What a dull, humourless and leaden version of Wilde this is despite the presence of Grundgens, Dorsch and Hoppe and the excellent UFA production values. Simply an opportunity to have a dig at the English class structure. One needs to have one's moral compass handy when viewing the films of Hans Steinhoff, some of which are first class, despite his being described by Billy Wilder as 'a talentless idiot'. This one however engenders no emotions at all having had the life drained out of it by Thea von Harbou's adaptation.
