The Consequences
boblipton21 October 2021
Operation Michael, the assault on the English fortress on the Western Front known as the the Labyrinth is underway. When all the senior field officers are down, it's up to Major Mathias Wieman, who wrote the plan, to carry out the assault on one of the surrounding towns that guard the Labyrinth. The English, however, counter-attack, and the German guns are too worn out to target the area without striking the German positions.

Operation Michael was one of the four German operations that made up the Spring Offensive in 1918, resulting in the First Battle of the Somme, 1918. It was an effort to separate the British army from the French and drive them into the sea. Its eventual failure meant the effective end of the Western Front; American forces entered the War, while the Germans had no reserves.

Karl Ritter's movie is derived from the Hans Fritz von Zwehl stage play, and opens it nicely. Judging by what I saw on screen, the play is set purely at the command center of the operation, with information coming in from the field. The movie shows the audience the field, with its attendant destruction and death, shifting the focus from those who give the orders and regret it to those who suffer the consequences.

entertaining Nazi propaganda war classic

Warning: Spoilers
This film made before Hitler declared war against the world. The idea was to produce this world war 1 drama to prepare Germany for war. In these films the German are the victim. The German soldiers and officers might get in injured but never killed. In this case the enemy is France . The German soldiers just invaded France. The higher ups, played by Heinrich George as the commanding General,Mathias Wieman , as the Major General and Paul Otto as Otl Hengenau, want to invade with full forces a french town Bravenoir. Elsa Wagnger , stalwart character actress of Germany, plays a small part of a countess , who's house has been invaded by German soldiers taking over her house. Her portrayal of the French language is good without any German accent.Well the Hun just picked up a British soldier and now Otto Graff is speaking broken English, questioning the Britsh soldier. The British accent is authentic almost until you hear the actors German accent.Heinz is observing the Questioning and the member of the staff is translating the to him what the British officer is saying. The problem is that the poor Huns is surrounded by heavy British forces to be able to invade Bravenoir. They feel they can use Artillery but the Brits have hand grenade which can stop them, This problem stifles the soldiers as they have to wait for an order.Willy Birgel makes a Guest appearance as Major count Schellenberg to discuss the problem with the staff . this movie looks more like a play . Less action and more talk.As the soldiers out side the staff building waiting for orders, Heinrich shows up out side on the balcony explaining to the soldiers the problem. After the speech you have some solders, like Beppo Brem who complains to Joseph Dahmen how the staff officers have better food and drink before than the soldiers do.This irritates Dahmen so he leaves. Paul Otto discusses a little about the problem to Mathias. One of the soldiers officers gets injured so Mathias takes over in ordered to help the soldiers move forward to take over Bravenior. Carl John makes a small Appearance as one of the soldiers. Malte Yeager is suppose to be in it too but i don't see him in this film. Well you hear the battle going on and the shooting but no one gets killed and they barely show the enemy. A new Idea come up to Defeat the evil British-ahhhhhhh, Use a tank and the grenades wont stop the invasion.Well at first they don't succeed totally and Mathias sends a message using carrier pigeon. The tank follow the bird to make sure it doesn't get killed. The 69th staff get's the message that they have failed, Mathias and the soldiers to go all the way through. Heinrich and the rest of the staff are very disappointed, as they leave the building. Then some one goes out of the building with a new message from some one else that they did go all the way through and finally invaded Bravenoir. On a sad note Actor Paul Otto, at this time was concealing the fact he was Jewish. When Goebbels found out in 1943 ,instead of ending up being deported Otto and his wife committed suicide with gasoline.
