Light but fun western with good climax
Report from 2006 Cinesation: A HERO ON HORSEBACK (***) Missing its opening titles, this c. 1927 western was billed as "Mystery Hoot Gibson Title"; if this is the actual title (the character name, Bill Garford, matches on the IMDb), it doesn't give much more hint of the actual tone of the film, which is so breezy it nearly blows away with the tumbleweeds until a genuinely impressive action climax. Hoot comes into possession of a bank, uses it to lend his pals money which he promptly wins back from them at faro, then has to catch the dastardly head teller when he steals the money for real; along the way it's spotted with gag lines like "Gals are like oil cans-- you got to squeeze 'em to make 'em work." Light but fun, I'm eager to see more of these Hoots.
