Quotes

  • Ronald Petrie : Your dancing bewitched us.

Joan Marshall : May I too congratulate you.

Ling Moy : Ling Moy shall endeavor to deserve this praise.

  • Morloff : Princess, the Petries are neighbors of ours.

Ling Moy : Oh, the charming white house?

Ronald Petrie : Yes! The one next door. Now that you're free I hope we may see you often.

Ling Moy : I too dare hope for it.

  • Fu Manchu : My flower daughter.

Ling Moy : My honored father.

Fu Manchu : May your days be laughing songs. And may the blood of your father course warmly in your veins, for within the hour he will be gathered to his revered ancestors.

Ling Moy : No, no! I've only just found you, noble father.

Fu Manchu : [At a gesture from Fu Manchu, a gong sounds as servants pull back a curtain to reveal a dragon on the wall]  The emblem of the great house of Fu! As a child you cried yourself to sleep over its tragic fairy story. Know at last, my daughter, the story is true! The mother and brother, murdered by a Petrie, were yours. Yours is the noble house of Fu.

    Ling Moy : Then, you?

Fu Manchu : I, your father, am Fu Manchu.

Ling Moy : [She recoils, then embraces him as he totters]  Live, live, divine father!

Fu Manchu : Infamous father! I sent you away, into the occidental world, to keep you from me until I should deserve your homage. But instead, you now witness my shame. Great spirit beyond, I come to you crawling in the dust.

[He kneels and attempts to genuflect]

Fu Manchu : Death lays his hands upon me, and my sacred work is unfinished. A Petrie still lives! The dishonor is burned upon my forehead.

  • Lu Chung : Master, let this unworthy slave finish the sacred work.

Fu Manchu : Only one of the house of Fu can redeem our honor.

Lu Chung : The blood is mine. The hate is mine. The vengeance shall be mine.

Fu Manchu : My flower daughter, the knife would wither your petal fingers. Gods of my ancestors, if only thou had granted me another son.

Lu Chung : Father, Father! I will be your son. I will be your son!

Fu Manchu : Swear, man-daughter, to deliver the soul of Ronald Petrie to me, to our ancestors.

    Ling Moy : I swear.

Fu Manchu : Sovereign spirit, you have answered my deepest prayer. I have a son!

  • Ronald Petrie : Ling Moy, these last two months have been very, very beautiful. And I'll have terrible regrets of your going. Will you?

    Ling Moy : Yes. Many.

Ronald Petrie : Then chuck everything and stay.

Ling Moy : If I stay, would my hair ever become golden curls and my skin ivory like Ronald's?

Ronald Petrie : Strange, I prefer yours. I shall never forget your hair and your eyes.

  • Ling Moy : The Chinese heart is very constant, Ron. It might be sadly wounded in one of your Western affairs.

  • Lu Chung : At least tell me, did he die in gratifying agony?

    Ling Moy : Lu Chung!

    [Morloff enters]

Ling Moy : Morloff, you are not permitted in my rooms.

Morloff : I take the liberty. I have just spoken to Petrie.

Lu Chung : Tcha! It was not done?

    Ling Moy : No.

Lu Chung : And you were with him?

Morloff : Why didn't you strike?

Ling Moy : I delayed, then heard a noise.

    Morloff : You love him!

Lu Chung : Remember, your father said that if you faltered...

Ling Moy : A weakness overcame me.

Lu Chung : It is wisely written, a stupid son is better than a crafty daughter.

Ling Moy : It is written. It is written. It should be written that a slave do reverence to a daughter of the light.

    Amah : Night prayers.

    [Ling Moy exits]

Lu Chung : I will burn this incense of repentance at her prayers. The Master provided it for the weak half of her, which is woman.

  • Ling Moy : If we were always together, would not Ah Kee grow weary of everlasting beauty?

Ah Kee : No! Being in paradise, he would grow fat as Buddha.

Ling Moy : If too fat, I should stop loving Ah Kee and only pray to him.

Ah Kee : Then, lean in hunger for more and more of your beauty.

  • Ah Kee : You will not kill him.

Ling Moy : By my sacred oath.

