The Secret Gift (1920) - Lost Silent Film
PamelaShort29 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Two young men from Holland, Jan Saxe ( Lee Kohlmar ) and Peter Harlingen ( Rudolph Christians ) befriend orphan Bertha Kruger ( Doris Baker ) while travelling to America, and they both love the young girl. Bertha has come to America to live with her blind Aunt Sophie ( Jennie Lee ) and when Jan secretly raises $500 for an operation to restore her aunt's sight, Bertha marries Peter, believing that he was the donor of the "secret gift." Twenty years later, Bertha dies and Peter has become a successful businessman, while Jan attains contentment as a watchmaker. Peter's daughter Winnie ( Gladys Walton ) often visits her Uncle Jan's shop where she meets and falls in love with Larry ( William Fairbanks ) a young man whom Jan has helped since boyhood. Winnie's father desires her to marry Sydney Ullman ( Carl Gerard ) who is the son of a wealthy business associate. Jan disapproves of Peter's plan and after much quarrelling, finally Peter realizes that it would be better for his daughter to marry for love rather than money.

This drama was Gladys Walton's fourth silent film, produced by the Universal Film Manufacturing Company. Tragically it remains on the long list of lost silent films.
