Another excellent German musical at a bad time
cynthiahost16 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This is was made when the Nazis declared war against the world. It was one of those escapist comedy musical that had hardly any propaganda in it.This film has two plots in it.Peter Bagrat, played by Johannes Reimann, is a composer ,who attempts to write symphonies unsuccessfully, who work at a night club owned by Hilda Hildabrand, she also owned a night club in Grosse Frieheit number 7.His frustration causes neglect against his wife,Frau, Nora ,played by Leny Marenbach, which causes her to neglect her own looks. In this film the actress was a little round, compare to her thinner look in some other movies, like in Friedmann Bach ,Die Grosse Nummer,Ein Zug Fahrt Ab.She might of been required to gain a few pound slightly for the first part of this film.At first she has the plain Jane look. When Nora sees entertainer Mausi, played by Germany's great Gretha Wieser, giving peter an affectionate kiss,Nora mistakes it as romantic and goes home to her Uncle ,who is a lawyer or a judge, Windhorst, played by German character actor Ralph Arthur Roberts. She still loves Pete so her uncle helps her to get peter back, through jealousy and teasing.Leny uses various head dress and make up and costume techniques for her character to get Peter Jealous.First a glamorous look, aided by her best friend Krista, played by Hilda Wiessner, when Nora appears at the night club ,Peter works in , with hired men ,one of them Erich Fiedler, to arouse jealousy from Pete.Another time She's dressing up slutty as a party girl, when she visiting Peter only to tell him that she had their son,how neglected this character was when he never knew she was expecting. Then when she dress to look like a Madonna ,when she's singing a lullaby to her baby. When Gretha take one of Peter's Symphonies and Jazzes it up for her piano, he realizes that he's better off writing for Jazz and swing number.Gretha has a number in this film ,which was part of the songs of u.f.a films CD,but , the title of the movie and title of the song was not printed on the back cover.Hilda Hildabrand does not sing in this film.Rudolph Platte shows up again as a butler. Both peter and Nora finally get back together when Peter thinks his baby has been kidnapped.A nice entertaining musical. 12/16/13
