- 1945 Prague. Citizens join fights actively against a tank brigade heading near the city. Thy are organizing a resistance against the Germans.
- Inspector Brumpby (Jaroslav Marvan) and the young crime reporter Allan Pinkerton (Vít Olmer) attend wedding of Sir Hannibal Morris (Oldrich Nový) with beautiful Clarence (Kveta Fialová). After the ceremony, Clarence's ex-husband, criminal Manuel Diaz (Waldemar Matuska), who was believed dead, shows up in her room. He wants to get his hands on Clarence and, most importantly, on the money she would inherit in the eventuality of her new husband's death. Diaz makes attempts on Hannibal's life. He knows his way about an underground labyrinth in the château and the traps he sets up for Hannibal seem to work, since Hannibal is apparently found dead after an explosion in the labyrinth, after which his body vanishes. The inspector tries to solve the countless mysteries. In this, he is joined by Allan, always ahead of the man of the law in his estimation and judgment of the situation.

- The heroes of this film are the courageous schoolgirl Magda, the lying, messy Jarmila and the caring boy Ludvík. Each narrative seeks to express the child's view of the world.
- Three young employees of Spofana Company, Zdenek, his girlfriend Vera Novotná and their friend Vera Matousková were rewarded for excellent work by a vacation in the mountain resort of Tatranská Lomnica. The Prague Transport Company controller Gustav Andel (Jaroslav Marvan) also travels to the same destination as a reward. He does not know yet Vera, future wife of his son Mirek, and has decided to secretly check her behaviour in the absence of her fiancée. By mistake he considers Vera Novotná to be his son's girlfriend, and so his investigations cause him plenty of embarrassments.
- The bridegroom Jan Kaspar is an officer in the Klement Gottwald's Nová Hut rolling-mill. After bidding farewell to his freedom, he accidentally takes a sip from the bottle of tetrachlore which he stores at home. He disregards the dizziness, but the next day, he faints in the factory and has a brain concussion. During her regular tests, doctor Dudková is shocked by a high percentage of residual nitrogen found in Kaspar's blood. Doctor Bohácek, with whom Dudková consults, thinks that it is a liver disease and informs the head physician Filip. The doctors know nothing about tetrachlore and are in the dark about the case. Despite that, they immediately start to fight for Kaspar's life and their struggle consequently affects their personal lives.
- "Grandmother" is a highly romanticized autobiographical novel by a Czech 19th century writer, Bozena Nemcova. It's a classical, compulsory reading in Czech schools, about a wise, working-class woman, happier in her simplicity and good heart than the nobles whom she serves.
- The rise and fall of an aristocratic Prague family is the focus of this fine example of Czech filmmaking during the Nazi Occupation. A mill owner who hopes to arrange a marriage between his daughter and a wealthy American of Czech origin invests all his money in turbines to power his mill.
- Mr. Novák, a clerk at the insurance company, cares only about his job. Even the social changes in February 1948 leave him indifferent. He only becomes aware of them when the insurance company is closed down. He has to make a decision: either retire or go to work in a factory.
- The central character of the film is a young woman who, out of a desire for a better life, marries into the farm. Later, however, she searches for a way to free herself from the captivity of her property. Farm has marked both Floris and his father with his hatred of people. This is why they plot against the cooperative, why they hate each other, and why Floris eventually murders his father. In his frenzied hatred, he does not hesitate to put even Frona's life in danger.
- Cooperative members are harvesting crops, trying to get new water piping installed and preparing to plough away the field boundaries in autumn. Local kulak Voznica (Vladimír Repa) doesn't like any of this so he forces sexton Kodýtek (Vlasta Burian) to help him sabotage their efforts.
