The twelve-minute film represents a significant step in movie making, being one of the first "narrative" movies of significant length. For the first time in movie making history-not that it was THAT long of a "history"-new techniques were used in filmmaking in the attempt to add interest to the primitive one reel movie. Limited camera movement, scene editing, and different cuts are some of these breakthrough methods. Filled from beginning to end with suspense, action, and... trains, it is a win all the way around for all audiences. The opening scene centers on four bandits who subdue a station agent mercilessly (to keep him from sending out an alarm) and then climb aboard a train when it stops to take on water. Two of the bandits precede to the mail car, clearly up to no good, hungry for the riches and valuables that would soon be theirs by killing the agent and making off with the loot. The others take care of the engineer and his fireman. One can imagine what the early audiences must have thought when one of the bandits suddenly throws the fireman off of the train. This was the first display of someone causing major physical harm to another human being. The cutting from the live action with the bandit and the fireman to the obvious straw dummy was quite innovative for the time. The train then comes to a screeching halt (even though you can't hear it, since this is a silent film). The bandits then line up the passengers and rob them. I'm sure that they informed the passengers of the "Don't anybody move!" policy, but it would be more than just a little bit boring if everyone did as they were told, so one soul was taken as he tries to escape from the fiends. They then ride the engine down the tracks to their waiting horses. Meanwhile the town folk are alerted by the rescued station agent at a local hoedown (this movie was the first to show gunfire that made a human target "dance" during the hoedown scene) and form a posse to go after the robbers. What follows is a great little chase scene and the final showdown between the good guys and the bad guys who light up the area in a vicious, brutal gunfight (missing the horses because, that would just be gruesome), where you know who get what's coming to them. The closing shot of the gang leader emptying his six shooter at the audience is perhaps one of the most famous shots in cinematic history. One can only imagine the edgy effect that it must have had on the early audiences that were "shot at". In conclusion, the fourteen-scene film set the stage for Western clichés and for cinema as a whole. It gives everyone a great respect not only for what we can enjoy now, but for the technology that was used then. It's totally almost as good as Transformers 2, and it deserves two thumbs up.
