- An unusual story about the crossing paths of the poor Italian family of sculptor Giovanni (Lon Chaney) and reckless American millionaire, Cyrus Kirkham (Gilmore Hammond). Louise Lovely plays two parts: Giovanni's wife Leonita, who comes to grief when Cyrus falls in love with her; and Giovanni's daughter Elisa, whose beauty brings a horrific resolution to the two families' woes.—Camille Scaysbrook <[the_globe@hotmail.com]>
- While cruising on his yacht on the Mediterranean, dissolute American millionaire Cyrus Kirkham sees a dancing girl whom he covets, kidnaps, and takes on board his yacht. To escape his unwelcome attentions, the girl jumps overboard and is drowned. Her husband determines to have revenge, and he goes to America with his baby daughter and his mother. Giovanni is a molder of cheap miniature statuettes, and as he passes through the streets selling his wares, he keeps constant lookout for Kirkham. He finally locates him at his home. Kirkham has married a society lady who devotes her time to charity work and has founded a mission house in the Italian quarter; frequenters of it are Giovanni's mother and his daughter Elisa. Among Kirkham's dissolute companions is Burton Armitage, who has befriended struggling young artist Paul Winston, who found on the street an Italian girl who posed for him, but once the picture was finished he lost all trace of her. While calling upon Mrs. Kirkham at the mission house he finds his lost model in Giovanni's daughter and prevails upon her to resume sittings for him. Mrs. Kirkham gives Elisa's grandmother Rosa her own card as assurance that she will be responsible for Elisa's care; Rosa brings this card home to Giovanni, who takes one look and determines what form his vengeance shall take. He hires a gang of thugs to kidnap Mrs. Kirkham, then he goes to Kirkham to demand ransom. The plan is foiled by Winston's arrival at the mission house just as Mrs. Kirkham is being kidnapped; he follows and calls the police. They capture the gang and liberate Mrs. Kirkham. Meanwhile, Elisa has been enticed by trickery to Kirkham's house, where a party given by Kirkham to his dissolute companions is going on. Giovanni arrives at the Kirkham home during this party. When Kirkham beholds Giovanni, the shock of fright so effects his heart that he drops dead. Giovanni, now wildly aroused for further vengeance, dashes upstairs to where the party is being held on the gaily-lit roof. Here Giovanni beholds his daughter dancing, and the vivid recollections of her mother's tragic death quite unbalances his mind, and he jumps from the roof and is killed. These two sudden deaths clear the way for a happy ending to the story.—Moving Picture World synopsis
