This film was produced in 1917 and screened that December in a 9-real version at the Aeolian Hall in New York City. Apparently, no subsequent screening or general release of the 9-reel version was undertaken that year. In September 1920 the C.B.C. Film Sales Corp. announced that "The Victim" would be its first release under the state rights system. Jack Cohen was hired at that time to title and re-edit the film down to 6 reels.