Ah Kee : Such an oath should never have been sworn. I tell you to release him.

Ling Moy : That cannot be.

Ah Kee : I warn you, I have a duty to Scotland Yard!

Ling Moy : Consider carefully before you leap to duty. If you try by force to leave, they will kill you. I do not want your blood on my hands.

Ah Kee : I cannot believe... but I see before me the madness of your house.

Ling Moy : Who shall search out these things, Ah Kee? Remember only that you love me, whoever I am.

Ah Kee : I have always hated the name of Fu Manchu.

Ling Moy : Forget that hate. I'm a woman. What is your hate against our love, against our eternal day together?

Ah Kee : It's the triumph of irony, that the only woman I have ever deeply loved, should be born of blood that I loathe.

Ling Moy : Look into my eyes, Ah Kee, and see us already sailing home to China, to the place you know, where the flowers smother the banks.

Ah Kee : Would you love a dishonored Ah Kee?

    Ling Moy : Forever.

Ah Kee : And I would forever despise him! Where is Petrie?

Ling Moy : You honest fool. It was not for myself, but for your own life that I played at love with you. You have chosen to die.

  • Fu Manchu : When they enter and shoot me down, you will thank them.

    Ling Moy : No!

Fu Manchu : You will thank them.

    [She nods]

Fu Manchu : And now, goodbye. My son, at such a time, should know how to say a courageous farewell.

Ling Moy : Goodbye, my honored father.

  • Sir Basil Courtney : [Standing over the body of Fu Manchu]  Ronald, thanks to Ah Kee, this is the last page in a terrible record.

Ling Moy : [In another room, Ling Moy genuflects in front of the family emblem]  Father... I will. I will!

  • Lu Chung : Perhaps Ling Moy divides her strength between duty and the advice of the heart.

Ling Moy : I'm giving him a beautiful illusion... which I shall crush.

Lu Chung : I pray that it is so. For one foot cannot stand on two boats.

  • Ling Moy : I can't kill him. I love him. I would rather kill myself.

    [She attempts to stab herself]

Lu Chung : [Lu Chung grabs her by the wrist]  Ha! A heartsick maiden would pour her blood upon love's altar. Death would be her release. Her petty torment would then be ended, and for the peace of this one miserable soul, the souls of her ancestors would forever burn in the fire of dishonor!

[He takes the knife and casts her aside]

Lu Chung : There is your place. Make peace with your father.

[He tosses the incense of repentance in a brazier and strikes a gong]

Ling Moy : Great father, give me understanding.

Fu Manchu : We are not resting. We shall never rest, until you kill him who remains. Ling Moy, you must... kill...

Ling Moy : Forgive me, majestic father! I will! I will!

  • Ling Moy : Your commendable fears may rest. It shall be accomplished.

Lu Chung : Your weakness of last evening has made the task quite difficult.

Ling Moy : It is necessary only to lure Petrie here.

Lu Chung : Pardon. Mr. Ah Kee is the obstacle. It was he whom I overpowered in the hallway last night, and from this moment on, Mr. Ah Kee and Petrie will be inseparable.

Ling Moy : And if I should lure Mr. Ah Kee away?

Lu Chung : Mm-hmm, that is a desired convenience.

Ling Moy : I have taken the oath of a son, but I shall again become the daughter of Fu Manchu - and a woman.

Lu Chung : When the branch quakes, the leaf shakes. Lu Cheng is bent to hear.

  • Lu Chung : [Lu Chung and Ling Moy regard the unconscious Ronald Petrie]  The fruit of your ingenious plan, Princess. Lu Chung is all admiration. This time, there will be no turning aside. And now, these clumsy fingers itch to dispose of Mr. Ah Kee.

Ling Moy : He will be put away until we are free of England, tonight.

Lu Chung : Permanently put away, of course.

Ling Moy : There is no need to kill.

Lu Chung : But we must ensure our escape.

Ling Moy : You may trust me for that.

    Lu Chung : But Princess...

Ling Moy : I have spoken!

  • Ling Moy : Heaven smiled upon our thanks.

