- Elsa Melton lives with her husband Jimmy on the desolate island of Rapia, in the South Seas. Jimmy is assistant manager of the trading station. Elsa is disillusioned with island life. McMasters, who is the manager of the station, has his eyes on Elsa. After Elsa and Jimmy have an argument, Jimmy sets off on a short sea trip, but is caught in a typhoon. McMasters pursues Elsa. But she escapes to the beach, where she passes out. There she is found by Philip Hichens, a wealthy yachtsman. Hichens takes Elsa to his yacht, but despite his kind treatment of her, he has designs on her. He gives Elsa a fake radio report saying Jimmy was drowned. Not wanting to return to the island, Elsa agrees to go to San Francisco with Hichens. Meanwhile, Jimmy, who has emerged safely from the storm, returns to Rapia and learns that Elsa has departed with someone else. He vows to kill her if she returns. Hichens proposes to Elsa, and she accepts with the condition that she will consummate the marriage when she is ready. The pair are married aboard the yacht. They stop off at Honolulu, then go to San Francisco. Eventually Elsa becomes disillusioned with the marriage, and Hichens tells her their marriage was a fake, and the radio report was a fake.
Elsa insists Hichens take her to her home in Australia where she can forget everything. But they pass near Rapia and see Jimmy's boat going out. Thinking he is not on the island, Elsa goes ashore for one last look, but finds Jimmy, who was not on the boat. Jimmy's assistant recognizes Hichens as the lout who seduced his wife and caused her death. During a struggle with Hichens, Jimmy shoots him in the arm. Hichens flees to the beach, pursued by the two men. He tries to swim to his yacht, but is killed by a shark. Jimmy and Elsa are reconciled.
