We’re on the road again with a pair of eccentric new-age hobos, the kind that just can’t hack it in polite society. Gene Hackman and Al Pacino’s conflicting acting styles get a workout in Jerry Schatzberg’s tale of drifters cursed with iffy goals; Vilmos Zsigmond’s Panavision cinematography helped it earn a big prize at Cannes.

Charles Manson’s murder spree — which sent him to prison for more than 40 years before he died on Sunday — broke, overnight, into American culture five decades ago and never left.
During a two-day spree in August 1969, Manson and his followers, known as “the Manson family,” were responsible for the murders of seven people, including 26-year-old actress Sharon Tate. (According to authorities, Manson had already orchestrated the death of Gary Hinman, in July 1969, and would order his “family” to kill a ninth victim, Donald Shea, before his arrest.)

There are very few murder investigations that capture the attention of the entire country, but the ones that do usually stay with people forever. Laci Peterson became one of those cases when she went missing on Christmas Eve in 2002. While any missing persons case is devastating, people became enamored with the beautiful 27-year-old because she was eight months pregnant with her son, who was to be named Connor, when she vanished. Those closest to Laci, and the general public, couldn't understand why someone would want to hurt a woman who didn't appear to have any enemies. But as the days turned into weeks following her disappearance, the details of what happened slowly began to fill in the confusing puzzle, and it still remains one of the most chilling murder cases in recent years. Laci's husband (and Connor's dad), Scott Peterson, quickly became the police's main suspect due to his bizarre behavior,...

In the peak American film noir years from 1940 to 1960, an astonishing number of these movies took place in the scenic west coast city of San Francisco. Fandor’s new video, “Shadows In The Fog: Classic San Francisco Film Noir” points out that as many as 70 of these films were set in the city by the bay, including classics like John Huston’s version of the The Maltese Falcon, which kicked off the genre in 1941. Orson Welles followed in 1947 with The Lady From Shanghai, which featured scenes in the city’s famous aquarium and a suspenseful footrace through Chinatown.

Could David Lowery have two of the year’s finest films? After coming to Sundance Film Festival with the best feature of the fest, A Ghost Story (our review), he’s starting production on his follow-up, The Old Man and the Gun, early next month, which could give him more than enough time to sneak it out by year’s end. Ahead of the shoot, he’s also already secured distribution and has now expanded his cast. Led by Robert Redford, Casey Affleck, and Sissy Spacek, check out a new synopsis below.
Forrest Tucker (Redford) has been on the wrong side of the law since he was a teen. He grew into a career bank robber who broke out of prison 18 times, including a daring escape from San Quentin at age 70. The post-Thanksgiving weekend is one of a handful every year that offer no new wide studio release. Last year Universal took a successful shot with the off-beat Christmas-themed “Krampus.” Its $16 million opening weekend pushed Top Ten grosses ahead by a small margin from this year’s total.
The strength of two strong holdovers — Disney’s “Moana” and Warner Bros.’ “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” — almost brought the numbers to par. They also pushed the totals above three similar bleak weekends (Super Bowl, post-Labor Day and Halloween) often shunned for top films.
The only new semi-wide release was Blumhouse Productions’ “Incarnate,” directed by Brad Peyton (“San Quentin”), who took advantage of the freedoms of a low budget to make a horror film. The net returns — against a low budget, digital advertising and later earnings — make the just-over $2 million total look pretty good.

Written by Lowery, the movie is based on a 2003 New Yorker article by David Grann and tells the true story of Forrest Tucker (Redford), an outlaw with 18 successful prison breaks and a lifetime of bank robberies to his name. The film will retrace Forrest’s twilight years from his escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 to his unprecedented heists that confused authorities and enchanted the public. Affleck will star as a detective who’s captivated by the lawbreaker’s commitment to his craft.

Daniel Wozniak has been sentenced to death for the murders of his neighbor and his neighbor's friend, according to a press release from the Orange County district attorney's office. The California theater actor, 31, killed his neighbor, 26-year-old Army veteran Sam Herr, and Herr's friend Juri "Julie" Kibuishi in 2010 as part of a ploy to clean out Herr's $62,000 savings so he could pay for his upcoming wedding to his actress fiancée Rachel Buffett. On Friday, Orange County Superior Court Judge John Conley ruled against Wozniak's public defender Scott Sanders' motion for a new trial and against another motion to dismiss the death penalty,...

We Are Robin The Cradle
Now I know the answer to the question.
For years people have been asking me, what kind of laws would the Marvel or DC legislatures – federal, state, or local – have passed in light of the super-powered activities in their respective universes?
Now you know the question.
So, what’s the answer? Well, after what happened in the Robin War story that ran through several of the Batman family of books earlier this year, I deduced what the answer to that question must be. A two-thirds supermajority of Congress must have passed an amendment to the Constitution. Then a three-fourths supermajority of the fifty states ratified said amendment and the amendment became part of the Constitution, the supreme law of the land.
What did said amendment say? Again, based on what happened in “Robin War,” it must have said, “Hey, you know that whole Bill of Rights thing?...

Orange Is the New Black returns June 17. The show has rightly earned praise for its nuanced, moving portrayals of female inmates of all stripes, and serves as a reminder of how far things have come in terms of images of incarcerated women on screen. In appreciation of series creator Jenji Kohan and the cast and crew's elevated take on the subject matter, we're looking back at the bleak and often exploitative history of the strange "women's prison drama" film genre. The portrayal of women in prison can be split - as most of Hollywood can - into two periods: Pre- and Post-Code.

