- Village peasants gather in the snow as a carriage approaches. Indoors, a maid says that the arriving Rasputin, whom the villagers will be calling on for help, cured her sister. But her father asks, where is that sister now, and suggests that Rasputin has seduced her and other women. A bishop talks with other men of the church about Rasputin's behavior with these women. After being called inside to help and asked if he has performed miracles, Rasputin rides off.We next see him on a train with several of the religious officials. The scene switches to the palace. A woman fusses about her sick dog but Rasputin who is there pets the animal and it is cured. A montage follows of people talking about Rasputin, intercut with images of church buildings. In the palace, a little boy lingers in bed with a puppet, which he drops to the floor.He is the son of the Empress, who has been told about Rasputin so the healer is brought in. Rasputin talks to the child, Alioscha, telling him about Siberia where he is from and singing him a song.A smile crosses the boy's face and he is cured of his illness, they clap hands together. Later we see Alioscha working on a snowman outside. In a crowded building, Nina Ivanova comes in to see him.He is preoccupied with another woman but comes out to see her. After they start a couple of drinks together, the scene fades out on their intimacy. In the next scene we see a countess who is playing the piano for her admirer but when Rasputin comes for a visit he scoops her away. There is a party scene where Rasputin joins in the dancing with different women, as several officers look on suspiciously. A lieutenant and his colleague are playing pool when the officer is informed by a phone call that Rasputin has been with his girlfriend.The man tries to barge into the place where Rasputin is staying but a group of men stop him. The next scene involves the chief of police who has information regarding Rasputin. The Czar ,offered an incriminating photo, tears it up.When Rasputin comes in, the Czar advises him about these enemies and suggests he should go away. We are back to his village where peasants are enjoying themselves in a tavern.Rasputin enters, drinks, and joins the dancing which is accompanied by quick cutting.The father of the girl ,who Rasputin was accused of seducing earlier, attacks him and injures him. We see a mobilization poster for war, accompanied by the sound of drumming. Rasputin, recuperating in bed hears the sounds and his nurse tells him about the war. He asks her to write a message to the Czar against the war but the attending doctor crumples up the telegram message, attributing it to his patient's feverishness. We see a vision of battlefield crosses accompanied by more drumming. At the palace, where Rasputin is now back, the Czar speaks to officials.Rasputin tells the Empress it will be bad for the family if the war continues, and leaves. We see Alioscha with an array of toy soldiers and a drum which he plays.Rasputin tells the boy of using his influence to have a different officer put in charge. Three officers talk again about Rasputin and his involvement in politics.While a party goes on at a villa, they arrange to have his food and drink poisoned. Rasputin hears the sound of soldiers singing and goes to a window where he sees them marching through the snow. Invited to a separate get together in a downstairs room, he reiterates the need for peace while one of his hosts sings and plays a balalaika.Rasputin gets up and dances. While he is looking at a religious icon in the room, he is shot, with his back turned,by the officer .Rasputin cries out and falls.When the men come down though they are surprised to see him get up again.As he goes out in the snow he is shot four more times until he is finally dead. The film closes on a quiet and empty winter landscape.
