace not to tell him how to raise his children.
- One of the laid-off employees comes to the refinery and holds Grace's crew hostage, while making demands of the company. During the ensuing discussions, the men discover that Grace is dating Rick.
- Matthew calls Grace after he's arrested for running naked through a women's rights protest. Grace tells him she's upset because he trivialized their event. Matthew's adoptive mother comes to see Grace over the issue.
- Grace goes over to Nadine's and finds her waiting for a call from the doctor. She took a home pregnancy test and is waiting for the doctor to confirm or contest. The doctor calls, talks to Grace and confirms Nadine is finally pregnant. Grace is feeling hurt that Nadine only wants to do things with Wade now and Nadine says some hurtful things, too.
- Sam, friend from across the street always seems to be visiting the Kelly's house. We know he's had a long-time crush on Grace and his mother appears to be the new June Cleaver, but is there something else going on?

- Grace and John arrange for a temporary job for Rick at the refinery. Everybody's giving Rick a hard time at work because he used to be the boss. Rick leaves work, gets drunk, goes to Grace's, and proposes.
- There's a toxic spill at the refinery but Grace, who hasn't been checked out and cleared, leaves to find Quentin who's run away from home. On the way home, Grace finds herself feeling woozy and then finds herself in an alien diner where she talks to her late father.
- There is a gas leak at Grace's, which the landlord says will take two weeks to fix. Rick invites them all to come and stay with him. By the time Grace and the kids are leaving, more layoffs come to the refinery, but this time it's Rick who loses his job. When he realizes that Grace is leaving, he thinks it's because she was interested in his money.
- Everyone's trying to demonstrate how independent he/she is. Grace wants the landlord to build a bedroom for Quentin in the basement. Evie, newly married to a business owner, offers to pay to have the work done. Rick says she should have asked him for the money. Russell is frustrated with his father's late hours and Floyd is thinking of getting his own place. Grace is afraid to be dependent because she remembers the days of being dependent on Jimmy.
