Not a knockout, but it goes the distance.

Max Schmeling remains a controversial figure. As the boxing champion of Germany (and then world champion) during Hitler's reign, there was naturally some tendency on the part of the Third Reich to use Schmeling as a symbol of the Aryan ubermensch. In 1936, Schmeling fought the undefeated Joe Louis. By Nazi standards, Louis was inferior twice over, as an American who was also a Negro. When Schmeling beat Louis by a knockout, there was great glee among Nazis (and Americans who sympathised with the Nazis). In 1938, Joe Louis turned the tables by beating Schmeling with a TKO in a rematch lasting two minutes.

Precisely where were Schmeling's sympathies? He certainly took advantage of his privileged position in Hitler's regime, yet apparently he resented being made the poster boy for Nazism, and reportedly he and Joe Louis respected each other personally. Schmeling enjoyed a long marriage to Austro-Hungarian actress Anny Ondra, who had a successful career in British silent films until the talkies revealed her accent.

'Knockout: A Young Girl, a Young Man' teams Schmeling and Ondra on screen. Interestingly, Schmeling's role is significantly larger and more prominent than Ondra's even though she's a professional actor and he isn't. Max Schmeling plays Max Breuer, a backstage electrician in a Berlin theatre. Ondra plays Marianne Pluemke, an aspiring actress who auditions at the theatre. When a surly burly masher gets fresh with the fraulein, Max intercedes ... leading to fisticuffs, until Max knocks the guy out. It turns out that the masher (Paul Samson-Körner) is Huetgen, a prizefighter. Max gets the sack for his troubles, but a fellow with the peculiar name Smidtchen (good performance by Otto Wernicke) offers to train Max at a boxing school in Hamburg.

SPOILERS COMING. Max comes back to Berlin and fights the British heavyweight champion, Hawkins (played by the very un-British Hans Schönrath). Does Max win the match? Does Max win the fraulein? Jawohl, mein liebchen!

This is Max's show all the way, and fans of Anny Ondra (are there any?) will be disappointed at how little she gets to do. Schmeling displays little talent for dramatics, but fortunately this film is scripted to play to his strong suit. Max throws plenty of punches in this movie, and receives quite a few as well. The climactic boxing match is exciting and well-edited. The scenes at the Hamburg boxing academy have the look of authenticity to me, though I admit I know very little about Hamburg boxing academies. Devotees of boxing, and of German culture in the 1930s (notwithstanding who was in charge) will find this film fascinating. But there's very little here to appeal to other tastes. Purely on the basis of what it set out to accomplish, I'll rate this movie 7 out of 10.

Finally this German classic made under the Nazi dictatorship, comes to the u.s.a changed from pal to 0 region n.t.s.c. By Germanwarfilms.com A digital print copy. First Die Deutsche Waschanau. Nothing but propaganda lies.A tribute to Horst Wessell. The Idiot died for his brown shirt cause.Poor Russian city Stalingrad was bombed , fortunately the Russians fled before the Nazi's came. The idiots who voted for the Nazi's have to give up half of their tobacco for the sake of their Nazi soldier boys.More lies.A 1955,possibly of a theatrical commercial of office typewriters and furniture introduce by Father Christmases ,the German would call Santa clause that, three elves in glorious A.g.f.a. color. Now the feature. What makes this feature in a way rare,is that in spite of making a small appearance in the big game, in glorious a.g.f.a color, this is the only full feature in which Max Schmelling is a star in this film. His wife actress Anny Ondry plays an aspiring actress and dancer. This was her first feature made under her own production company partner with Carl Lamac. In spite of the fact Max was anti Nazi and protected the children of a friend during the night of glass and helped Joe Lewis when he was broke,no corporate firm ,like Janus ,would ever touch this film.Nor Turner classic movies would ever broadcast this, unless Time Warner stopped being hypocritical about this, due to Adolph Hitler, although Time Warner has a little monopoly on some of the films of 33 and 45 in the home video market of Germany. Thank goodness for small on line services and alternate shops. It takes place in theater rehearsing for a theatrical revue, which included the emphasis of boxing. This could not of been Germany's answer to the prize fighter and the Lady ,1933, cause this movie was banned by Goebbels possibly because Max Baer was a top prize fighter in America. It's just coincidence.Fritz Odemar plays the theater theater director.A very young Hans Richter plays one of the technicians and a side kick of Max.Max plays a lighting technician in the theater. Anny is having trouble with her first day as a chorus girl and an introducer to the show. When Boxer Hutngen, plays by actual boxer Paul Samson Korner, starts harassing Miss Ondry, during the show,Max gets fired for defending her.Otto Wernicke is the head of a boxers club and sees' his fighting skills as a possible future fighter.Max stars getting better st it,but,Herman Meyer Falkow, the trainer wants British boxer Hawkins, played by 1928 Olympic boxer Hans Schonrath ,to win. So he tries to get Max seduced by Anni Markart, but that just does not work. Anny gets fired from her theatrical job,so max helps her to get a job as a secretary at the boxer club. After training, Otto still does not think he can be excellent. During the boxing challenger max keeps making mistakes and Otto gets skeptical but Anny tries o keep Otto at the event, to show him that he's winning champion.Max finally wins.Edith Mienhard plays the actress of the revue who bugs Max. 12/11/12