Adapted from Ed Bunker’s cult novel, Schrader’s thriller about three ex-cons is his best work in years – though he should probably have avoided casting himself
In 1992, Quentin Tarantino revealed his love for cult crime author Edward Bunker by casting him as Mr Blue in Reservoir Dogs; the former San Quentin prison inmate and reformed armed robber whose hardboiled genre fiction was unrivalled in its authenticity. Three years later, and benefitting from a colossal career-boost, Bunker published a new novel entitled Dog Eat Dog, a nod to Tarantino’s debut. Paul Schrader has now filmed it, shifting the scene from Los Angeles to Cleveland, and working from an adaptation by screenwriter Matthew Wilder.
It’s the right director for the right project and the result is Schrader’s best for years: a lairy, nasty, tasty crime thriller built on black-comic chaos. Dog Eat Dog isn’t perfect: the opening scene could have been cut,...

Legendary country star Merle Haggard died Wednesday on his 79th birthday, a coincidence that wouldn't seem out of place in one of Haggard's many indispensable contributions to country music. But Haggard didn't just pen hits like "Okie from Muskogee," "Sing Me Back Home" and "Mama Tried." He fundamentally altered the course of country music on a granular level, introducing a sonic blueprint that would come to be known as "the Bakersfield sound," a rough-hewn counterpoint to the sweeter sounds coming out of Nashville at the same time. Born in Bakersfield, California, to Dust Bowl migrants from Oklahoma, Haggard spent large...

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg called for an end to the disproportionate jailing of African Americans and Latinos on Tuesday after visiting San Quentin State Prison with his wife, Priscilla. “Blacks and Hispanics are significantly more likely than whites to be arrested for possession and sale of marijuana and to receive a conviction and criminal record, even though the majority of marijuana users are non-Hispanic whites,” he posted on Facebook. He added that over half the people entering prison live below the poverty line and that “our entire society pays the price for an unfair, broken system.” Also Read: Vice Screens President Obama's HBO.

Zak Williams could have easily gotten into show business if he wanted to. Robin Williams' son clearly had connections to the entertainment world, but he decided to go a completely different route. Instead of becoming an actor and comedian like his famous father, the 32-year-old San Franciscan, who holds an Mba from Columbia University, decided to focus his talents on educating prisoners. More specifically, educating prisoners about money. Williams co-teaches a weekly class to incarcerated individuals at San Quentin State Prison about finances. "I come from an entitled background where I could have not worked hard—just coasted for a chunk of my life, up to a point," Williams told Today....

Ah, summer and Marvel movies go together like popcorn and butter. I don’t know that I want to go back to the time before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, simply because it’s given me so much to look forward to during the sticky, oppressive days of scorching weather.
“Ant-Man” was one of those movies like “Guardians of the Galaxy” that, when announced, made a whole lot of fans scratch their heads. The Marvel Juggernaut has banked on the heavy hitters. As an audience, we saw beautifully condensed stories of the titans at Marvel’s disposal. To engage us, they delivered Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America in glorious, large than life full color. Now that Phase Two is completed and we’ve embarked on Phase Three, I’m sure there are people wondering “What is this? We have to do the B-roll now? What are they even going to do here?...

“Face front” all you Marvel-maniacs! The movie universe is expanding by actually getting…smaller. When we last visited the studio mega-franchise, just about ten weeks ago, metallic maniac Ultron ( a really major fail from Stark Industries) was out to destroy humanity until the Avengers (lead by the big heavy-hitters like Thor and the Hulk) pulled the plug on his plans. And story lines were in place for a new cosmic menace. But this new entry is not set way, way up there like last Summer’s surprise smash Guardians Of The Galaxy. Our new hero is more down to Earth (many times he’s a fraction of an inch from Earth). Non-comics fans may be surprised that he’s actually one of the earliest Marvel characters, almost pre-dating the age of heroes by his introduction in the Sf suspense story titled “The Man in the Ant Hill” from the anthology...

Marvel’s "Ant-Man" is a superhero film for the underdog. The film follows ex-con man Scott Lang, who finds himself down on his luck after being released from San Quentin prison. Comedian Paul Rudd plays Scott flawlessly, who after being fired from Baskin-Robbins gets himself roped into one last big score in an effort to get back into his young daughter’s life. Instead of finding money or jewels, Scott and his rag tag group of friends; Luis (Michael Peña), Dave (Ti) and Kurt (David Dastmalchian) come across a peculiar looking leather suit. Things quickly spiral out of control when the gang inadvertently finds themselves involved in a power struggle and corporate...

Final Ant-Man Trailer Looks To The Avengers For Help; Viral Video And Cameo Strengthen Ties With McU
With little under a fortnight until its global release, the intelligent promotional pizazz for Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man is beginning to reach its crescendo, and today we bring you the final full-length trailer for the superhero flick, a viral video with a nice nod to the original Iron Man and, lastly, a TV spot that may be considered spoiler sensitive. Marketing campaigns don’t come any bigger.
First up, the ultimate sizzle reel showcases Paul Rudd in action as the minuscule hero, and even includes a question that has been subconsciously asked by audiences during every Marvel standalone film: where oh where are the Avengers? There’s also more screen time dedicated to the backstory of Rudd’s protagonist Scott Lang, including why he winded up in prison in the first place. But as a master thief, Lang is the perfect candidate for Hank Pym’s mission, who must shelter...
