• Francisco Delfino 'Pancho' : Señor, we Californians have never asked anything of your people. You conquered us. But, understand, please, that our customs and manners, our women and our land, still belong to us.

  Judge Travers : Is that so? Well, let me tell you this is the United States you're in now. There aren't anymore Californians. There are only Americans - and foreigners!

  Lupe : Oh, it is still very big.

• Francisco Delfino 'Pancho' : It is lovely. There on a maze of little islands, the Indians have their farms. The banks of the winding canals are lined with flowers. And tall Cypress trees cast their shadows on the water. All of Mexico City was like that, long before we Spanish came with our civilization on the ruins of their Aztec temples. At night there's music. Just picture yourself, Rosita, floating lazily along in one these little boats.

• Francisco Delfino 'Pancho' : I'm leaving again tomorrow.

  Dona Rosita Garcia : Leaving?

  Francisco Delfino 'Pancho' : Yes, I - I'm going north for my Uncle.

  Dona Rosita Garcia : But, you will return?

  Francisco Delfino 'Pancho' : Because of the anxiety in your voice, I shall burn up the highway in my eagerness to get back.

  Francisco Delfino 'Pancho' : I'm sorry. I'm not in search of romance today. I came here to deliver cattle.

  Francisco Delfino 'Pancho' : I wish I could. But, I love you too much. There's a price on my head and there isn't a Padre in all of California that would marry us.

  Dona Rosita Garcia : Then, take me anyway!

• Francisco Delfino 'Pancho' : Since I left here, I've learned many things. I've learned that I'm a foreigner, without any rights, that our people are being cheated, robbed of their lands and their homes. In the northern part of the state I've seen them driven out like dogs! With titles to their lands either stolen or destroyed.

  Dona Rosita Garcia : But, Pancho, such conditions cannot last. The American Government will not allow it. You must have patience.

  Francisco Delfino 'Pancho' : Patience? You wouldn't say that if you'd seen what I had.

• Francisco Delfino 'Pancho' : California is home. My home.

  Juan : Well, I don't feel that way about it. Not since the gringos got in here.

  Francisco Delfino 'Pancho' : The war is over Juan. We fought the Americanos a good fight. We lost it. We must be good losers.

• Juan : Every gringos hand will be raised against you now.
