Hedy Lamarr: 'Invention' and inventor on Turner Classic Movies (photo: Hedy Lamarr publicity shot ca. early '40s) Two Hedy Lamarr movies released during her heyday in the early '40s — Victor Fleming's Tortilla Flat (1942), co-starring Spencer Tracy and John Garfield, and King Vidor's H.M. Pulham, Esq. (1941), co-starring Robert Young and Ruth Hussey — will be broadcast on Turner Classic Movies on Wednesday, November 12, 2014, at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Pt, respectively. Best known as a glamorous Hollywood star (Ziegfeld Girl, White Cargo, Samson and Delilah), the Viennese-born Lamarr (née Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler), who would have turned 100 on November 9, was also an inventor: she co-developed and patented with composer George Antheil the concept of frequency hopping, currently known as spread-spectrum communications (or "spread-spectrum broadcasting"), which ultimately led to the evolution of wireless technology. Adrian Broner is an Inspiration ... so says a rep for the National Organization For the Homeless who tells TMZ Sports the boxing champ should be applauded for giving $1k to an unsuspecting homeless man earlier this week. Today for the International Women's History Centennial, a few "firsts" in movies. Add some in the comments if you want! I was 2/3rds done with this when I spotted Cinematical's "women in cinematic history but I wanted to make this a little more "first"y and loopier and obviously a bit more awardsy in nature since we play it like that.

First "Oprah" i.e. first woman in entertainment to basic control the universe: Mary Pickford was, like Florence Lawrence, famous by sight before actor names went in credits. Pickford was also known as "America's Sweetheart" a title that the media has virtually never tired of passing on down to newish popular actresses ever since. Mary was one of the founders of AMPAS and a studio founder too. She also commanded astronomical wealth.

Who took home prizes at this year's Kerrang! Awards have been announced at a gala ceremony held in London on August 3. Out of thirteen categories, Slipknot were the only band who walked home with more than one prize.
This rock band received two kudos at the annual awards. They were named Best International Band, winning over Green Day, Metallica, Madina Lake and Lamb of God. They also got Best Live Band title, beating Metallica, Enter Shikari, The Prodigy and Gallows.
"It feels really gratifying," frontman Corey Taylor, who co-hosted the event, told Kerrang! Magazine concerning their victories. "If there was ever a band that had to fight against controversy and misconception it was this band, and we're really starting to kind of get to the point where the respect is getting there - and rightly so. I can't think of many bands that have worked harder, and it really feels...

Everyone is a lot more ready for Zombieland than anything else, either that or they’re just covering up for Iron Man 2.
2:54- Jesse, Emma and Woody all show up on the panel.
2:55- “High time I got offered a zombie movie.” Woody Harrelson
2:56- Question: Zombieland, Adventureland, trilogy? “Yeah I wish” Jesse
2:57- “One of the hottest girls of Hall H!” Moderator on Emma Stone, kind of creepy hearing someone like him to say that.
2:58- Ready to show up a new scene where Eisenberg gets an unexpected visitor at his apartment in the form of the girl he has the hots for (too bad what she got bitten by).
3:02- “Great, I knew that people would actually see this one. It was fun running around in the house for three days throwing things at her.” Jesse on the scene just showed

Coldplay are newly crowned double winners at the 2008 Q Awards. The rock band were hailed Best Act in the World Today and their latest album "Viva la Vida" was given the honor as Best Album. "I don't think we're the best act in the room, let alone the world," Chris Martin, the band's frontman said.
The British event also saw winnings from Duffy, The Last Shadow Puppets, Keane, and Kaiser Chiefs. Duffy beat Adele and Santogold but she could not attend the event to receive the award. Puppets, which is a side project by Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner, picked up Best New Act. Turner appearing solo said, "Thank you very much. I understand it's voted by the readers so this means a lot of course. Unfortunately my partner couldn't be here because he had some trouble with the trains."
