Slow but sweet
Jim Tritten1 July 2002
Comic treatment of family sliding towards financial ruin unless Father wins the Nobel Prize. In some ways, this film reminded me of `You Can't Take It With You' (1938). Gösta Ekman is superb as the eccentric Father, Rolf Swedenhielm, and Karin Swanström couldn't be better as the devoted and faithful servant, Marta Boman. Film was recently shown in US on TCM and highlighted an early performance of 20-year-old Ingrid Bergman as Astrid - it is a small part. Although the comedy is there, it is subdued - perhaps giving us an insight into the Swedish culture. A slow, but warm, film with good moral messages. Not for everyone.