Ah Kee : The greatness of the moment confuses Ah Kee.

Ling Moy : In this wine we pledge our troth.

Ah Kee : Ah Kee pledges his love and his life to Ling Moy... and in return she gives the counterfeit of love! Why did you poison the wine, and our love?

Ling Moy : It is an unworthy suspicion.

Ah Kee : What is Lu Chung doing here? What do you want with Petrie? Why is he lying senseless there?

Ah Kee : One answer will serve for everything: I am the daughter of Fu Manchu!

  • Ling Moy : Ronald. Ronald!

Ronald Petrie : Ling Moy! I was afraid. Oh, you're safe, thank goodness. What happened to me?

Ling Moy : Ling Moy rescued you... for her own.

Ronald Petrie : These lights, this... swimming in my brain. I've never seen you looking more softly beautiful.

[They are about to kiss when Joan screams]

    Joan Marshall : Ah! Ronnie!

Ronald Petrie : That's Joan! What's she doing here? What's happening to her?

    Joan Marshall : Ronnie! Ah!

Ronald Petrie : Answer me! What's happening to her?

Ling Moy : Can you think of her now?

Ronald Petrie : [Joan shrieks]  Why is she screaming like that?

Ling Moy : You refuse the gift of Ling Moy's heart. Very well. I will take you to her. Follow me.

Ronald Petrie : [Ling Moy and Ronald enter the cellar]  Joan, where are you?

[He sees Joan gagged and tied to a chair]

Ronald Petrie : Joan, what is it? Morloff, what's happening?

[He runs to Joan and pulls the gag from her mouth]

Ronald Petrie : Joan, my darling, what have they done to you?

Joan Marshall : Oh, it's Morloff!

    Ronald Petrie : Morloff!

[Ronald lunges at him and is restrained]

Ronald Petrie : What's the meaning of this, Ling Moy? Are you mad?

Ling Moy : Look into my eyes.

Ronald Petrie : Set her free, do you hear me?

    Ling Moy : Never.

Ronald Petrie : Ling Moy, I can't believe such loathsome jealousy in you.

Ling Moy : No love, now. No jealousy. Just merciless vengeance. You will understand when I tell you, Ronald Petrie: I am the daughter of Fu Manchu.

    Ronald Petrie : You!

Ling Moy : Your death tonight washes a stain from my house.

Ronald Petrie : All right. You can do what you like with me. But why do you hold Joan?

Ling Moy : Because you must have a thousand bitter tastes of death before you die. Tie him up.

[Ronald is bound to a chair next to Joan's]

Ling Moy : My vengeance is inspired tonight. You will first have the torture of seeing her beauty eaten slowly away by this hungry acid.

    [Joan screams and faints]

  • Lu Chung : It is ready.

Ling Moy : Morloff, revive her.

Joan Marshall : [Morloff uses smelling salts on Joan]  Oh, Ronnie!

[She looks around, sees the acid drip, and screams]

Ronald Petrie : Stop it, Ling Moy. In heaven's name, it's inhuman!

Joan Marshall : Oh Ronnie, don't let them do it!

Ronald Petrie : Anything but that! Anything but that!

Ling Moy : Stop! Ling Moy is merciful. Lao, untie his arm. The knife.

[Lao frees Petrie's right hand, the one nearer Joan, and places a knife in it]

    Ling Moy : Kill her.

    Ronald Petrie : No!

Joan Marshall : [Lu Chung positions her head beneath the acid drip]  Oh, please kill me, Ronnie! I'd rather die that way!

Ronald Petrie : [Lao guides the knife towards Joan]  Oh, no, no, no!

  • Rogers : Put up your hands!

    [He shoots Lu Chung]

Rogers : Stop, Ling Moy, stop!

    Rogers : I got him!

Ronald Petrie : Good man! Get Sir Basil. I'll take care of her.

Ling Moy : [They exchange a long look]  Let me surrender, in the spirit of the house of Fu.

    [She approaches him]

    Joan Marshall : Ronald!

    Rogers : Joan!

[Ling Moy tries to stab Ronald but is dealt a fatal gunshot by Ah Kee]
