An Entertaining Variation On a Familiar Setup
Snow Leopard7 March 2005
This short Tom Mix feature takes the familiar setup of a romantic triangle, and gives it an entertaining twist, to make for a pleasant, light-hearted movie. Mix also gets to do a couple of rope tricks during the course of the action. There is also some humor from the title cards which, though sometimes corny, are often amusing.

Mix plays one of a pair of cowhands who, though close friends, are in love with the same girl. While the early scenes are little different from those in many other similar stories, soon the movie takes a slightly different direction, resolving the situation in comic western style, with an extra little twist along the way.

While nothing substantial, "Roping a Bride" works well as light entertainment.

Mixing humor with romance and other western antics!
JohnHowardReid25 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Cast: Tom Mix (himself), Sid Jordan (Dick), Goldie Colwell (Vera), Roy Watson (Bill Bush), Inez Walker (Mrs. Bush), C.W. Bachman (Vera's dad).

Director: Tom Mix. Story and screenplay: E. Lynn Summers. Producer: William Nicholas. Executive producer: W.N. Selig.

Copyright 26 January 1915 by Selig Polyscope Co. U.S, release: 9 February 1915. 1 reel. 11 minutes. Available on a quite watchable Alpha DVD coupled with "Straight Shooting".

SYNOPSIS: Tom and Sid are cowboy rivals for the hand of the lovely Goldie, a good horsewoman but a lousy house-keeper. They consult a mutual friend, Roy Watson, a rancher, who suggests a roping contest.

COMMENT: A couple of very amusing sub-titles add to the fun of this modest but engaging one-reeler, pleasingly acted by all concerned and competently directed by none other than Tom Mix himself. Admittedly, Mix doesn't move his camera even so much as a single inch, but that was pretty standard for early 1915. And I warn you that the ladies are not going to like this movie. In one sub-titled snipe, our fetching heroine is labeled as a poor housekeeper who couldn't prepare a simple meal in under two or three hours! Or maybe it was four or five?

There is much padding
deickemeyer21 September 2019
The story told here is of the slightest, and in lieu of incidents advancing the plot there is much padding. Rivals for the hand of a girl determine to settle possession by a roping contest. Apparently the young woman accedes to the plan, but in the end she dismisses both of the suitors. Scenes are laid in the West. The Selig sub-title writer introduces the word "rivaltry." - The Moving Picture World, February 27, 1915
