Children dancing

Warning: Spoilers
"Italienischer Bauerntanz" or "Bauerntanz zweier Kinder" is a 35-second short film from over 120 years ago. As this one was made in 1895, it should not be a surprise to anybody that it is a black-and-white silent film. It was done by the Brothers Skladanowsky, the first filmmakers from Germany and it shows us a boy and girl dancing enthusiastically. It is a bit contagious, therefore I was generous with my rating. The kids' names are Ploetz and Larella apparently. This very short film is part of the Skladanowsky film collection named "Wintergartenprogramm" and the first film depicted in there, so it may very well be their first work ever. All in all, worth checking out for fans of the silent days, but everybody else can skip it.

Kids Jumping Around

That's pretty much what this movie is: two children who are suppose to be dancing an Italian folk dance for pioneering German film producer-director-cameraman-inventor Max Skladanowsky and his brother Emil.

There are a bunch of people with good claims towards inventing the movies as we know them. There's the Lumieres in France, and Edison's lab in the US under the supervision of J. Stuart Blackton. Max Skladanowsky is Germany's entry in the race; his Bioscop was used to display moving pictures to an audience on November 1, 1895, more than a month earlier than the Lumieres' first show in Paris. He lost interest and by the start of the new century was back to work in two allied fields: magic lanterns and flip books. He died in 1939, 76 years old.
