- The film is inspired by the Pieta sculpture of Michelangelo in Rome. The image has become a universally recognized symbol of human suffering and lamentation. In Narthex the beholder sees a death scene on the bottom of a swimming pool. Water symbolizes baptism, resurrection of the dead, destroying forces and upward supporting forces. Wiersma filmed with a vertical frame. At the top of the frame we see the water surface, at the bottom we see the drama. The vertical frame creates a constricted perception by the beholder. The film ends with a shot inspired by the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer, Christo Redentor. The pose of a spring board diver shows a similar body posture. Narthex is an architectural term. The Narthex is the space between the holy part of a church and the outside world. Wiersma touches religious and human themes: coping with death, mourning and victory over death.
