Quotes

  • Duncan Macrae : You're a bad mannered, bad tempered, outrageous female, but I have discovered that I cannot live without you.

  • Duncan Macrae : I do not understand why your brother's marrying that girl? She's very ugly and she's very stupid.

George-Anne Carleton : Oh, he loves her, Duncan. Love is strange!

  • George-Anne Carleton : Why, hello, Duncan. Where did you come from?

Duncan Macrae : Don't try to be off-hand with me, George-Anne. I'm very, very angry. I had to take a flying-machine to catch you and I cannot afford to have flying-machines chase you about.

George-Anne Carleton : Well, nobody asked you to chase me about.

Duncan Macrae : You're a daft and undependable female!

  • Duncan Macrae : Richard says you're eatin' your heart out for me.

George-Anne Carleton : Richard told you that!

    Duncan Macrae : He did.

George-Anne Carleton : Then, got him drunk and made him say it.

Duncan Macrae : If you were a man I'd knock you down for that!

  • Duncan Macrae : signed note: Yours with very little respect,

  • Duncan Macrae : [Duncan is bringing a very inebriated Richard back to the mansion]  I give you my word of honour, George-Anne, I haven't the slightest idea.

George-Anne Carleton : You did it on purpose!

Duncan Macrae : I did not! How could I know that one bottle of champagne and a few small brandies could make any grown man drunk?

George-Anne Carleton : Why did you give him anything at all?

Duncan Macrae : I tell you, I just happened to meet him, and we - we celebrated.

George-Anne Carleton : "Celebrated"? With him? You said you wouldn't be seen dead with him. You must be drunk, too!

Duncan Macrae : I'm not. I can't be. None of us Macraes is capable of being drunk. We've tried!

  • George-Anne Carleton : Your suspicions about us were right, Duncan. We didn't love the old lady. And we didn't stay with her because she was lonely. We were after her money, right from the start. And that night you came to the house, I was afraid you'd spoil everything. I was afraid to even have you about!

Duncan Macrae : But you're not afraid now?

George-Anne Carleton : No! Because now she's come through. Now we're going to get her money. Oh, we're all rotters, Duncan. We always have been and we always will be. We're parasites. We - we cheat at cards, and we lie about ourselves. The only time we behave like decent people is when it pays.

Duncan Macrae : Such a long speech, darling, and I don't believe a word of it. I don't care what you thought you were up to. I don't care what you think you are. I want to marry you.

George-Anne Carleton : Oh, no, Duncan. I'm not turning noble, but - but I won't mess up your life. Once I wouldn't marry you because you weren't rich enough for me. And now I won't marry you because I'm not good enough for you.
