MGM had planned for Greer Garson to make her film debut in the film, but shortly before shooting began, Garson injured her back and the role was recast with Luise Rainer.
This was Luise Rainer's last film for M-G-M, the studio for which she had worked under contract for three years since her arrival in the United States four years previously.
This film was a failure at the box office, resulting in a loss to MGM of $206,000 (nearly $4M in 2021) according to studio records.
