Drunk every day is also a regular life

Warning: Spoilers
Hans Albers was definitely a superb actor in his own right, if it was just for convincingly playing himself or the image he wanted to convey for himself. In this adventure flick, he is a always thirsty (for hard liquor that is) engineer building a water pipeline somewhere in Canada. As events have it, he is bound to flee after an explosion leaves him with a trumped-up murder charge. He manages to redeem himself, with the final irony to give his last breath for water, as his life has been devoted to Whiskey. Next to the action, there are plenty of punch lines around, like "I am the Maharadscha of Whiskey Pure" and alike. And a great musical score with the gripping "Good Bye, Johnny" being the best of it. Somebody told, and it is not unlikely from the melody, that the tunes were used to create the Nation Anthem of the long deceased Eastern Germany (Rising from the ruins...). Well, if you can get it, watch it and enjoy it.

COMPELLING VIEWING

Great story-telling combined with Hans Albers' tour de force and Selpin's immaculate directing make this film compelling viewing,

The total irony of the existence of Albers' character (a real Einzelgänger) is very cleverly stressed by the fact that his whole life he has been working on something that only at the last minute he makes use of (but too late), which makes a second, third etc. viewing the more compelling.

Selpin's directing skills and personal touch are evident throughout the picture, but there are two sequences worth special mention. First there is the about 35 minutes long Sylvester celebration that could have been a short in itself; the combination of the ongoing music and the controlled pace of the image lets the atmosphere of the town and the tension brilliantly come across. Second sequence (already hinted at above) must also be the highlight of the film: the very moving final scene.

There is one minor dissonant: Selpin probably did not feel at ease with the "love's interest" within the story and this aspect is not very well done.

Warning: Spoilers
Hans Albers adds depth to his character ,Oliver Monstuart engineer. He adds his favorite past time,Heavy drinking,to his character.Whether he actually was drinking in front of the camera, that a question mark. He also has a bad heart. It suppose to take place in Canitoga Canada in 1905 but there is some inaccuracies.By this time there were cars, not much, but still and less hose buggies. The town looks like the 1870's with wagons, no cars. The music. At that time jazz was just developing , you had rag time. Lillie's Saloon and restaurant,Played by Charlotte Susa,Maria Anderpast rival in The big adventures, 1938.The music is modern Jazz , 1938 style, which was hypocritically illegal in Germany. The song," good buy Johnny , was more modern jazz of the time than rag time. But in spite of the inaccuracies it was pretty good. Hans has to hide cause he's accuse of a crime, murder. Some one keeps destroying the water project, that he was involved in.The law is offering 500 dollars for his capture, but they never do.In disguise he portrays a different person. He ends up working for Canitoga's Au qua duct project.I didn't see clearly who was messing up the project,I though it was Joseph Sieber,as Ingram. But another explosion happen. They all know what he is and they all try,the men ,to capture him for that reward. But the alarm goes off there is another threat of explosion and Peter Voss,as the boss Gilbert tries to stop Hans from going under and stopping the explosion .The doctor already tells him he has a weak heart. He manages to get the dynamite out,but end up dying for it As the Canada flag falls out of the pole covering up his dead body. 03/29/12
